The Poem The Nettles Poem
Nettles This poem is an account of the day the poet's son got stung when he fell into a bed of nettles
and his reaction to that. It shows the poets paternal instincts and his sense of duty to protect his
young son. This poem is a singular paragraph, flowing organically and its lack of punctuation and
multiple run on sentences which show us that's it's the poets chain of thoughts. At the first glance,
the poem seems simple, however as you analyze it many of its layers are uncovered. The title of this
poem itself seems simple and direct. However, 'nettles' are the antagonist in this poem, and therefore
by naming it the readers realize that the poet is focusing on the most important thing to him at that
time, which are the nettles and how he wants to destroy them. More important are the lessons learnt
than hardships the poet faced while eradicating them and also more important than ... Show more

He sharpened his weapons and headed out to destroy the nettle bed. The poet's only focus at that
time was completely eradicating the nettle bed, so he "slashed in fury with it", slowly releasing his
anger, making the process cathartic. The poet continued his military metaphor and kept attacking the
nettles until "not a nettle in that fierce parade stood upright", and then to destroy the nettle bed
completely once and for all he "lit a funeral pyre to burn the fallen dead" yet again comparing these
nettles to soldiers. Until now this entire battle between the poet and the nettle bed seemed entirely
one sided and the readers were sure that the poet would emerge victorious, as there wasn't a single
nettle left. Not only had the poet slashed them but he had burnt them too. However, just like the poet
the reader too had underestimated the power of nature. The poet was arrogant to believe that he
could destroy nature with his weapon, however, he forgot that nature was

The Happiness System, By Daniel Nettle
Happiness is something we as a human race value and treasure, but obtaining it and maintaining its
presence in our lives can prove to be a difficult and exhausting task. Daniel Nettle writes that: "Most
of us understand that the big issue in life is not being joyful, which is at best going to be an
occasional perk, but being happy in the sense of generally satisfied overall (33)." Throughout his
novel, Nettles explores the depths of happiness and what it means to experience it in all forms and
aspects across generations and cultures, and how it helps develop us into the people that we are, and
our success as a living species. The happiness system is designed to help us gain a better
understanding of our core values, and to push us to continually strive to excel. Stagnancy is not
beneficial to our relative fitness as a human race, and we must remain motivated by some force to
avoid its grasp, as it has been proven over time to be a deadly mechanism of nature. Our
"happiness" will be discovered as a result of not just what we choose to pursue in life, but how we
choose to pursue it, and the fact we even chose to pursue it at all. Because happiness is in itself hard
to define, psychologists have developed a scale of various levels of happiness to help describe it.
But to understand the levels, one must first be introduced to the idea of "flow." As defined by
Nettles, flow is a "state characterized by total absorption in a challenging activity for which the
individual has the

The Deeper Meaning Of The Color Purple
The Color Purple by Alice Walker is about a girl named Celie who gets sold off to another man by
her father because she is "ugly. She deals with rape from her father who had already impregnated
her twice and sold one child and killed the other, abuse, and slavery. Her sister on the other hand,
got to go to school and become an educated woman because she was "beautiful". All throughout the
story, Celie thinks that she was isolated and forgotten because her sister moved away to Africa to
preach, but little does she know, her sister had been writing letters to her the whole time but Mr. ___
(that's the name of her new "owner") had been keeping them from her. Celie went on to fight for her
rights, express her inner beauty and found her children. She escaped from Mr. ___ and became a
loving mom and great business women. The deeper meaning of this book is to never give up no
matter how hard the situation is. Celie kept going and fought for her rights even though she would
get abused and neglected. The deeper meaning of this book is to never give up because even when
she got set back, Celie still escaped. For example, her father would call her ugly and say that she

Nettles Poetic Analysis
'Nettles' Poetic Analysis By Ashraf Mohamed The poem 'Nettles' was written by Vernon Scannell
who has written this poem to portray a father–son relationship. Vernon Scannell has targeted this
poem at parents, as they would be able to relate to the perspective and feelings of the speaker, since
a parent is can understand what the poet is talking about. The poem talks about Scannell's war
experiences, which gives it a darker meaning. The poem is written in iambic pentameter, which
creates a da–dum pattern throughout the poem. The 'da' sound could almost represent the father
trying to fight these "regiments of spite" to protect his son from the menacing world, whilst the
'dum' sound is more plosive and therefore symbolises the father ... Show more content on

This is a good example of hyperbole. He dramatizes the pain that the boy is feeling. Scannell uses
military imagery, with nettles being referred to as a 'regiment' on 'parade' that return as 'tall recruits'.
The pain created by 'raw', 'sharp wounds' and 'burn' deepens the juxtaposition of the child's physical
injury, as well as the parent's emotional pain, which is somewhat contrasted by the language which
presents the child as vulnerable and innocent. Overall, I think that that this poem explores the
relationship of the father and the son in a way which Vernon Scannell can talk about his past
experience in being in the war which gives the reader an opportunity to look at the poem from a
different perspective. Scannell has written this poem in retrospect in the past and the poem itself, in
its narrative tone, shows the reader two different stories that are symbolised into one poem. By

Nettles: Poetry and Son
Nettles by Vernon Scannell
The poem 'Nettles' by Vernon Scannell revolves around a father's perspective on an accident
involving his son, through which the poet explores a father–son relationship, wherein the father tries
to protect his son from the various difficulties in life. However, despite his efforts to shield his son
from these problems, they will be a constant threat in life. The boy here is a metaphor for the army,
with the nettles being an extended metaphor of recurring war. The combined effect of these
metaphors throws light on the difficulties in life. The poet has crafted a title which aptly uses
symbolism to depict the nettles as evil. A cursory reading of the poem portrays the protective
instinct of a father for his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poet uses personification by describing the nettles with the human quality of being 'fierce'. This
makes them seem like the enemy's army which has been destroyed by the father. The poet ends the
stanza using an enjambment to possibly show the continued struggles in his son's life, leading the
readers to connect emotionally to the father's devotion to his son's happiness.
The final stanza revolves around the nettles retorting to the father's attacks. In the first line, the
father is shown to give the nettles a funeral. This shows the father ending the troubles caused by the
nettles. With effective choice of words, the poet describes how the 'sun' and 'rain', representative of
nature and its power, finally help the nettles grow. The word 'recruits' shows the enemy army was
returning and regrouping. Furthermore, the word 'tall' depicts the nettles being stronger and healthier
than before and their readiness for the battle. The final line states that the son would be hurt by the
nettles soon and again. While problems won't wane with time, despite all of the father's efforts, the
son will have to find a way to learn to adapt to the renewed struggles in his life.
On a concluding note, while an individual may have multiple protectors, the lesson of independence
is fundamental to life. Hurdles must be encountered and tackled to emerge with strength and power.

