INTRODUCTION
Homelessness is a critical issue that requires everyone's attention. Hundreds of thousands of
homeless people live on the streets as their shelter. Historically, homelessness has always been a
problem in society. Homeless people were known as "the wondering poor", "sturdy beggars", and as
"vagrants," but it was not until the late 18th century that homelessness because noticeable to society.

mouth, depending on generosity of strangers or efficiency of a government agency for your survival,
for your children's survival."
However, one definition worth stating comes to mind. "Homelessness is a condition of detachment
from society characterized by the absence or attenuation of the affiliate bonds that link settled
person to a network of interconnected social structures". The condition of detachment can be
explained as an insecure attachment experience in which a person will develop a working model
for constructing a negative world of himself and the world around him or her. The other important
word worth defining is the establishing of social bonds which can be explained in terms of one's
social networks. (McCarthy, Hagan, & Martin, 2002)
Two other perspectives can also help us underline the issue of homelessness. On the one part you
have the industrialized world and on the other you have the developing world. Homelessness in the
industrial world is explained in terms of a lack of affordable housing, family disintegration, and drug
and alcohol abuse, deinstitutionalization

Reflection About Homeless
In today's world, homelessness seems to be everywhere we go. Sometimes, homeless people even
confront us to ask for money or due to their mental state. I believe that even though this can be scary
or uncomfortable, we should still treat them with respect and kindness. As someone who is very
curious about everything and everyone there is one thing that sticks out the most. That is
homelessness. When I see a homeless person a million questions rush through my head. I think why
might they be homeless, do they have a family, but there is one main question that I think. The big
question that I ask myself is how do people treat them if they are approached for some reason. I
have had a personal experience with having a homeless person approach my family and me.
My family took a trip to Asheville, North Carolina. While walking around downtown, I noticed
many people who appeared homeless. Some were sleeping, some were begging, and one even started
yelling angrily at my family, although he wasn't making much sense. He followed us for about a
hundred feet, yelling the whole time. My mom and sister ignored him, but my dad got in his face
and yelled at him to stop. After what seemed like several minutes, but was probably only 30
seconds or so, one of the shopkeepers ran up to my dad and the homeless man and calmed the
situation down. The shopkeeper explained to us that the homeless man is well–known in the area
and that he is harmless. We were also informed that the homeless man is

Mental Illness Homelessness and Evidence Based Practice Ashley Beverly Stephen F. Austin State
University Abstract The Coalition of Evidence–Based Practice has conducted research to test the
effectiveness implemented interventions in various settings. Homelessness has been observed as a
result of mentally ill clients being discharged from institutional settings (e.g. hospitals, prisons, and
more). Although studies continue to change it has been found that Americans homeless rate in 2008
for individuals was around 740,000 (Fazel, Kohsla, Doll, and Geddes, 2008). This paper will
explore the outcomes of this evidence based research and whether the intervention implemented
proved to be effective or ineffective. Mental Illness...show more content...

magine feeling lost and misplaced in this huge world around you. Each night you end up on a
bench or in a dark alley; a place you call your bed. You wake up each morning deciding which
public place you'll go in to clean up. When you get hungry, you'll have to beg people for cash. For
the rest of the day, you sit in the city hoping people will notice you and help out. Knowing that you
are not judged by who you are but what you are, you realize that most people in society don 't
understand homelessness, and wonder if the circumstances in homelessness will ever change. Being
homeless is a shock to many. It depicts someone just like us that lack the minimum necessities that
we take for granted.

American people want to be greater, richer, and more powerful than everyone else. When one
sees a homeless person sitting on the street, he may ask you for money to buy food. As ignorant
as most Americans are today, we question will they really spend that money on food, but some of
us are generous enough to give a donation anyway. Others would tell them to get a job. As I walk
down Grace Street to get to class some days, I get asked by multiple homeless people if I could
"help them out." In Richmond, VA, Phil Riggan, did an interview with several of homeless
people. He found out that they are just like the rest of us. Homeless people aren't usually viewed
as people; they're commonly just known as "homeless". They are viewed as "worthless, nuisances,
waste of space, crazy, drug addicts, drunkards, criminals, liars, bums, and burdens of society"
(Riggan 6). Phil's study was to "prevent, reduce and end homelessness by facilitating creative
solutions through the collaboration, coordination and cooperation of regional resources and
services" (Riggan 8). Homeless people are still human. As we all need shelter, food, and emotional
support, so do they. The Homeless Homes Project was started by Gregory Kloehn, an artist, that
turned trash into mobile homes. The Homeless Homes Project was to diminish money's use in
building homes for the homeless population. The

When we were first introduced to this assignment, I was both excited and nervous. I was excited
because it gave me the opportunity to step of my comfort zone. I was also excited to be able to
get out into the community and practice some of the social work skills that we have learned in
class. I was nervous because I knew it would be hard to hear the struggles of a single–parent
experiencing homelessness. As someone who was raised by a single–parent, I also know how easy it
can be to fall into homelessness. Overall, I think I was more excited about doing this assignment
because I truly did want to hear the stories that single–parents experiencing homelessness wanted to
tell.

