Essay on The Cask of Amontillado
The Cask of Amontillado
"I must not only punish, but punish with impunity. A wrong is unredressed when retribution
overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such
to him who has done the wrong." With these ferverous words from the introductory paragraph
of Edgar Allan Poe's Cask of Amontillado, the story of Montresor's revenge begins. Poe repeatedly
stresses the need for revenge due to bitterness and resentment in Montresor's character towards
Fortunato, but more importantly, stress is placed on revenge by which the victim realizes their
injustice towards the redresser. Unfortunately, it seems that Montresor is denied this pure and
encompassing revenge when his victim,...show more content...
We soon see foreshadowing of Fortunato's impending doom when the issue of Montresor's shield of
arms is brought into the conversation as "A huge human foot d'or, in a field azure; the foot
crushes a serpent rampant whose fangs are imbedded in the heel.". Even more appropriate is
Montresor's family motto, translated as, "No one wounds me with impunity". Such a
visual depiction and mental conviction due to family honor and history creates all the more impetus
in Montresor to carry out the punishment that Fortunato deserves for wronging him, and more likely
the family honor. When Montresor finally captures Fortunato in the catacombs, the climax of his
precisely calculated deed, he revels in the sound of Fortunato's chains rattling, and "that I might
hearken to it with the more satisfaction, I ceased my labors and sat down upon the bones".
However, his satisfaction soon turns to apprehension when suddenly "a succession of loud and
shrill screams, bursting from the throat of the chained form, seemed to thrust me violently
back". He hesitates at this moment, when his revenge is sweetest, when he should bask in the
suffering of his "enemy", and finds himself contemplating the shrill screams of his
captive! He does eventually compose

The Cask Of Amontillado
In the story of Edgar Allen Po the story called "Cask of Amontillado, Montessori motto was if you
insult me, I will get revenge on you. Basically do not mess with me or you will not see tomorrow. In
this particular story Montessori wanted to kill his friend, because he insulted him and he wants
revenge. This essay will be talking about different literary devices; style, symbolism, theme, etc, and,
how they came into this particular story.
During this particular story, it was interesting, but also odd because he did not give a reason for why
he killed his friend. The setting is when and where the story take place. The definition of plot is the

Irony. Irony is the unexpected. For example, of irony is "the thousand injuries of Fortunato I had
borne as I best could; but when he ventured upon insult. I vowed revenge". He saying his best
friend insulted him, and now Montresor want revenge on his friend named Fortunato, so he will
learn not to insult him. Also, a succession of loud and shrill scream, bursting suddenly from the
throat of the chained form, seemed to thrust me violently back. For a brief moment I hesitated I
trembled". When Montresor puts the chains on Fortunato he screamed to let him know that he didn't
like what was happening, Montresor hesitated but he did nothing to stop on what was happening.
He wanted revenge. The suspense is the confusion delay and danger. The next important thing is
suspense "Be it so I said replacing the tool beneath the cloak, and again offering him my arm. He
leaned upon it heavily. We continued our route in the search Amontillado". Montresor was
pretending to be Fortunato's friend until he got him to where he wanted him to be. He was using
him until he got him into a closet, and it worked. Montresor has been planning his friend's death for
a while and he needed to find a way to do it. The theme is some topic/conflict? The moral lesson. The
next important thing in this outranged story is the theme. The theme is Montresor vs himself
wanting to kill his friend

"The Cask of Amontillado" Essay
The Cask of Amontillado is considered to be one of the best short stories. Written by Edgar Allan
Poe in first person and having all the main events as a three hundred page fiction book, The Cask
of Amontillado is a complete novel. This short story has several themes which function from the
first page of the story such as: suspense, fear, and revenge. Fear, suspense, and the upcoming
revenge can be seen on the first line of the story when Montresor says, "The thousand injuries I
had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge." This line prepares
the reader for the whole development of the story; it gives the reader a sense of fear, tells him that
there is going to be revenge, but keeps him wanting to know...show more content...
This keeps the audience with suspense, and fear; wanting to know what was going to happen
with Fortunato. Had Montresor put something on his drink? After a couple of drinks Montresor
warns Fortunato about the danger of consuming this wine because of the high levels of nitre that
it has, foreshadowing for the audience, telling us the venom Fortunato is consuming. When
Fortunato starts to feel bad Montresor offers him a drink to make him feel better, this is not an
act of sympathy, it's just to keep Fortunato alive until his burial ground; and also to keep the
audience waiting for the action to come. Some of the irony used on this story can be seen when
Montresor asks Fortunato about how he's feeling with the nitre and Montresor warns him by
saying "we will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, and beloved.
You are happy, as once I was. You are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter. We will go back;
you will be ill and I cannot be responsible." This phrases show all the irony necessary for a story to
be ironic: first, Montresor saying that Fortunato's health is precious; second, when he says that
Fortunato is a man to be missed; but after that, saying that to him it doesn't matter if he dies; and
finally, saying that he will not be responsible. Later on the story Montresor is offended by Fortunato
when the fortuned one tells him that he

Essay about The Cask of Amontillado
Edgar Allen Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado," is a story of revenge to the highest degree. This
theme is evident in the first sentence, "the thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best
could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge." The suggestion of vengeance is
repeated several more times in the opening paragraph. Poe gives us a view at premeditated murder
from the details in his story told through the eyes of Montresor. While he carefully removes
unnecessary parts of the story, Poe elaborately and vividly relates this bone–chilling tale of revenge
while keeping his audience waiting for more. The theme of Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" is
reprisal and he uses all the elements of fiction (plot, setting,...show more content...
Perhaps Poe derived the name Montresor from the word monster, which after reading the story
many would agree Montresor is indeed. In addition, Montresor mentions Luchesi, an acquaintance
of both the men. Montresor claims that he was going to have Luchesi taste Amontillado, because
he knows that Fortunato will be outraged by this and insist on trying it himself. Fortunato does not
believe that Luchesi is as good of an expert as he himself is. Poe uses the name Luchesi, which is
derived from the Italian word В‘lucrative.' Irony is used in the beginning scene of Poe's "The Cask
of Amontillado." When we first meet Fortunato he is dressed as a jester. According to the story, "he
had on a tight–fitting parti–striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and
bells." This is an important part of the story, because we know that Montresor wishes for revenge
and wants Fortunato to feel like a clown as he felt when Fortunato had insulted him.
Ironic language is also used in "The Cask of Amontillado." When Fortunato first volunteers to try the
Amontillado, Montresor claims that he worries about his В‘friend's' severe cough and that going into
the damp, cold catacombs will not be good for his health. But Fortunato insists, as Montresor has
counted on him doing. Later, while being led through the catacombs, Fortunato begins to cough.
Montresor tells him that