'Be not deceived by the appearance of things, for show is not the substance' – Anonymous
When we write or read there are two levels of comprehension. The first is the literary sense, where
one doesn't dive beneath the surface to find meaning. The second is symbolism. When used
properly, this tool adds meaning and depth to one's literature and allows one to recognize and
understand more thoroughly. To find a symbol of myself was no easy task, but when thought over
thoroughly, stinging nettle came to mind. One does not necessarily think of beauty, softness or
practicality when they think of stinging nettle, and yet there is so much more to this prickly plant
that meets the eye. Like me, this complex plant has characteristics that people may be ... Show more

Good for our health, helpful in our home, easy to care for, hardy and strong. This magical herb so
helpful for women, for reducing hypertension, for stopping the flow of blood from a wound, for
curing the common cold, for supporting the kidneys, and for so much more. One might expect to
find nettle in everyone's medicine cabinet, and yet when is the last time you went out to the field to
pluck a few stems of nettle when you had a runny nose or blocked sinuses? One does not see nettle
next to Cold–FX and Benadryl at their local pharmacy. Nor do we see nettle in the labels of our
clothing despite its strong fibers and abundance worldwide. Though hemp fibers have been used for
thousands of years, they are more difficult to harvest than cotton (although perhaps the growing
concern for our environment may mean stinging nettle fabric may become more mainstream in the
not–so–distant future.) Like this outwardly simple, but deeply complex weed, with a little bit of

The Theory Of Culture : A Conflict View
The identities that each person possesses is influenced according to their attitudes, values and
beliefs embedded in their culture. When people hear the word cult, the images of satan worshipping,
animal sacrifices and evil, pagan rituals automatically come to mind. However, in reality, the
majority of cults do not involve these things and are in fact simply a religious system with alternate
beliefs. The word though refers to an unorthodox sect whose members distort the original doctrines
of the religion. Heaven's Gate is a cult that is centred in California, founded by Marshall Herff
Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles in 1993. They are a UFO based 'destructive doomsday' cult who

Most historians use the more neutral term 'new religious movement' instead of the cult, because
there is no one definition of cults, their number and membership cannot be accurately measured
even today (Sarah Pike, 2016). New religious groups are regularly developed from another, more
accepted religion. An example of this is Christianity, which first began as a cult extending from
Judaism (Sarah Pike, 2016). While this was regularly the case, many cults did not begin as religious
groups. A famous example of this is the movement called Synanon, which was originally organised
to rehabilitate drug addicts, but then later changed into a commune and won legal recognition as a
religion (Sarah Pike, 2016). A theory among UFO groups, there is a widespread belief that
extraterrestrials have no vocal cords, an atrophied digestive system and no sexual organs (B.A.
Robinson, 2009). This is symbolic of three common religious disciplines: silence, fasting and
celibacy. These attitudes may have somewhat shaped what the UFO group Heaven's Gate believed
in.
Heaven's Gate is a California–centered notoriously known 'destructive doomsday cult' consisting of
women and men ranging from 26 to 72 years old. On the 23rd of March, 1997, 21 women and 18
men voluntarily committed suicide in three groups on three consecutive days (B.A. Robinson,
2009). Heaven's Gate was the latest of three organisations founded by Marshall Herff Applewhite
and Bonnie Lu

over a period of thousands of years. One common tradition that may seem very visible to outsiders

For this essay, I will be studying nettles by Vernon Scannell and Sister Maude by Christina Rossetti.
Vernon Scannell was British poet and author and was most famous as a war poet as he fought in
world 2 war two. The poem nettles is about his war experience in 1944. Christina Rossetti is an
English poet that wrote a poem about Sister Maude that is a tale of two sisters feuding over a lover.
These two poems show feeling and attitudes therefore I will be analysing how it is shown in the
poems The poem reveals Vernon Scannell own experience of war zone life and his hatred of war. He
uses the elements of nature to express his negative view of war, and this is immediately expressed in
the first line of the first stanza. The poem is making reference ... Show more content on

has different relationship with her mother. The relationship between the sisters was hatred as it
clearly shown throughout the poem especially when the sister said 'bide with you death and sin'. The
fact she said that shows the different relationship she had with her sister as we can see how she

Short Story The river was roaring past the children and their teacher, as the group of kids tried in

What Is Briony's Transition To Adulthood?
The novel Atonement (2001) written by Ian McEwan is a post–modern masterpiece that was later
made into what is a largely faithful film adaptation. Like the novel, the film Atonement (2007),
directed by Joe Wright, tells the story of Briony a girl living in the ethereal age between childhood
and adolescence. As such, she embroiled in an ontological conflict between the girlish innocence,
adult desire, and human jealousy. She spends half her time living in the world of her fantastical
stories and the other half drawn increasingly into the adult world that she doesn't quite yet
understand. Her transition to adulthood is hindered by her solipsistic mentality as she turns to
inwards to story–telling to mitigate the sense of uncontrollable chaos. ... Show more content on

