What Is Social Media

 1. 1. What is social media?
 2. 2. Social media is technology that allows us to communicate with each other in new ways, other than speaking to people directly.
 3. 3. What is good about social media?
 4. 4.

Keeps you updated on news

Keeps you updated on friends (not Ross, Rachael, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler and Joey)

Allow quick communications with communities

New updates allow us to physically see pictures and videos

New ways to communicate without using mobile (unless using social networks on your mobile)

Easily accessible on your mobile

Majority of the time it is FREE!

 5. 5. Our own use

Facebook

YouTube

Online Gaming (PS3, X box 360 and Wii)

Hotmail

Twitter

E-mails

MySpace/Bebo (although not used anymore)

Windows Live Messenger

Video Jug

 6. 6. Developments of social networking sites

This is a craze which has only recently taken off in the last 5 to 10 years. The first major social networking site MySpace allowed users to create their own home page choosing style, content and as well as this the music that played on their page. This was originally designed for users to follow bands but soon became more social as users were able to keep in touch with friends. This became most popular with teenagers.

Another popular social networking site was Bebo however this varied from MySpace as it wasn’t centred around music. Also this created a split with cliques as MySpace seemed more in touch with Indy/ Emo/ Goth types where as Bebo was more directed towards ‘chavs’.

Modern social networking sites have now become very popular with an older audience. Although still predominantly used by teenagers, sites such as Facebook are growing more and more popular with an older audience. An example is parent of students at University who are able to keep in touch with their children while they are away. I feel the main reason though is because the age of the internet is only just arriving to the older generation as teenagers have been using it throughout their school lives where as an older audience is perhaps slightly new to the concept.

Twitter has now become very popular with celebrities and fans as celebrities use twitter to keep their fans updated. This is also useful for groups to use to post meetings or plans for all of them to see.

 7. 7.

Here is my profile page where anyone can see the photos I have added to my profile and my comments to other people.

 8. 8. Here is my example of Twitter where you can follow a range of celebrities by just searching them on ‘Find people’. Here is Fearne Cotton who I’m a follower off (along with 341,162 others). WTF