My thoughts have stayed the same about homelessness; however, I certainly have started to
acknowledge that homelessness is a very real thing. I also try my hardest to recognize that these
individuals are people; therefore, I now make it a point to at least make eye–contact with them on
the street.
Social Justice
As I stated before, far too often our society ignores that homelessness is a struggle for many
people. Additionally, our society often thinks these people choose to be homeless. Terra talked
about an incident at a gas station, and how one of the employees at the gas station said all the
people at across the street are drunks and addicts. She talked about how upset she gets when people
have these misconceptions about people that are struggling with homelessness. Hearing her talk
about this broke my heart because our society should not shame people for being homeless; instead,
we should be looking at solutions to end homelessness. It is a human right to have basic human
needs, yet our society continually provokes their unjust agenda.
Our society also tends to ignore domestic violence, which is something that my mother and Terra
both faced. Terra could not get any help with service providers because her children and her were
not in immediate danger; although, Terra certainly knew they were in danger. Social justice is helping

Homelessness : The Problem Of Homelessness
Homelessness
There are many parts to the subject of homelessness, of course people talk about the solutions to it
like The Ten Year Plan, then there is the history of it starting from the 1640's. Also there is
discussions about Homeless Shelters and more recently Anti–homeless Legislation. Then there are
always the staggering statistics. The homeless is a very one minded topic for most. Most people
think that the homeless should be helped, cared for, and educated for success. This is true (at least it
is politically correct). Although Homelessness started in the 1640's and has continued to be a
problem today, now we have started to criminalize homelessness.
There have been Anti–homelessness legislations all over Los Angeles and other areas. These
legislations have made it so that... "For thousands of homeless people across the country living in
areas with "anti–homeless" laws, getting shut–eye could also mean getting handcuffed." (Couch).
There was an appeal to the court on December 6, 2005 between Jones and Los Angeles, "The facts
underlying this appeal are largely undisputed. Edward Jones, Patricia Vinson, George Vinson,
Thomas Cash, Stanley Barger, and Robert Lee Purrie ("Appellants") are homeless individuals
who live on the streets of Los Angeles 's Skid Row district. Appellees are the City of Los Angeles,
Los Angeles Police Department ("L.A.P.D.") Chief William Bratton, and Captain Charles Beck
("Appellees" or "the City")." (Jones v. City of Los Angeles). As people

Essay on Homelessness and Children
Around the world millions of children are found homeless, sleeping in the streets, under bridges,
or on deserted properties. Their days are spent hustling by prostitution or petty crimes. They prey
on each other as well as people passing by that they manage to steal from. Yet still this is home to
these children, where they are deprived of the most basic human needs, housing, food, and
clothing. Since they have no family or relatives and no hope for the future, they have been tagged
"Nobody's Children" or "Throw away Kids", living each day as if it were the last, causing them to
become outlaws, which as a result is a threat to the security of the community we live in.
There are various reasons that children are found homeless, ranging...show more content...
However some parents are irresponsible in caring for their children. Some parents beat them,
sexually abuse them, or throw them out of the family into the streets to fend for themselves,
resulting in the child feeling that he or she is better off by his or her self, even living on the streets.
Statistics show that sixty percent of the homeless children between eight and seventeen years of age
use hallucinating substances, forty percent use alcoholic beverages, sixteen percent are drug addicts,
and ninety two percent use tobacco products. In an effort to belong and be loved many of these
homeless children find themselves becoming family members to gangs promoting further negativity
in their lives. Since they don't have any marketable skills, they often survive by begging, stealing,
and selling their bodies for money. It is not easy to help homeless children because the majority of
them are afraid, and they refuse to submit information to authorities.
Some homeless children have managed to escape from the homeless condition because of help from
kind people and their own willingness to learn and work to overcome the anxieties and insecurities
that homelessness offered them. There have been efforts on the part of organizations to solve the
problem by means of charities, foster homes, orphanage, and reform. But in spite of these efforts and
funds expended by the government the problem continues to rise because solving today's housing

Homeless Youth Essay
Homeless Youth
Homelessness is defined as having no fixed place to sleep at night. This includes people staying
in motels until their money runs out, those staying with friends, those staying in shelters, and
those sleeping inside or out whatever space they can find to protect themselves. The number of
homeless people has been growing and it has become a serious problem in our society. Every
night in Canada there are thousands of people living on the streets. This type of behaviour is
considered deviant because it does not reflect the norms and values of our society. In many cases
the homeless people in our country are treated as total outcasts. Many of these people have severe
mental disorders. Some are victims of an economy that has...show more content...
The primary causes of homelessness can be there are a lack of affordable housing and the limited
scale of housing assistance programs. Other causes can be insufficient income when people are
frequently unable to pay for housing, food, childcare, health care and education. This means that
difficult choices must be made when limited resources cover only some of these necessities
because of financial reasons. Some homeless people end up on the streets because they may be
physical, psychological, sexual abuse, neglect or abandonment. A study done in 1992 found that 75
percent of street youth were victims of abuse and others were youths that left home when neither
parent wanted custody of them after a divorce and some youth leave to escape parental restrictions
that they consider to be too cruel. In 2000, an American study estimated that 20 percent of homeless
youth had been in foster care before they moved to the streets and over 50 000 children run away
from home.
Being homeless presents many challenges for youth that they normally live day to day, unable to
develop plans for forming a productive life structure. Since many homeless youth don't have money
so they start begging or selling drugs or start prostituting to earn money to cover their basic needs.
The basic problem of homelessness is the human need for personal shelter,