Furthermore, the gardens of a British childhood on warm hazy summer days occupies a mythical
and perhaps romanticised status in their minds. The film relies not on words but on their absence in
addition to the presumed shared experience of the audience with the hazy childhood days of an
ethereal and bountiful British garden in bloom. Using far fewer words the film, just like the movie,
brings the reader to the confusing and blurred line between reality and the perilous maelstrom that
separates childhood from adulthood. The scene in which Briony thrashes amongst the nettles is also
included in the film which exaggerated diegetic sound effects of the whacking stick and breaking
nettles. The aesthetic of the scene is faithful to the text of the book but not in regards to relaying
every microscopic thought of Briony but to convey to the viewer the quasi–fantastical world that
Briony has created that confuses her everyday reality. Like the pre–Raphaelite movement the films
aesthetic does not concern itself with dedicated depictions of the world exactly as the audience
understands it but rather to relay and uncanny experience of a common British childhood event. Just
like a Hunt, Everett or Millais painting the film gives the viewers a world of romanticised distress
and tenuous grip of reality such that the depiction borders on the fantastical. In this way, the film
aims to engage the viewer in an

two to move under the covers." Nettle folded the top blanket down, allowed the twins to clamber
clumsily beneath it, then wiggled between them and pulled the blanket back up. The twins snuggled
into her side. After half an hour of staring at the ceiling with a creased brow, Nettle managed to fall
asleep. The next morning, she woke with the rising of the sun. Its rays filtered into the room through
the outer wall, which had a translucency that revealed mountains in the distance. "Guys, wake up."
Nettle slid the covers off of them. Sage rolled over, blew a raspberry into the pillow, and stretched,
accidentally hitting Basil in the face. He sat up and glared at her. "Sage!" Basil complained. "Sorry,
Bay," Sage giggled, rolling over again. She looked around the room and blinked. "What happened to
the roof?" "We went with the traders," Nettle said. "It'll be fun. The food will be better." "No more

Compare Nettles And Manhunt
The poems 'Manhunt' and 'Nettles' both explore pain however both poems explore it in different
ways. The poem Nettles explores the hurt of a young boy who has been stung by nettles and his
father's emotional reaction of it. Whereas Manhunt explores the physical and emotional pain caused
by war.
In the poem nettles, the young boy who fell into the nettle bed is experiencing the pain. We can tell
this as the poem starts with 'my son aged three fell in the nettle bed'.The poem consists of a single
stanza and has alternately rhyming lines. The poem is a narrative account, focused on the father's
perspective of an accident involving his son. He shows us how the young boy has reacted to the
physical pain of the nettles.
The writer emphasizes the vulnerability of of the boy. This is made clear in the phrase 'with sobs
and tears'. 'Sobs' shows how the boy is uncontrollably crying as a result of the sting from the nettles

Loving relationships are presented in the two poems. The wife in 'The Manhunt' helps her husband
to come close to her again, whilst the father in 'Nettles' unhappily realises he can't protect his son
from life, no matter how hard he tries. Both poems use the same semantic fields. War and pain are
expressed in both poems. The words 'regiment', 'recruits', 'bullet', and 'parachute silk', all relate to
war whilst the words 'tender', 'blisters', 'blown...jaw', 'fractured...shoulder blade' and 'broken ribs' all
relate to pain. In both poems the relationships are both shown as being damaged by a war, whether it
be emotional or physical, which has destroyed the two relationships. In Conclusion, both poems
present vulnerability in relationships, not only is the person in pain vulnerable but the partner is
also, due to an uncontrollable desire to help. This has been shown through their partners account of
pain and through war

Benefits Of Turmeric Tea
Turmeric Tea
Turmeric is a popular spice in Asian countries, including India, where it is used as a coloring agent
in a variety of curries and soups. It is also a common ingredient in the Western world and large
amounts of it can be found in mustard, though not many people realize it. Turmeric has far–reaching
health benefits; unfortunately, they are often outweighed by the toxic ingredients with which the
spice is usually mixed. If you want to get the health benefits of turmeric without having to fill your
body with takeout curry or street hotdogs, turmeric tea is a good way to go.
Origin and Evolution –
The use of turmeric in food goes back literally thousands of years and can be traced to Southeast
Asia, where it was first used as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ceremonial brewing of oolong tea is referred to as "gongfucha" and can be quite a tedious affair,
seeing the leaves steeped multiple times before consumption is permitted.
Thankfully, you don't have to worry about following the exhausting rules of gongfucha at seven in
the morning, when you're bleary eyed and struggling to remain upright.
Oolong tea can be easily brewed by adding two teaspoons of tea for every 200 milliliters of water.
The water should not have reached boiling point, but should be a good 200 degrees Fahrenheit
before the leaves are added. The leaves should be steeped for ten minutes before drinking (maybe a
little less, depending on personal preference).
Acquiring teas from foreign countries can often prove a little pricy, but oolong tea is uniquely
economical. High–quality oolong tea leaves can be used and reused, surviving multiple brewings
without any loss of flavor. In fact, the taste of oolong leaves is said to improve as more brewings
occur, allowing you to use one collection of leaves four or five times before moving

Heaven's Gate: A Colossal Failure Essay
Throughout history, there have been many instances of cults, many of which share the common
characteristic of having corrupt leaders. For instance, Charles Manson led his cult in a homicidal
spree, and David Koresh and Jim Jones convinced their followers to commit mass suicide. It is
apparent that in cult history, leaders are the main cause of the tragedies that ensue. Heaven's Gate, a
religious cult, was founded on a mixture of Christian beliefs and a belief in UFOs. They stayed out
of the public eye for many years until March 27, 1997. On this day, thirty–nine members of the cult
committed suicide so that their souls could board a coming spaceship. This spaceship trip, however,

Nettles, met in 1972 when Applewhite was a patient in the hospital where Nettles worked (Stewart
par 1) After they discovered that they shared many of the same beliefs, they began to hold meetings
to attract followers. Applewhite and Nettles believed themselves to be "the two 'endtime' witnesses
mentioned in Revelation 11" ("Heaven's Gate" Britannica par 2). These witnesses are two
nonhuman beings who will appear on earth to prepare the way for the coming Lord. Applewhite
called himself the reincarnation of Jesus, and Nettles was the "Heavenly Father" (Stewart par 2).
These ideas stemmed from the duo's belief that they were from the "Next Level" (Stewart par 2) and
that only they had the ability to understand the Next Level. Because of this ability, their followers
had no choice but to be completely reliant upon and trust "The Two" ("Heaven's Gate" Britannica
par 2), as they were referred to. (This nickname goes back to the two witnesses described earlier
from Revelations 11 in the Bible.) The members of Heaven's Gate followed their leaders blindly.
When they joined this cult, according to Stewart in paragraph 3, they were told that the only way to
truly reach the Kingdom of Heaven was by giving up everything they had. As well as giving up

