This document summarizes a presentation on unlearning to learn for faculty. It discusses how learner profiles, learning styles, technology, and learner motivations are changing. Learner profiles are changing as adults are intimidated by new knowledge and have poor retention. Learning styles are also changing and require ensuring the right mix of storytelling, audiovisual, presentations, discovery and group activities. Learner motivations are changing and require respecting learners, asking questions to help them discover answers, bringing in emotions, and establishing benefits of learning. Technology is changing classrooms and requires engaging students as facilitators using tools like FreeMind, YouTube, WhatsApp on smartphones to share materials and create collaborative groups.

4. Why are adults poor learners?
Don’t like to get assessed Poor Cumulative Learners
Adults are intimidated by new/fresh
knowledge
Very poor retention spans and low
reflection time
Adults are poor Losers
23. How to Motivate Adult Learners
Respect learners and
treat them as a
potential learning
resource for the rest of
the class
1
If the person comes to
you with a problem,
don’t solve it. Ask the
right questions – let
him DISCOVER. When
a person discovers,
retention is higher
2
Bring emotions into
learning. Classic
example – LIC RAISE
Program – Dialogue in
the Dark – An activity to
become emotionally
charged
3
Establish to the learner
what is the benefit to
learn

26. Engage Students Better
Move away from
being a teacher to
a facilitator
1
Zap them with
contemporary
knowledge – Have
a contemporary
resource list
2
Usage of
Audio/Visuals &
Stories in the
training
pedagogy creates
a high impact
3
Encourage them to
ask the right
questions and
DISCOVER the
right answer,
themselves