There are many types of crowds. Living in the city since you were 15 years old has taught me

The growing number of homeless Americans in the United States is concerning and depressing. The
issue is people are homeless and don't have anywhere to go. The plan to advocate for finding a

volunteers could work in the local soup kitchen or Salvation Army. These would only be helping

Causes and Effects of Homelessness Essay
Homelessness is a problem virtually every society suffers from. There are many things that cause
people to become homeless, such as unemployment, relationship problems, and being evicted
from ones domicile either by a landlord, friend or even a family member. However, with every
cause there must be an effect. Some of the effects of one becoming homeless, besides the obvious
change of lifestyle, are various health problems which often times may lead to death. Many people
find themselves in a predicament when they are living with a partner and the two decide to go their

There are many effects that a homeless person may suffer from. Other than the obvious change in
the person's life style, such as the type and quality of clothing they wear or their mode of
transportation, homeless people are subject to various health effects as well. In recent studies it
has been found that one out of every three homeless people suffers from some sort of mental
illness. The mental illness may have been the reason the person became homeless or they may
have acquired the illness from living on the streets. When a person loses everything they have
worked for it may affect them mentally. Another common effect that homeless people suffer from
is Nutritional deficiency, better know as malnutrition. A homeless person's diet is considerably
different than that of someone who is not homeless. Since they cannot afford to eat out or make a
home cooked meal, they often have to dig in trash cans to find left over food from restaurants or
other people. A lot of the food they eat is spoiled or rotten and is not healthy for them, but rotten
food is better than no food. In addition homeless people are also subject to abuse, both physically
and sexually. It is estimated that homeless females are twenty times more likely to be sexually
assaulted than a female who is not homeless, and many of these crimes will go unreported as well.
Most homeless people do not have family members or someone who will check up on them. So they

Homelessness and Health
Introduction
Homelessness has become an evolving epidemic of our time, and the health implications associated
with being homeless makes it that much worse. Homeless people are at major risk for premature
death and a wide range of health problems such as HIV, skin blemishes, and much more. It is very
difficult for homeless people to fix their health issues due to the difficulty of accessing health care
possibly because of missing health cards, or simply because of the stigma placed on them when
they enter a public facility. Whatever the problem may be that is forcing more people to become
homeless, it must be solved, and quickly before our world turns into a travesty.

For instance, allow them to stay an extra month in the institution after their illness is treated, to let
them go out and find a job, and hopefully bring in some money that they can build off of when they
are released. How do they expect these individuals who are being treated to get on the right track
when they have no money? Sooner than later they will be right back in that same place, or possibly
the hospital because their bodies cannot function without food and shelter. One last interesting point
made my Gupta is the question she ponders about whether these mental patients and the disorders
associated with each, are consequences or are they causes of homelessness? Despite the fact that they
can be either or, I arguably believe that they cause homelessness more than they are a consequence of
homelessness. Sure homelessness is a tough psychological battle as much as it is a physical and
emotional one, but certain mental disabilities are stigmatized, and some even prevent you from
getting a job and without employment, homelessness is often the product.

Have you ever wonder how does it feel to sleep on the street? Have you ever tried to survive with
one meal for an entire week? Homelessness has been an issue for a long time already. Homeless
peoples in today society are mistreated, people does not respect them, and even the government had
sometimes abandoned them. During elections campaign, the candidates talk a lot about helping
homeless, but once they are chosen, the promise is already forgotten. Today's government does not
provide enough help to these people. They don't care much about them. They mistreat and abuse

They are human like us and they should have the same right as we do. If government mistreat
homeless, they are also mistreating us. We usually judge others without knowing about their
background story. There are some factors that can convert someone wealthy to homeless. For
example: Losing a job, when this is the only thing that can help to pay and provide for the basic
needs needed; Mental illness, some people thinks that they can help everybody, but they always
ends up forgetting about themselves, even sometimes losing everything, but still they will
always put their life at risk for others; Addiction, it can be addiction to betting or drinking, this
type of person most often will not control their income properly, reaching a point that they will
waste all that income and end up having a big debt and broke. A place to rest, some food to eat
and drink, friends to talk with. These are the basic needs that they usually don't get to have.
Homeless people don't have a home to return to, they are alone. They are out in the street seeking
for a second chance to start again. They are willing to change and correct the mistakes committed.
They have to be living in the street with hunger every single day. They have to be living in the
street with the cold winter and the hot summer. They have to be living in the street with a terrible
living condition which can lead to diseases. Every year an average of 25 homeless die in the street

Poverty and Homelessness Essay examples
Poverty and Homelessness Usually when a person thinks of the poor and the homeless, they think
about those that are living and sleeping on park benches or under bridges. They think of those who
are dirty, with ragged clothing, worn out shoes, and those begging or panhandling for food. The truth
of the matter is that poverty and homelessness can affect people of any age, race or gender. More
Americans are at the risk of poverty and homelessness today. There are many circumstances that can
cause a person to live in poverty and become homeless. The lack of affordable housing, low paying
jobs or lack of employment, and insufficient federal aid all contribute to poverty and homelessness.