Informative Speech On Herbal Tea
Tea for pregnancy and breastfeeding
Herbal tea has been used for centuries to support women through their pregnancy journey. From
helping to strengthen and ready the body for labour to aiding women in managing those pesky
pregnancy–related conditions and complications; herbs have lots to offer. Herbal tea is in fact not
tea at all, real tea is the drink made from the leaves of the tea plant, and includes black and green tea
drinks. Herbal tea or more accurately herbal infusions are made from the leaves, roots, flowers,
bark, or berries of other types of plants. Plants contain fantastic healing properties and nutrients that
can be used to help support women throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Morning Sickness
Ginger based teas can help manage one of the most common pregnancy ailments. Fresh or dried
ginger infusions can provide rapid relief from mild to moderate nausea, and unlike anti–nausea
medications, ginger can be used several times a day.
Often more persistent cases of morning sickness can be due to stress on the liver from the increased
levels of circulating hormones. To help aid the liver in clearing these hormones and subsequently
reduce nausea, Dandelion Root tea can be used.
Reflux
As your baby grows the space left over for your organs begins to decrease, your stomach gets
pushed up your abdominal cavity and you may find that you start experience reflux or 'heartburn' in
the second and third trimesters of your pregnancy. Slippery Elm Bark, while isn't usually seen as a
tea is a traditional remedy that can ease reflux. Slippery Elm Bark can be purchased as a powder and
mixed with water, giving you a thick smoothie–like drink which coats the oesophagus and stomach
helping to reduce the burn of acid reflux.
Indigestion
The digestive system slows down during pregnancy causing some women to suffer from
indigestion, bloating and gas. An easy remedy for this is Peppermint tea, fresh or dried mint tea can
be used after meals to help relieve gas and bloating. Be aware that in later pregnancy Peppermint tea
may contribute to reflux as Peppermint can relax the sphincter between your oesophagus and
stomach, which normally prevents stomach acid from travelling back up and causing reflux. If

Stinging Nettle Research Paper
Stinging Nettle
Stinging nettle is a broad–leafed plant that can cause a hive–like rash and burning (urticarial) after
being touched. Hives are itchy, red, swollen areas of your skin.
This reaction is caused by hairs on the leaves of the stinging nettle plant. When you touch or make
contact with the plant, these tiny hairs break off and release acid into your skin. This causes a
chemical called histamine to be released by cells in your skin. Both of these chemicals are irritating
to your skin and can cause a rash.
In severe cases, the rash may be followed by swelling in other parts of your body, such as your eyes,
lips, tongue, throat, or hands.
CAUSES

DIAGNOSIS
Stinging nettle rash may be diagnosed by medical history and physical exam.
TREATMENT
Treatment may include medicines to help with the itching and rash (antihistamine). Severe cases
may require medicines called corticosteroids.
HOME CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Take medicines only as directed by your health care provider.
Do not wear tight–fitting clothes. This can irritate your skin.
Do not scratch or itch the rash.
Apply cold cloths (compresses) to the affected areas or take baths in cool water. This helps with
itching. Avoid hot baths and showers.
Apply calamine lotion or aloe vera as directed by your health care provider to the rash. This may
help with the itching.
Keep all follow–up visits as directed by your health care provider. This is important.
PREVENTION
Learn what stinging nettle looks like and avoid making contact with the plant.
If you have made contact with stinging nettle, wash the affected area with water as soon as you are
able.
Wear long pants, close toed shoes, and long–sleeved shirts if you are spending time outdoors in an

Poem Nettles
When analysing poems 'Netttles ' and 'born yesterday ', both are similar in how they show a parents
love and responsibility for a child. While 'Nettles ' highlights the anxieties that a parent has for their
child, the latter deals with the hopes a parent can wish upon their child. Both use various language
techniques and structure to convey how parents can have different ways of expressing their
relationship and love for a child.
Born yesterday depicts this love for a newborn baby, but this poem is written in a more hopeful,
unconventional manner. The first stanza of Born Yesterday highlights his views of what "the others*

It is also reminiscent of a sonnet, often a love poem. The love in this poem is of a father who is
trying to protect his son but who realises the futility of this. Every other line rhymes in this poem
which has the effect of making the poem seem more intense as the rhyme is not overly obvious. It is
also written in the first person which makes it seem so much more personal, "my son," "I saw" and
shows Scannal wanting to make the reader sympathies for the child. He reminds us in the last two
lines our lives are exposed to physical and negative pain.
This Ab Sb cd cd rhyme scheme pattern used throughout to possibly suggest how soldiers march in
complete sink and can maintain this synchronisation. The use of the iambic pentimeter adds tro this
structured effect as it uses a 10 syllable limit a line. Line 10 has an extra beat which shows the poets
anger at these nettles and really makes it stand out. The use of enjambment in the fourth, fifth and
sixth line shows a narrative style and brings out an overall theme of emotion with the use of
alliteration. This alliteration can be seen on the 6th line. The bold sound shows the pain that the
child is suffering with the term "tender skin" used as a contrast to the child 's vulnerability.
The word "bed" in the first line makes you think about what the nettles represent, and by using
words referring to the military, this can be seen by the extended metaphor. These military/army

Compare how poets use language to present feelings in "The Manhunt" and one other poem
(Nettles) In 'Manhunt', Simon Armitage uses rhyme to reflect the togetherness of a relationship. He
says "After the first phase, after passionate nights and intimate days." As the poem goes on, the
reader can start to recognise that the un–rhymed cuplets show how fragmented their relationship has
become. In 'Nettles' Vernon Scannell uses elements of nature, the nettles, to portray his keen anger
towards the pain his son is going through. At the beginning of the poem, Scannell uses soft 's'
sounds to emphasise the soothing of his injured son who has fallen in a nettle bed. The child is

