Luminous intensity is measured in candela and describes the concentration of light emitted from a source in a particular direction. The illuminance on a surface is measured in lux and describes the amount of light falling on an area, calculated by taking the luminous flux in lumens emitted from a source and dividing by the area in square meters. Lux is the standard unit used to quantify how much luminous flux is spread over a given area when light arrives from a source.