Still, some Americans have become homeless due to the loss or lack of employment. With the
recent economic recession, many companies have moved to other parts of the country or have
outsourced, leaving many without jobs. Displaced workers face difficulty finding new
employment. Others lack the minimum job skills to attain employment. The lack of education
increases the likelihood of a low income. It is difficult for those with little education to find work
that provides a decent wage. They have less of a chance of making a desirable income. Education
and basic skills are needed in acquiring jobs. Those with more education generally earn more than
those that are less educated. The lack of education and training, combined with low wages, keep
many families from moving up. Furthermore, the declining availability of public assistance has
also increased the number of families that are in poverty or homeless. Fewer families are receiving
the help they need. There were once many federal and state assistance programs that were available
for those in need, but because of budget cuts, most of the funding for these programs have been cut
or eliminated. As a result of loss of benefits many continue to struggle. In Anna Quindlen's, "Our

Homeless parents are typically very young, between twenty–five to thirty years old (Levinson
150).Homeless families have little or no money, so they have very few resources to keep them
healthy. Some tend to sell their bodies or drugs to get money. When they do have resources, they get
robbed at night and lose everything they had. No matter if they have resources or not they are still in
bad condition.
Some of the effects of being homeless may be a physical condition or health issues. Since they are
homeless they sometimes have to share their resources with their family or other individuals living
around them. Many people have addictions which lead to health issues, such as drinking alcohol,
sniffing glue, injecting heroin, and gambling. Sometimes they had to share dirty needles. Eleven
percent of them get drunk at least three times a week (Levinson 152).
Poor nutrition can contribute to their health issues. They tend to go hungry twice as often as housed
children because they don't have the resources to purchase food("Impact of Homelessness on
Children" 2). They sometimes have to go to hotels and ask for the leftover food there. Poor nutrition
increases their rate of stunted growth and anemia.
They are also at a very high risk of infectious diseases. They suffer five times the rate of diarrheal

The existence of homeless people in our society is still evident today. Everywhere you look around
our cities, parks and streets it is likely that you will witness a homeless person struggling to survive.
This is most certainly a social justice issue, every Australian deserves a secure and comfortable place
to dwell, not left on the streets to perish.
In society the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer. People today are far to driven by work and
money to see the problem of homelessness surrounding them.
Those very reasons explain why I chose this topic to create an advertising campaign. On the 23rd of

There are many aged Australians living in poverty. Homelessness is also a problem in Australia's
aged community. Statistics prove that over twenty thousand elderly Australians are at risk of
becoming homeless, or already are homeless. War Veterans are also included in this number, and that
equates to approximately two thousand, five hundred homeless War Veterans.
Agencies such as the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP) are set up to help get
homeless people off the streets. Derived from the 1996 census, there was an estimated one hundred
and five thousand homeless people across Australia. Twelve percent or twelve thousand nine hundred
homeless Australians use the SAAP. It is estimated that one hundred and sixteen thousand requests
for SAAP could not be met by the organization alone. Indigenous people in the SAAP program

population.
The target audience for my campaign is Australian adults living the high life. I am trying to appeal to
these people, with the hope that they may begin to donate to organizations such as SAAP. It is a
campaign to open the eyes of Australians to the reality of homelessness in our societies and
communities. The full severity is not known to the Australian population.
As you can see, more needs to be done about the prevalence of homelessness in our society. I

Currently, the count of homeless students that are attending schools in the United States are over 1.3
million. The number, according to reports, has doubled since ten years ago.
And if this is not stopped, the number is expected to grow. What is needed is that school
administrators are being pushed to find out the particular individuals who are actual homeless
students. Homeless students, according to ABC News, are considered but are not limited to those
who are living in other people's homes. Some kids and their families are staying in places such as
motels, cars and even campgrounds. They still attend school even if they do not have a permanent

when it comes to transfer processes.
Now, school administrators are being urged to keep them in school even if they lack the papers.

There is an ever–growing number of homeless persons within our society. While it has become a
popular topic of discussion as to why people become homeless little discussion has occurred about
the homeless reintegrating back into society. Many steps must be taken in order for a homeless
person to be able to create and maintain a steady life. There must be an acknowledgment of the
barriers that led to homelessness. These barriers may be a numerous amount of things such as
substance abuse, personal trauma, unhealthy relationships, health problems, or unemployment. No
matter the barrier, goals need to be set and must be realistic. If the goals seem impossible to reach
they will be. Finally, there must be a commitment to following through with the set goals and a
realization that this is an ongoing process that will not change overnight.
There is a misinformed stigma of homelessness, which is that all homeless persons are in their
situation because of substance abuse – or this is at least, in part, why they are unable to overcome
homelessness, and that all homeless persons are unemployed. While mental illness and chronic
substance abuse are the most common disabilities within homeless communities (Schutt, 2009) they
are not the only factors as to why an individual may become homeless. As mentioned above, personal
traumas, health problems, unhealthy relationships and lack of employment can lead to
homelessness. An alarming amount of veterans are now homeless due to coming home

Problem Solution Homelessness Essay
Homelessness the Problems of America Homelessness has always been a problem in major cities
across the United States and even the world. This problem also affects out local community and
even all of us individually. (Daily) A majority of the American people lives paycheck to paycheck,
and according to statistics, we are only one or two paychecks away from becoming homeless.
While there are many reasons a person or family can become homeless, a majority of those
problems come from a lack of income. The job market of today is quickly dwindling and shows no
signs of improvement. This market mixed with new government policies is becoming an issue for
struggling American's on the poverty line. Homelessness is becoming a vast problem...show more

