Suicide is a serious issue, with 18 veterans dying by suicide daily in the United States in 2009, amounting to over 6,000 suicides that year. Warning signs of suicide include talking about death, changes in personality, feelings of hopelessness, and low self-esteem. During World War II, some soldiers carried cyanide tablets to take if shot down, in order to avoid capture. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a primary risk factor for suicide among veterans. More support is needed for veterans returning from war.