"And climb the rungs of his broken ribs" This is an ambiguous phrase as some may take it
negatively, the way she is climbing his broken ribs adds a sense of pain. However, climbing from
the bottom of the ribs upwards is the way to the heart, indicating how she wants to mend their
broken relationship. War imagery and language dominate these two poems. Throughout each poem
there are numerous martial phrases indicating the poems themes and attitudes. In 'Nettles' the nettles
are described as a "regiment of spite", "green spears" and "no place for rest." Within the first three
lines, the nettles are portrayed negatively and it is clearly shown that they are somehow connected
to the war, perhaps an aggressive army of soldiers. This idea reflects the fathers need to protect his
child. In 'The Manhunt' the poem explores the costs of war on those who serve in it. Throughout this
poem it is clear to the reader that the husband is unable to connect with his wife, therefore their
relationship is affected. Simon Armitage allows the wife to speak of how hard it is to connect with
her husband. "Every nerve in his body had tightened and closed." This reflects how emotionally
traumatised he has become due to the war. To conclude my comparison between these two poems,
'The Manhunt' is mainly about the impact of war on a relationship whereas in Nettles, even though

Final Paper Happiness
In the book Happiness: The Science Behind Your Smile by Daniel Nettle he states that happiness
offers a remarkable portrait of feelings that poets, politicians, and philosophers all agree truly make
the world go around. Nettle is currently at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom and is the
Co–director of the center for behavioral and evolution. He mainly studies humans. Nettle is a
behavioral biologist that that has interest in evolution, development and psychological underpinning
of behavior. His study spans from biology into social science. He is a very successful writer who has
a BA in psychology and philosophy from Oxford, as well a PHD in biological anthropology from
university college London. Nettle goes through his book shedding light on happiness which is the
basic human desire. Studying the human happiness wasn't easy for Nettle but when he examined
human happiness he reached a conclusion that success can make us happy. People are fascinated by
the idea of happiness and will follow any system that seems to promise it. In the book Nettle goes in
depth over the three levels of happiness and what could happen if we don't reach or attempt to each
those certain levels. The first level is momentary happiness, second level describes judgment and
feelings, and the third and final level talking about the quality of life. In the first level Nettle
describes momentary feelings with joy and pleasure. We

Cramps, diarrhea, and wheezing can happen with a severe allergic reaction. DIAGNOSIS The
diagnosis of nettle rash is made easily by the history of coming in contact with stinging nettle. You
usually know about the contact immediately from symptoms produced by the plant. Your caregiver
will also know from the history given and by examining you. TREATMENT Mild cases can
generally be treated at home. In more severe cases, you should consult your caregiver. As soon as
you can find water, wash the exposed area. The discomfort generally goes away almost
immediately. You may use an over–the–counter antihistamine (diphenhydramine) for hives and
itching as needed. Do not drive or drink alcohol until medications used to treat the reaction have
worn off. Antihistamines tend to make people sleepy. Apply cold cloths (compresses) to the skin or
take baths in cool water. This will help itching. Avoid hot baths or showers. Heat will make the rash

Nettle On Smile
In ch.1 of Happiness: The Science Behind Your Smile, Daniel Nettle looks at the different ways that
happiness, as a concept, is understood. What did you find enlightening? Did anything in this chapter
surprise you? Did anything challenge your own thinking about the concept of happiness?
Happiness is a word that we often use without truly thinking about its meaning. After reading this
chapter one of the insight that I found intriguing is how different people look at happiness in a
different perspective. This chapter truly made me think about what happiness truly is about. We
often use the word without truly thinking of what it really means to be happy. Something that
surprised me is that we often see happiness as, " The most immediate and direct ... Show more

Now that you've read this chapter and thought about it, what do you think of his ideas?
In chapter two Nettle brought up some interesting ideas about whether people are happy or unhappy
and the reason behind this. We often think as happiness as a reachable emotion. We set our mind
that one we reach that point in our lives than that is when the most optimal happiness will be reach.
However, when we reach that goal things change and we are back to where we first started. In
chapter two he talks about National Child Development Study of March 1958. In this study all the
children's born within a certain period of time where followed along their lives and if they were able
to trace them back they will interviewed them and asked them about certain parts of their lives. The
results demonstrated that the majority of the participants felt satisfy about their lives. This might
have to do with the fact that people often might not be happy, but they rather suppress their
emotions because of how society might view this. On page 52 of the text Nettle states, "
unhappiness is not just unfortunate: it is unattractive in a potential mate, friend, or colleague." Since
people want to be like by their loved ones and society they often suppress their true emotion to
please others. He also mentions how we truly are never satisfy for a long time because we are afraid
that we might settle for less when in fact their is something

'Praise Song for my Mother' is not actually a poem, it is a praise son. Which in Guyana (where

commemorate and rejoice about a persons life. 'Nettles' is a story about a Scannells son who falls

In the final line of 'Harmonium' Armitage says 'Too starved of breath to make itself heard' which
means that Armitages' father is dying very quickly but neither of them want to talk about it. It shows
that this is the first time the subject has been brought up, and at this stage it is clear that Armitages'
dads death will be imminently soon. This can also be the shock and realisation of what is going to
happen in the near future. Throughout the poem it shows higher emotions, as the concept of death
gets drawn in even further than it has already, it's almost like that it's telling the story of his
childhood as both of them get progressively older. This is almost exactly the same as 'Praise Song'
as throughout the poem the words she uses in the stanzas are more powerful and have more depth to
them. When Grace Nichols says her mother was 'mantling' to her it could mean that her mother was
the core to her survival and well–being. On a secondary level, the core can also mean that her
mother was the core to her success and great life. She was the one who was always the heart and
sole of everyone as she was such a great person and cared for everyone. 'The flame tree's spread to
me' reflects the beautiful wildlife of Guyana, with the rainbow like colours. This shows that her
mother was happy, and full of life. This links in with 'Harmonium' when Armitage talks about 'The