Some veterans suffer from a mental illness known as PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) when
they do not seek medical help they have a higher risk of becoming homeless then those that seek
medical advice. This disorder was caused by something that the military veteran experienced while in
active duty during war.
While the idea's that have come forth to try to solve the problem of homelessness, many people
have come up with great solutions that are currently helping these individuals. The programs that
are in place provide shelters for people who have been kicked to the streets and have no place to
stay. These shelters provide food, clothing, water, and best of all a place to sleep. However, these
shelters require the individuals staying there to seek a job during the day. The biggest problems
these shelters have come from the rules that apply to those staying. The current rules allow
homeless people to take advantage of the program by allowing them to stay there for up to 6
months, and then they must move to another shelter or live on the streets. The problem presented
with this rule is in most cities they have more than one shelter, which allows people to abuse the
system and live under the care of taxpayers indefinitely. However, most people understand that there
could potentially be more than one reason why a person would need to return to a homeless shelter
within 6 months to a year, but not spend almost their entire life using

Homelessness Thesis HES Republic of the Philippines Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa COLLEGE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE NBP Reservation Poblacion, Muntinlupa City INTRODUCTION Homelessness is a critical issue that requires everyone's attention. Hundreds of thousands of homeless people live on the streets as their shelter. Historically, homelessness has always been a problem in society. Homeless people were known as "the wondering poor", "sturdy beggars", and as "vagrants," but it was not until the late 18th century that homelessness because noticeable to society. However, one definition worth stating comes to mind. "Homelessness is a condition of detachment from society characterized by the absence or attenuation of the affiliate bonds that link settled person to a network of interconnected social structures". The condition of detachment can be explained as an insecure attachment experience in which a person will develop a working model for constructing a negative world of himself and the world around him or her. The other important word worth defining is the establishing of social bonds which can be explained in terms of one's social networks. (McCarthy, Hagan, & Martin, 2002) Two other perspectives can also help us underline the issue of homelessness. On the one part you have the industrialized world and on the other you have the developing world. Homelessness in the industrial world is explained in terms of a lack of affordable housing, family disintegration, and drug and alcohol abuse, deinstitutionalization Get more content on HelpWriting.net
 • 2. Reflection About Homeless In today's world, homelessness seems to be everywhere we go. Sometimes, homeless people even confront us to ask for money or due to their mental state. I believe that even though this can be scary or uncomfortable, we should still treat them with respect and kindness. As someone who is very curious about everything and everyone there is one thing that sticks out the most. That is homelessness. When I see a homeless person a million questions rush through my head. I think why might they be homeless, do they have a family, but there is one main question that I think. The big question that I ask myself is how do people treat them if they are approached for some reason. I have had a personal experience with having a homeless person approach my family and me. My family took a trip to Asheville, North Carolina. While walking around downtown, I noticed many people who appeared homeless. Some were sleeping, some were begging, and one even started yelling angrily at my family, although he wasn't making much sense. He followed us for about a hundred feet, yelling the whole time. My mom and sister ignored him, but my dad got in his face and yelled at him to stop. After what seemed like several minutes, but was probably only 30 seconds or so, one of the shopkeepers ran up to my dad and the homeless man and calmed the situation down. The shopkeeper explained to us that the homeless man is well–known in the area and that he is harmless. We were also informed that the homeless man is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
 • 3. Homelessness And Homelessness Mental Illness Homelessness and Evidence Based Practice Ashley Beverly Stephen F. Austin State University Abstract The Coalition of Evidence–Based Practice has conducted research to test the effectiveness implemented interventions in various settings. Homelessness has been observed as a result of mentally ill clients being discharged from institutional settings (e.g. hospitals, prisons, and more). Although studies continue to change it has been found that Americans homeless rate in 2008 for individuals was around 740,000 (Fazel, Kohsla, Doll, and Geddes, 2008). This paper will explore the outcomes of this evidence based research and whether the intervention implemented proved to be effective or ineffective. Mental Illness...show more content... • 4. Persuasive Essay About Homelessness magine feeling lost and misplaced in this huge world around you. Each night you end up on a bench or in a dark alley; a place you call your bed. You wake up each morning deciding which public place you'll go in to clean up. When you get hungry, you'll have to beg people for cash. For the rest of the day, you sit in the city hoping people will notice you and help out. Knowing that you are not judged by who you are but what you are, you realize that most people in society don 't understand homelessness, and wonder if the circumstances in homelessness will ever change. Being homeless is a shock to many. It depicts someone just like us that lack the minimum necessities that we take for granted. According to statistics of a particular day in...show more content... American people want to be greater, richer, and more powerful than everyone else. When one sees a homeless person sitting on the street, he may ask you for money to buy food. As ignorant as most Americans are today, we question will they really spend that money on food, but some of us are generous enough to give a donation anyway. Others would tell them to get a job. As I walk down Grace Street to get to class some days, I get asked by multiple homeless people if I could "help them out." In Richmond, VA, Phil Riggan, did an interview with several of homeless people. He found out that they are just like the rest of us. Homeless people aren't usually viewed as people; they're commonly just known as "homeless". They are viewed as "worthless, nuisances, waste of space, crazy, drug addicts, drunkards, criminals, liars, bums, and burdens of society" (Riggan 6). Phil's study was to "prevent, reduce and end homelessness by facilitating creative solutions through the collaboration, coordination and cooperation of regional resources and services" (Riggan 8). Homeless people are still human. As we all need shelter, food, and emotional support, so do they. The Homeless Homes Project was started by Gregory Kloehn, an artist, that turned trash into mobile homes. The Homeless Homes Project was to diminish money's use in building homes for the homeless population. The Get more content on HelpWriting.net
