2. Petroleum and Petrolatum
Already banned for use in cosmetics in the
European Union, studies show they may cause
cancer. Skin irritant and allergen. Can contain
carcinogens, neurotoxins and reproductive toxins.

3. Cont’d
 Petrolatum comes from crude oil, and is not
a renewable resource, causing huge
negative environmental impact. Traps

4. Mineral Oil
Related to petroleum jelly. Can
contain carcinogens, neurotoxins and
reproductive toxins. Causes
breakouts and/or blackheads around

5. Parabens:
Linked to birth defects, sterility,
cancer, and organ toxicity. Known
for being endocrine disruptors,
they interfere with hormones.

6. Paraffin
A by-product of petroleum. The
Environmental Protection Agency has
found over 20 dangerous compounds in
large quantities including acetone, benzene,
toluene, and lead. Can contain carcinogens,
neurotoxins and reproductive toxins. Traps
bacterial and dirt, and blocks the absorption
of vitamins and minerals into the skin.

7. Propylene Glycol: May cause damage to the
central nervous system, heart, and
liver. Also used as “anti-freeze.”
Phthalates: Increase likelihood of cell
mutation, disrupt endocrine receptors, and
are linked to birth defects.
Lanolin: A product of sheep’s wool,
chemicals are used to dissolve the fat from
the wool. In addition, it may be
contaminated with other plants.

8. Phenol, Menthol or SalicylicAcid
These cause the “tingling” you may
feel when applying, which is actually
layers of your skin, meant to protect
you, peeling off, making your lips
more chapped and exposed to
environmental harm (like wind, sun,
and pollution).

9. Artificial Color, Flavor or
Scent: Skin irritant. May contain
carcinogens, neurotoxins and
reproductive toxins.

added in the form of Vitamin