Creative Story : A Short Story
"I hope you both choke," he muttered, before turning back and continuing his retreat, this time at a

still following him but it looked that their need to catch him had lessened somewhat.
Callum severely doubted that any of them would be able to see him now. The shadows from the
huge trees overhanging the wall which separated the alley and the town park obscured everything.
Just to be sure, Callum stopped once more and glanced over his shoulder. As predicted, the three
kids had slowed before finally stopping.
He nodded in grim satisfaction when the three turned as one then sloped back along the alley. "Yeah,
and don't come back again," he whispered. "You have no idea how close you lot came to ending up
in hospital." His words of relieved bravado went unheard, just how he liked it.
Callum climbed onto the top of the thick stone wall and dropped onto the other side, landing in a
thick patch of nettles. "Great," he muttered. "Thanks for that." Callum jumped out of the nettles and
sat in the damp grass, already knowing that some of those leaves had found the small tear just above
his knee. He wrapped his arms around his shaking legs.

In 'Nettles', after the accident with his son falling in the bed of nettles, the father "slashed in fury"
and acted quickly at the nettles to try and get rid of them to prevent his son from being hurt again.
However, the father knows that this attempt to get rid of the bed of nettles is pointless as the bed of
nettles will only grow back again in the future. This is understandable as it shows that every parent
wants to prevent their child from being hurt in any way possible, and will do anything to prevent it.
This also helps for the reader to become more involved with the poems, the characters and the
characters emotions and feelings and it helps for the reader to become more sympathetic towards the
characters. In 'The Manhunt', it talks about the effects of war and what happens to soldier's after war
on real people and their real relationships. The pain of emotion after war is often worse than pain
that is physical and this is backed up in 'Nettles', for example "unexploded mine", "buried deep in
his mind". The imagery of the mine sounds very dangerous and like it could go off any minute and
explode, and makes the poem more realistic and visual to the reader. It also shows the reader that the
mental state that the soldier is in right now is very unstable. In 'Nettles', Vernon Scannell writes

Transformation In Ian Mcewan's Atonement
The white porcelain of a bathtub keeps a naked body hidden from the view of others. In the same
way, the mind shelters those moments when one undergoes a transformation keeping them stowed
away. However, transformation escapes from its mental captivity through the very thing that a
bathtub hides: the body. It is through the reaction of the body that said transformation can be
witnessed uncensored. One's actions say more about the transformation than actually
acknowledging it outright. Although it seems one goes through a transformation in private, Ian
McEwan's novel Atonement suggests that this view is in fact false through the motif of bathing.
Rather, transformation occurs as a public action as opposed to a private one. Upon a first reading, ...

This revelation casts a new light onto the events of the book because they reflect the memory of
Briony rather than how they really happen. Also, Briony as the novelist has ultimate power over
what happens in the novel and she even describes that "she is also God" (350). With this power,
Briony can manipulate events so they can better convey her purpose. For example, the scene that
begins on page 73 where Robbie is taking a bath and ponders his relationship with Cecilia. His
thoughts are described as having "warmed the water" (73) from the energy released from his intense
contemplation. If Briony is the writer, she added this scene to show the transformation Robbie goes
through as he realizes his feelings for Cecilia. Briony has to assume that Robbie's mind was so full
of thoughts about the future that it could warm water. Additionally, Briony has to do the scene
justice as this is when Robbie realizes the love that Briony eventually gets in the way of. Therefore,
she gives Robbie this moment where he "stood up at last"(75) to show that he has finished his
thinking and that he realizes "that a great change was coming"(75). Saying that the change was
"coming" invokes this image of Robbie's changing feelings being like an oncoming storm that he
can no longer fight back. Briony uses this imagery to convey how deeply Robbie fell in love with
Cecilia to her reader. McEwan has

Is Home Grown Violent Extremism?
Home grown violent extremism, is a growing threat in today's society. In this short paper you will
learn of home grown extremist Gale Nettles, understand how home grown violent extremism are
still an active threat here in the US and also how fusion centers help in combat this form of
terrorism.
With radicalized individuals such as Timothy Mcveigh or Gale Nettles, home grown violent
extremist pose a threat that will always be prevalent and remain with no end or relief in sight. These
individuals or groups are very hard to detect. With the advent of the fusion centers across the nation,
this could be one part of the puzzle on how to combat this type of terrorism. The local law
enforcement could have the right piece of information that could help to detect where these types of
individuals will materialize. With ISIL and ISIS calling for western cultures to perpetrate more of
this type of attack, it is becoming ever more important to learn and detect these types of attacks
before they happen.
A prime example is the case involving home grown extremist Gale Nettles. Nettles was angry with
the US government over his incarceration due to counterfeiting. Wanting revenge, he planed to use a
larger fertilizer–based bomb, similar to the one used in the Oklahoma city bombing. His plan was to
blow up the federal courthouse in Chicago. After Nettles reveled his plan to a fellow inmate the
JTTF was notified and advised the FBI to keep and eye on him after he was released from prison.