 • 5. When we were first introduced to this assignment, I was both excited and nervous. I was excited because it gave me the opportunity to step of my comfort zone. I was also excited to be able to get out into the community and practice some of the social work skills that we have learned in class. I was nervous because I knew it would be hard to hear the struggles of a single–parent experiencing homelessness. As someone who was raised by a single–parent, I also know how easy it can be to fall into homelessness. Overall, I think I was more excited about doing this assignment because I truly did want to hear the stories that single–parents experiencing homelessness wanted to tell. Experiences Related to Homelessness I certainly have a different...show more content... My thoughts have stayed the same about homelessness; however, I certainly have started to acknowledge that homelessness is a very real thing. I also try my hardest to recognize that these individuals are people; therefore, I now make it a point to at least make eye–contact with them on the street. Social Justice As I stated before, far too often our society ignores that homelessness is a struggle for many people. Additionally, our society often thinks these people choose to be homeless. Terra talked about an incident at a gas station, and how one of the employees at the gas station said all the people at across the street are drunks and addicts. She talked about how upset she gets when people have these misconceptions about people that are struggling with homelessness. Hearing her talk about this broke my heart because our society should not shame people for being homeless; instead, we should be looking at solutions to end homelessness. It is a human right to have basic human needs, yet our society continually provokes their unjust agenda. Our society also tends to ignore domestic violence, which is something that my mother and Terra both faced. Terra could not get any help with service providers because her children and her were not in immediate danger; although, Terra certainly knew they were in danger. • 6. Homelessness : The Problem Of Homelessness Homelessness There are many parts to the subject of homelessness, of course people talk about the solutions to it like The Ten Year Plan, then there is the history of it starting from the 1640's. Also there is discussions about Homeless Shelters and more recently Anti–homeless Legislation. Then there are always the staggering statistics. The homeless is a very one minded topic for most. Most people think that the homeless should be helped, cared for, and educated for success. This is true (at least it is politically correct). Although Homelessness started in the 1640's and has continued to be a problem today, now we have started to criminalize homelessness. There have been Anti–homelessness legislations all over Los Angeles and other areas. These legislations have made it so that... "For thousands of homeless people across the country living in areas with "anti–homeless" laws, getting shut–eye could also mean getting handcuffed." (Couch). There was an appeal to the court on December 6, 2005 between Jones and Los Angeles, "The facts underlying this appeal are largely undisputed. Edward Jones, Patricia Vinson, George Vinson, Thomas Cash, Stanley Barger, and Robert Lee Purrie ("Appellants") are homeless individuals who live on the streets of Los Angeles 's Skid Row district. Appellees are the City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Police Department ("L.A.P.D.") Chief William Bratton, and Captain Charles Beck ("Appellees" or "the City")." (Jones v. City of Los Angeles). Their days are spent hustling by prostitution or petty crimes. They prey on each other as well as people passing by that they manage to steal from. Yet still this is home to these children, where they are deprived of the most basic human needs, housing, food, and clothing. Since they have no family or relatives and no hope for the future, they have been tagged "Nobody's Children" or "Throw away Kids", living each day as if it were the last, causing them to become outlaws, which as a result is a threat to the security of the community we live in. There are various reasons that children are found homeless, ranging...show more content... However some parents are irresponsible in caring for their children. Some parents beat them, sexually abuse them, or throw them out of the family into the streets to fend for themselves, resulting in the child feeling that he or she is better off by his or her self, even living on the streets. Statistics show that sixty percent of the homeless children between eight and seventeen years of age use hallucinating substances, forty percent use alcoholic beverages, sixteen percent are drug addicts, and ninety two percent use tobacco products. In an effort to belong and be loved many of these homeless children find themselves becoming family members to gangs promoting further negativity in their lives. Since they don't have any marketable skills, they often survive by begging, stealing, and selling their bodies for money. It is not easy to help homeless children because the majority of them are afraid, and they refuse to submit information to authorities. Some homeless children have managed to escape from the homeless condition because of help from kind people and their own willingness to learn and work to overcome the anxieties and insecurities that homelessness offered them. There have been efforts on the part of organizations to solve the problem by means of charities, foster homes, orphanage, and reform. But in spite of these efforts and funds expended by the government the problem continues to rise because solving today's housing problems and meeting Get more content on HelpWriting.net

