What doesmise-en-scene mean?
The arrangement of the scenery, props, lighting etc. on the stage of a theatrical
production or on the set of a film.
Verisimilitude-the appearance of being true or real
What are the 6 key areas of mise-en-scene?
Colour, props, lighting, costume, actors, set/location, blocking/performance
Colour:
How is colour used in the 3 below pictures?
Cinderella has a white dress
which has connotations to
being pure and innocence.
The midnight blue represents
the time as at midnight she
turns back into what she
was.
2. Mise-en-scene
Props:
Option 1 - You have to provide props for a tense police interview between two
officers and one suspected murderer. Decide what props you would incorporate and
how the actors should be directed to use them.
Option 2 – You have to provide props for a romantic meal between two characters
on their first date. Decide what props you would incorporate and how the actors
should be directed to use them.
Props needed:
How would actors be directed to use them:
Location:
Can be a purpose built set or a real location
Blocking/Performance:
Blocking refers to the positioning and movement of actors within the frame,
both in relation to each other and in relation to the camera (which represents
us, the audience)
Performance covers all aspects of the actual acting – gesture, expression,
accent etc
Costume:
What can we interpret from these costumes?
The family look of working class and may have financial issues due to the unbranded
clothing which would be cheaper worn as it looks cheaper, these outfits would be
referred to as ‘chavy’ by the media at that time, the mother is also wearing an
unflattering outfit which suggest she doesn’t care much about her appearance
3. Mise-en-scene
Lighting:
How is lighting being used to create mood in the following examples?
The lighting is low key and dim which creates a sense of mystery and to raise the
tension. In the scene the two characters are well lit compared to the background
where the walls are dimly lit to create a contrast and focus the viewers’ attention on
the main characters
