1. Writing Assessment: Quebec’s Independence
Writing Prompt: Quebec is the largest French speaking
community in the Americas. They were independent for
230 years before becoming part of the British Empire in
1762. Today, Quebec is fully integrated into the Canadian
government but some Quebecois want independence from
Canada. Should Quebec become an independent country?
Use the following questions to help you write your essay:
Introduction Paragraph: Describe Quebec’s independence
movement as compared to other independence movements we
have discussed. Why does Quebec want to be an independent
nation?
Body Paragraph 1: Describe Quebec’s culture, including language,
art, and religion. How is Quebec’s culture different from the rest
of Canada?
Body Paragraph 2: Describe the issues facing Quebec becoming
independent, specifically political and economic infrastructure
(population, healthcare, taxes, transportation, etc.)? Are these
problems more than Quebec can handle alone?
Body Paragraph 3/ Conclusion: Using the evidence given in each
paragraph to back up your answer, should Quebec become an
independent country? Why or why not?