This includes people staying in motels until their money runs out, those staying with friends, those staying in shelters, and those sleeping inside or out whatever space they can find to protect themselves. The number of homeless people has been growing and it has become a serious problem in our society. Every night in Canada there are thousands of people living on the streets. The primary causes of homelessness can be there are a lack of affordable housing and the limited scale of housing assistance programs. Other causes can be insufficient income when people are frequently unable to pay for housing, food, childcare, health care and education. This means that difficult choices must be made when limited resources cover only some of these necessities because of financial reasons. Some homeless people end up on the streets because they may be physical, psychological, sexual abuse, neglect or abandonment. A study done in 1992 found that 75 percent of street youth were victims of abuse and others were youths that left home when neither parent wanted custody of them after a divorce and some youth leave to escape parental restrictions that they consider to be too cruel. In 2000, an American study estimated that 20 percent of homeless youth had been in foster care before they moved to the streets and over 50 000 children run away from home. Being homeless presents many challenges for youth that they normally live day to day, unable to develop plans for forming a productive life structure. Since many homeless youth don't have money so they start begging or selling drugs or start prostituting to earn money to cover their basic needs. Some crowds are friendly and full of energy, the kind that makes excitement bubble beneath your chest, it's almost contagious. There are angry crowds too, that are rushing and impatient. I found my life to be like an angry crowd, but I've always been kind of slow. It trampled over me like a herd of bull when i just wanted to take a break and slow down by the cool streams that flowed through my mind. The cool streams are gone now. There are many things that cause people to become homeless, such as unemployment, relationship problems, and being evicted from ones domicile either by a landlord, friend or even a family member. However, with every cause there must be an effect. Some of the effects of one becoming homeless, besides the obvious change of lifestyle, are various health problems which often times may lead to death. There are many effects that a homeless person may suffer from. Other than the obvious change in the person's life style, such as the type and quality of clothing they wear or their mode of transportation, homeless people are subject to various health effects as well. In recent studies it has been found that one out of every three homeless people suffers from some sort of mental illness. The mental illness may have been the reason the person became homeless or they may have acquired the illness from living on the streets. When a person loses everything they have worked for it may affect them mentally. Another common effect that homeless people suffer from is Nutritional deficiency, better know as malnutrition. A homeless person's diet is considerably different than that of someone who is not homeless. Since they cannot afford to eat out or make a home cooked meal, they often have to dig in trash cans to find left over food from restaurants or other people. A lot of the food they eat is spoiled or rotten and is not healthy for them, but rotten food is better than no food. In addition homeless people are also subject to abuse, both physically and sexually. It is estimated that homeless females are twenty times more likely to be sexually assaulted than a female who is not homeless, and many of these crimes will go unreported as well. Most homeless people do not have family members or someone who will check up on them. So they might be abused or even Get more content on HelpWriting.net
 • 13. Homelessness and Health Essay Trevor Gamache Homelessness and Health Introduction Homelessness has become an evolving epidemic of our time, and the health implications associated with being homeless makes it that much worse. Homeless people are at major risk for premature death and a wide range of health problems such as HIV, skin blemishes, and much more. It is very difficult for homeless people to fix their health issues due to the difficulty of accessing health care possibly because of missing health cards, or simply because of the stigma placed on them when they enter a public facility. Whatever the problem may be that is forcing more people to become homeless, it must be solved, and quickly before our world turns into a travesty. Raphael, Dennis (ed.). 2004....show more content... For instance, allow them to stay an extra month in the institution after their illness is treated, to let them go out and find a job, and hopefully bring in some money that they can build off of when they are released. How do they expect these individuals who are being treated to get on the right track when they have no money? Sooner than later they will be right back in that same place, or possibly the hospital because their bodies cannot function without food and shelter. One last interesting point made my Gupta is the question she ponders about whether these mental patients and the disorders associated with each, are consequences or are they causes of homelessness? Despite the fact that they can be either or, I arguably believe that they cause homelessness more than they are a consequence of homelessness. Sure homelessness is a tough psychological battle as much as it is a physical and emotional one, but certain mental disabilities are stigmatized, and some even prevent you from getting a job and without employment, homelessness is often the product. Poverty and Homelessness Essay examples Poverty and Homelessness Usually when a person thinks of the poor and the homeless, they think about those that are living and sleeping on park benches or under bridges. They think of those who are dirty, with ragged clothing, worn out shoes, and those begging or panhandling for food. The truth of the matter is that poverty and homelessness can affect people of any age, race or gender. More Americans are at the risk of poverty and homelessness today. There are many circumstances that can cause a person to live in poverty and become homeless. The lack of affordable housing, low paying jobs or lack of employment, and insufficient federal aid all contribute to poverty and homelessness. With the recent economic recession, many companies have moved to other parts of the country or have outsourced, leaving many without jobs. Displaced workers face difficulty finding new employment. Others lack the minimum job skills to attain employment. The lack of education increases the likelihood of a low income. It is difficult for those with little education to find work that provides a decent wage. They have less of a chance of making a desirable income. Education and basic skills are needed in acquiring jobs. Those with more education generally earn more than those that are less educated. The lack of education and training, combined with low wages, keep many families from moving up. Furthermore, the declining availability of public assistance has also increased the number of families that are in poverty or homeless. Fewer families are receiving the help they need. There were once many federal and state assistance programs that were available for those in need, but because of budget cuts, most of the funding for these programs have been cut or eliminated. As a result of loss of benefits many continue to struggle. In Anna Quindlen's, "Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Kids, Quindlen states how "[a] study done in San Diego in 1998 found that a third of homeless families had recently had Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It affects the whole family from before they were born until the day they die. Homelessness affects their