1. The Descent review (500 words)
Purpose & Genre
The Descent is a horror movie, and of course, its purpose is to scare the audience,
and it does that just perfectly. With excellent jump scares, good use of eerie
music, and a very good level of gore make this potentially the perfect horror
movie. However, the movie must also be able to entertain said audience. And it
also does that very well. The movie is good at entertaining the audience because
it has a level of surprise, gore, horror, and interesting plot twists. We spend the
first half of the movie learning about the
Form & Content
The Descent is 99 minute long, which is a little longer than the average horror
movie, as most are around 90 minutes. However the extra ten minutes of movie
help finish off the story and allow the story line to end with a story line hanger to
make the viewers want to see more. For the first half (maybe third) we don’t
actually see the monsters. This makes it scarier when we actually see the
monsters in the light, clearly for the first time.
Summary
The Descent is a good movie that follows all of the standard codes and
conventions that a horror movie should follow, and then adds some. There is a
good story line, a decent amount of jump scares, and a few interesting plot
twists, and characters with an interesting back-story and good story lines. We
also see good elements of foreshadowing, such as Sarah’s husband cheating on
her with Juno, Sarah’s friend. There are also foreshadowing references to the
monsters, as we see clues to the fact that they are hiding in the cave, and if you
pay attention, you can actually see them in the corner of shot, or in shadows. The
clever use of foreshadowing and plot twists makes this a good movie.
