2. Production Company:
A production company is basically in charge of creating the film and making sure it meets
financial targets and also oversee all the decisions made with regards to the script, cast, plot
etc. Basically they monitor every stage of what happens from the moment a film is made
in the writing stage to the moment it makes it on the big screen and is seen by thousands
around the world. It is their job to find all the production staff like a director and editor and
also in charge with finding the cast for the film. They must also take full responsibility for any
mishaps that may occur such as damage to set, any injuries to production staff or cast and
be able to compensate from that to minimize costs and also make sure the film stays on
track to be completed by the required deadline, so it can be distributed to cinemas. Some
of the big production companies are Universal, Warner Bros, Paramount and 20th Century Fox.
3. Independent Films:
Independent films are those made outside the big production companies, like 20th
Century Fox, Warner Bros, Dreamworks etc. They are made to a budget with these
independent companies working to a significantly smaller budget to those of the big
production companies. Because of this many independent films fail to be widely shown
because of the expense associated with doing so. The less mainstream cinemas such as
Picturehouse would show these films as they try to tailor to the less mainstream market.
Many independent films nowaday are often regarded as the better films, because they
are a better, more gripping visual experience with a better plotline, rather than the big
blockbusters which are made to just get lots of moneys so have to make a film that can be
enjoyed slightly by many groups rather than making one very good film for one specific
target audience.
4. Momentum Pictures
Momentum Pictures are one of the leading distributers of independent films in the UK.
As a result for our production they would be the first point of call when distributing our
film as are also operating under the ‘Independent’ bracket.
Momentum Pictures on average release about 20 films a year around the world and as a
result despite their ‘independant’ status they are well known and recognised internation-
ally.
This is a reason we have chosen Momentum Pictures for our film distribution because they
work with independant releases which is what we are intending to release. Meaning it’s
cost effective for us as well as allowing our film to be more successful than it could be
elsewhere, because of our small budget we need to ensure our film can get as much
reputation as possible for as little cost and Momentum Pictures seems the best choice for
us.
Another reason behind us choosing Momentum Pictures is because in recent years they
have been in charge of distributing some of the best credited horror films of recent years.
One of their releases was ‘Sinister’ one of the highest credited horror films of all time, some
even saying it’s the best the genre’s ever seen. Some other of M.P’s big accolades include
House at the End of the Street, and also the critically acclaimed Woman In Black.
