Some of the Qualities of a GOOD
ENGLISH TEACHER are:
•A good English teacher must have
mastery over the language.
•He/she should have good expression
power both verbal as well as written.
•He/she be a passionate lover of
English.

•He/she should have knowledge of the aims
and objectives of teaching English at the
junior and senior stages.
•He/she must know the art of
dramatization.
•He/she should adopt different methods and
approaches of teaching English. Further,
teaching should be activity-centered such
that the student enjoys learning the
language.

•His/her handwriting should be attractive as the
students imitate the handwriting of the teacher.
•He should be fond of reading books.
•He should be well qualified. At the junior level,
the minimum qualification of the English
teacher is graduation with English literature as
one the elective subjects with a professional
degree of teaching. At the senior stage, an
English teacher should possess a research degree
in English literature.

•The duties of the English
teacher are fourfold i.e. to teach
linguistic skills, to teach about
the civilization, to appreciate
the great works of literature and
to work for international
understanding.

•He should also keep adding to his
professional competency. He should
attend workshops, seminars,
workshops, refresher courses in
language teaching. He should attend
courses in phonetics, pronunciation,
intonation, grammar, style and
translation.

•He must be encouraging and
sympathetic towards his
students.
•He should be patient with his
students especially those who
are week in the subject.
•He should be creative.
•He should be self-analyst. 11

•A teacher of English should have a
balanced personality with imagination
and enthusiasm.
•He should be socially adjustable.
•He should be sound physically and
mentally.
•He should give due respect to the
child.
•He should be a man of good
temperament.

•He should have faith in his profession.
•He should maintain congenial
relationship with his colleagues as well
as with the parents of his students.
•He should be punctual, hard working
and well-dressed.
•He should not be partial to any
student.

•He should have good knowledge of
sociometrics.
•He should have a good knowledge of
Child Psychology.
•He should contribute towards international
understanding and cooperation.
The teacher of English should be bilingual
as he belongs to two worlds i.e. a loyal
citizen of his country and an unofficial
ambassador of another.

•Lastly, the modern
teacher of English
should have the modern
equipments useful to
teach English language.

What is Professional Development?
Professional development covers a wide range of topics.
Professional development can be structured as in-person or
online courses, day-long lectures, or conferences that aim to
further one’s educational knowledge.
Those who partake in professional development can focus on
an array of options, with topics that can be: subject-specific,
focused on mentorship, educational approaches, technology,
leadership, advanced degrees, and more.
Professional development provides teachers with a way to
continue expanding their skillset and to update their teaching
practices to fall in line with new technology, educational
standards, and the ever changing landscape of students’ needs.

  • 6. Some of the Qualities of a GOOD ENGLISH TEACHER are: •A good English teacher must have mastery over the language. •He/she should have good expression power both verbal as well as written. •He/she be a passionate lover of English. 6