Fear is something that is associated with someone who is...
Fear is something that is associated with someone who is scared of something and they do not want
to be near that thing that is to be feared. Fear is something that someone who is afraid of someone or
something. Fear can be presented by emotional pain and physical pain. Fear can also be portrayed in
irrational fear which could be someone making fun of you or rational fear which could be fear of
walking down an alley at night. Fear is displayed throughout all three poems but in different ways.
The poem Nettles shows the theme of fear by a father fearing for his son. The father feels angry and
wants revenge for his son so he goes and cuts all the nettles down. "I took my hook and honed the
blade and went outside and slashed in fury with it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
'My son aged three fell into the nettle bed' this implies that the child didn't just get stung for a
second but he fell into the nettles. This makes the reader feel sorry for the child as he is very young
and how much pain he would have went through. Also this makes the reader agree with the father to
slash the nettles down because the reader can understand what the father has been feeling.
'Bed seemed a curious name for those green spears' a metaphor is used here to describe the nettles as
green spears and this makes the audience think that nettles are dangerous and it gives the impression
that the nettles are weapons and the nettles will be damaging to his son. Nettles are described as
"green spears" this describes the nettles as extremely long and they must have been extremely sharp
as they are referred to spears and spears are mostly used as a weapon and something to hunt and kill
animals with.
The writer uses personification which is where a subject/object has a human trait assigned to it.
'That regiment of spite behind the shed' this is personification because the writer is referring the
nettles to an army regiment. This makes the nettles as the enemy and it also adds effect. The word
'regiment' is usually thought to be remembered with war and the writer uses war imagery. The writer
has fought in wars so he may have used war imagery to express his experiences.
'But in two weeks the busy sun and rain had

Title: JOINT PAIN HERBAL OIL Tagline: THE CARE OF NATURE TO THE JOINTS Summary:
The less walking efforts, low gaming activities, the sit and work life styles have evolved the
problem of knee or joint pain in various generations today. This problem which was only considered
for the elderly people is now being shifted to the chief wage earners too. It is all because of the facts
that count to less physical labour, excess use of escalator and lifts, no proper routine for exercise and
all. The joint pain also penetrates in the body due to the vanishing fluids in between the knee caps,
which enables the pain to generate because of the contraction or the moments. Here are some herbal
herbs which are formulated into herbal oils, whose applications on the area of interest diminish the
pain slowly and naturally. These may include: Nettles: this herb is well known for its ... Show more

inflammations and protects the body from the enzyme that is responsible for the inflammations, at
the same time. The glycyrrhizin is the active compound of this herb which helps in relieving the
inflammations in our body. Flax seed: the oil extracted for the flax seeds is also beneficial in treating
the conditions like the joint pains. This herbal oil is the excellent source of the omega 3, also famous
by the name ALA, which fight backs the inflammations that are being produced in our body. The
daily intake and application of this herbal oil also provides relief in diseases like irritable bowel
syndrome and strengthens the immune system of our body. Burdock: this herb secrets the oil that is
a rich source of the essential fatty acids along with some proportions of the sterols and tannins.
Therefore, the herbal oil contributes to the anti–inflammatory properties in our body. Thus, treating

Panera And Papa John's Case Summary
In the case of Panera, LLC. Vs. Michael Nettles and Papa Johns, Panera issued a complaint against
an employee of the Papa John's company for alleged misappropriation of trade secrets. Both
companies are based out of Delaware, Panera is stated with the notion that they "consider its
customer–facing technological innovations to be an integral part of its consumer appeal in a
competitive market" ("Recently Filed Cases", 2016). Panera is under the assumption that Papa
John's runs their company in a likeminded fashion, and therefore the hiring of Michael Nettles,
whom was the former VP of "Architecture in its information Technology department from July
2012–July 2016" ("Recently Filed Cases", 2016), puts him in a position to release sensitive
information that belongs to Panera. Within the complaint filed by Panera they claim, "Nettles

On August 15, 2016 there was information released regarding the decision of a federal judge that
stated, "a federal judge ordered Michael Nettles to discontinue working at the Louisville–based
pizza chain, also requiring Nettles to pay a $200,000 security bond" ("Recently Discovered Cases",
2016). This case was pretty clear in how it was going to be decided and I agree with how the federal
judge went about it. Michael was working a high executive position making decent money, we can
assume. Therefore, his decision making is irrational to say the least, after being directly instructed
by his former CEO to seek employment elsewhere, and personally signing a document stating that
employment by any competition was prohibited, leads me to believe he did not fully consider the
consequences for his action. Misappropriation of Trade Secrets is not something taken lightly in the
court room as you can see from this

Daniel Nettle's Happiness System
1. What is the happiness system and what is its purpose? In chapter two of Happiness: The science
behind your smile, Daniel Nettle describes and elaborates on the happiness system. The happiness
system entails a philosophy that motivates and encourages an individual to acquire perishable
objects and fervently seek circumstances that will ultimately lead to happiness. This system
promises to "be constantly scanning the horizon on the lookout for a better environment, a better
social network, a better mode of behaviour" (Nettle, 62). It is based on discovering new and better
opportunities for an individual in order to increase his or her happiness by, for instance, becoming
the CEO of a well–known company, obtaining a six–figure salary, or purchasing ... Show more

I believe the pleasure machine is an absurd and silly idea. Personally, I would not be willing to be
attached to the machine for six months regardless of the amount of money I would receive at the
conclusion of the experiment. The main reason why I would not participate in this experiment is
because the pleasure machine will only generate false and momentarily gratification. The pleasure
received through this machine will ultimately come to an end and one will realize that it was
fictitious pleasure. One can argue that everything that produces pleasure in this world is
momentarily, and I unquestionably agree. However, I prefer obtaining pleasure through real–life
experiences rather than depending on a machine to control the chemicals and signals in my brain to
produce such feeling. The pleasure machine eliminates the experience one must undergo to
encounter pleasure in one's life. Therefore, this machine fools the individual's mind and also
deprives him or her from the personal experience. I visit Six Flags often and love getting on all of
the roller–coasters because I enjoy the feeling it produces. I appreciate the excitement and pleasure
amusement parks produce in me. I am not willing to allow a machine produce the exact same
gratification I acquire from these environments because it robs me from the personal experience. If I