jobs and education also. Homelessness has a big impact on their life. Homelessness affects a vast number of people. In the United States over 100 million people are homeless (Stearman 9). In fact, between 600,000 and 760,000 people are homeless every night (Hurley 31),and 1.3 million people are homeless at some point each year ("Impact of Homelessness on Children" 1). Homeless parents are typically very young, between twenty–five to thirty years old (Levinson 150).Homeless families have little or no money, so they have very few resources to keep them healthy. Some tend to sell their bodies or drugs to get money. When they do have resources, they get robbed at night and lose everything they had. No matter if they have resources or not they are still in bad condition. Some of the effects of being homeless may be a physical condition or health issues. Since they are homeless they sometimes have to share their resources with their family or other individuals living around them. Many people have addictions which lead to health issues, such as drinking alcohol, sniffing glue, injecting heroin, and gambling. Sometimes they had to share dirty needles. Eleven percent of them get drunk at least three times a week (Levinson 152). Poor nutrition can contribute to their health issues. They tend to go hungry twice as often as housed children because they don't have the resources to purchase food("Impact of Homelessness on Children" 2). They sometimes have to go to hotels and ask for the leftover food there. Poor nutrition increases their rate of stunted growth and anemia. They are also at a very high risk of infectious diseases. They suffer five times the rate of diarrheal infections, which cause fatal illness(Hart–Shegos 6). They also suffer from many respiratory infections at twice the rate(Hart–Shegos 6). • 17. Homelessness Essay Homelessness in our society. The existence of homeless people in our society is still evident today. Everywhere you look around our cities, parks and streets it is likely that you will witness a homeless person struggling to survive. This is most certainly a social justice issue, every Australian deserves a secure and comfortable place to dwell, not left on the streets to perish. In society the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer. People today are far to driven by work and money to see the problem of homelessness surrounding them. Those very reasons explain why I chose this topic to create an advertising campaign. On the 23rd of June, 1987 the Hawke government promised us this. "For our next term, we are setting achievable ...show more content... There are many aged Australians living in poverty. Homelessness is also a problem in Australia's aged community. Statistics prove that over twenty thousand elderly Australians are at risk of becoming homeless, or already are homeless. War Veterans are also included in this number, and that equates to approximately two thousand, five hundred homeless War Veterans. Agencies such as the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP) are set up to help get homeless people off the streets. Derived from the 1996 census, there was an estimated one hundred and five thousand homeless people across Australia. Twelve percent or twelve thousand nine hundred homeless Australians use the SAAP. It is estimated that one hundred and sixteen thousand requests for SAAP could not be met by the organization alone. Indigenous people in the SAAP program made up fourteen per cent. This is a high rate, as Aboriginals make up two per cent of the Australian population. The target audience for my campaign is Australian adults living the high life. I am trying to appeal to these people, with the hope that they may begin to donate to organizations such as SAAP. It is a campaign to open the eyes of Australians to the reality of homelessness in our societies and communities. The full severity is not known to the Australian population. As you can see, more needs to be done about the prevalence of homelessness in our society. I Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The number, according to reports, has doubled since ten years ago. And if this is not stopped, the number is expected to grow. What is needed is that school administrators are being pushed to find out the particular individuals who are actual homeless students. Homeless students, according to ABC News, are considered but are not limited to those who are living in other people's homes. Some kids and their families are staying in places such as motels, cars and even campgrounds. They still attend school even if they do not have a permanent address. The struggle is when they move around and they do not have the paper work to show for when it comes to transfer processes. Now, school administrators are being urged to keep them in school even if they lack the papers. Schools will relax enrollment procedures and it is critical that they connect these homeless students with their school services as soon as possible. • 19. There is an ever–growing number of homeless persons within our society. While it has become a popular topic of discussion as to why people become homeless little discussion has occurred about the homeless reintegrating back into society. Many steps must be taken in order for a homeless person to be able to create and maintain a steady life. There must be an acknowledgment of the barriers that led to homelessness. These barriers may be a numerous amount of things such as substance abuse, personal trauma, unhealthy relationships, health problems, or unemployment. No matter the barrier, goals need to be set and must be realistic. If the goals seem impossible to reach they will be. Finally, there must be a commitment to following through with the set goals and a realization that this is an ongoing process that will not change overnight. There is a misinformed stigma of homelessness, which is that all homeless persons are in their situation because of substance abuse – or this is at least, in part, why they are unable to overcome homelessness, and that all homeless persons are unemployed. While mental illness and chronic substance abuse are the most common disabilities within homeless communities (Schutt, 2009) they are not the only factors as to why an individual may become homeless. As mentioned above, personal traumas, health problems, unhealthy relationships and lack of employment can lead to homelessness. An alarming amount of veterans are now homeless due to coming home Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Some veterans suffer from a mental illness known as PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) when they do not seek medical help they have a higher risk of becoming homeless then those that seek medical advice. This disorder was caused by something that the military veteran experienced while in active duty during war. While the idea's that have come forth to try to solve the problem of homelessness, many people have come up with great solutions that are currently helping these individuals. The programs that are in place provide shelters for people who have been kicked to the streets and have no place to stay. These shelters provide food, clothing, water, and best of all a place to sleep. However, these shelters require the individuals staying there to seek a job during the day. The biggest problems these shelters have come from the rules that apply to those staying. The current rules allow homeless people to take advantage of the program by allowing them to stay there for up to 6 months, and then they must move to another shelter or live on the streets. The problem presented with this rule is in most cities they have more than one shelter, which allows people to abuse the system and live under the care of taxpayers indefinitely. However, most people understand that there could potentially be more than one reason why a person would need to return to a homeless shelter within 6 months to a year, but not spend almost their entire life using Get more content on HelpWriting.net
