English for Professionals is an intensive course for people who are working in the Francisco de
Paula Santander Ocaña University. The course further develops English language strategies for
self learning and focuses on the skills and strategies required the professional career.

Who will this course benefit?
The course is most suitable for teachers and administrative from our University who want
a successful professional career in their life. You may be: a current or past worker at the
University or specialization student.

To succeed in a professional career in Universities is required high level English skills,
generally equating to Intermediate level B1 and above in Colombia . The Francisco de Paula
Santander Ocaña University requirements are also placing a greater emphasis on English
language skills in the academic process.



What does the course involve?
English for Professionals is n a intensive course run over 3 weeks. Classes are held on:
during the week at 6:30 up to 8:30 pm

 It is expected that you spend an equal amount of time on out of classroom with projects and
personal study.

The teaching methodology is based on a communicative and interactive approach, with
participants doing pair work, group tasks and oral presentations. A wide range of readings
are used and participants are encouraged to ask and respond to questions, participate in
discussions and relate their own real life experiences. Materials are drawn from a range of
sources including websites, textbooks, journals and newspapers, television and radio. Most
materials used are Colombian and reflect the communication skills needed by professionals in a
multicultural society.

Course content includes:

• macro skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking)
• Colombian English in culture and academic contexts
• globalisation
• business ethics
• meeting rituals and routines
• employment - recruitment, job applications, interviews and advancement
• computer research skills
• presentation skills
• Web skills
• business correspondence conventions - emails, memos, formal letters, reports, agendas and
minutes
• company documentation.


Course outcomes:

At the completion of the course, you will have:

• Developed and improved resources of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills within an
Academic context
• A greater understanding of the English language academic purpose, workplace, culture and
the confidence to communicate effectively in this context
• Developed communication skills that will enable you to advance in your professional career
• Gained language learning strategies for your future AS A PROFESSIONAL AND HUMAN
BEING.


Entry Criteria
Participants for this program do not necessarily need to be able to demonstrate a level of English language.
Listening:                                                Can generally follow the main points of group
                                                          discussions, meetings, lectures, electronic media
Speaking:                                                 Can participate in discussions, make presentations and
                                                          respond to questions
Reading:                                                  Can get the essential meaning of most correspondence,
                                                          semi-technical materials and specialised textbooks
Writing:                                                  Can convey clear meaning in most formal and informal
                                                          communications