The Poem The Nettles Poem

  • 1. The Poem The Nettles Poem Nettles This poem is an account of the day the poet's son got stung when he fell into a bed of nettles and his reaction to that. It shows the poets paternal instincts and his sense of duty to protect his young son. This poem is a singular paragraph, flowing organically and its lack of punctuation and multiple run on sentences which show us that's it's the poets chain of thoughts. At the first glance, the poem seems simple, however as you analyze it many of its layers are uncovered. The title of this poem itself seems simple and direct. However, 'nettles' are the antagonist in this poem, and therefore by naming it the readers realize that the poet is focusing on the most important thing to him at that time, which are the nettles and how he wants to destroy them. More important are the lessons learnt than hardships the poet faced while eradicating them and also more important than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He sharpened his weapons and headed out to destroy the nettle bed. The poet's only focus at that time was completely eradicating the nettle bed, so he "slashed in fury with it", slowly releasing his anger, making the process cathartic. The poet continued his military metaphor and kept attacking the nettles until "not a nettle in that fierce parade stood upright", and then to destroy the nettle bed completely once and for all he "lit a funeral pyre to burn the fallen dead" yet again comparing these nettles to soldiers. Until now this entire battle between the poet and the nettle bed seemed entirely one sided and the readers were sure that the poet would emerge victorious, as there wasn't a single nettle left. Not only had the poet slashed them but he had burnt them too. However, just like the poet the reader too had underestimated the power of nature. The poet was arrogant to believe that he could destroy nature with his weapon, however, he forgot that nature was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Happiness System, By Daniel Nettle Happiness is something we as a human race value and treasure, but obtaining it and maintaining its presence in our lives can prove to be a difficult and exhausting task. Daniel Nettle writes that: "Most of us understand that the big issue in life is not being joyful, which is at best going to be an occasional perk, but being happy in the sense of generally satisfied overall (33)." Throughout his novel, Nettles explores the depths of happiness and what it means to experience it in all forms and aspects across generations and cultures, and how it helps develop us into the people that we are, and our success as a living species. The happiness system is designed to help us gain a better understanding of our core values, and to push us to continually strive to excel. Stagnancy is not beneficial to our relative fitness as a human race, and we must remain motivated by some force to avoid its grasp, as it has been proven over time to be a deadly mechanism of nature. Our "happiness" will be discovered as a result of not just what we choose to pursue in life, but how we choose to pursue it, and the fact we even chose to pursue it at all. Because happiness is in itself hard to define, psychologists have developed a scale of various levels of happiness to help describe it. But to understand the levels, one must first be introduced to the idea of "flow." As defined by Nettles, flow is a "state characterized by total absorption in a challenging activity for which the individual has the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Nettles Poetic Analysis 'Nettles' Poetic Analysis By Ashraf Mohamed The poem 'Nettles' was written by Vernon Scannell who has written this poem to portray a father–son relationship. Vernon Scannell has targeted this poem at parents, as they would be able to relate to the perspective and feelings of the speaker, since a parent is can understand what the poet is talking about. The poem talks about Scannell's war experiences, which gives it a darker meaning. The poem is written in iambic pentameter, which creates a da–dum pattern throughout the poem. The 'da' sound could almost represent the father trying to fight these "regiments of spite" to protect his son from the menacing world, whilst the 'dum' sound is more plosive and therefore symbolises the father ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a good example of hyperbole. He dramatizes the pain that the boy is feeling. Scannell uses military imagery, with nettles being referred to as a 'regiment' on 'parade' that return as 'tall recruits'. The pain created by 'raw', 'sharp wounds' and 'burn' deepens the juxtaposition of the child's physical injury, as well as the parent's emotional pain, which is somewhat contrasted by the language which presents the child as vulnerable and innocent. Overall, I think that that this poem explores the relationship of the father and the son in a way which Vernon Scannell can talk about his past experience in being in the war which gives the reader an opportunity to look at the poem from a different perspective. Scannell has written this poem in retrospect in the past and the poem itself, in its narrative tone, shows the reader two different stories that are symbolised into one poem. By Ashraf ... • 8. Nettles: Poetry and Son Nettles by Vernon Scannell The poem 'Nettles' by Vernon Scannell revolves around a father's perspective on an accident involving his son, through which the poet explores a father–son relationship, wherein the father tries to protect his son from the various difficulties in life. However, despite his efforts to shield his son from these problems, they will be a constant threat in life. The boy here is a metaphor for the army, with the nettles being an extended metaphor of recurring war. The combined effect of these metaphors throws light on the difficulties in life. The poet has crafted a title which aptly uses symbolism to depict the nettles as evil. A cursory reading of the poem portrays the protective instinct of a father for his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The poet uses personification by describing the nettles with the human quality of being 'fierce'. This makes them seem like the enemy's army which has been destroyed by the father. The poet ends the stanza using an enjambment to possibly show the continued struggles in his son's life, leading the readers to connect emotionally to the father's devotion to his son's happiness. The final stanza revolves around the nettles retorting to the father's attacks. In the first line, the father is shown to give the nettles a funeral. This shows the father ending the troubles caused by the nettles. With effective choice of words, the poet describes how the 'sun' and 'rain', representative of nature and its power, finally help the nettles grow. The word 'recruits' shows the enemy army was returning and regrouping. Furthermore, the word 'tall' depicts the nettles being stronger and healthier than before and their readiness for the battle. The final line states that the son would be hurt by the nettles soon and again. While problems won't wane with time, despite all of the father's efforts, the son will have to find a way to learn to adapt to the renewed struggles in his life. On a concluding note, while an individual may have multiple protectors, the lesson of independence is fundamental to life. Hurdles must be encountered and tackled to emerge with strength and power. Most historians use the more neutral term 'new religious movement' instead of the cult, because there is no one definition of cults, their number and membership cannot be accurately measured even today (Sarah Pike, 2016). New religious groups are regularly developed from another, more accepted religion. An example of this is Christianity, which first began as a cult extending from Judaism (Sarah Pike, 2016). While this was regularly the case, many cults did not begin as religious groups. A famous example of this is the movement called Synanon, which was originally organised to rehabilitate drug addicts, but then later changed into a commune and won legal recognition as a religion (Sarah Pike, 2016). A theory among UFO groups, there is a widespread belief that extraterrestrials have no vocal cords, an atrophied digestive system and no sexual organs (B.A. Robinson, 2009). Using far fewer words the film, just like the movie, brings the reader to the confusing and blurred line between reality and the perilous maelstrom that separates childhood from adulthood. Applewhite and Nettles believed themselves to be "the two 'endtime' witnesses mentioned in Revelation 11" ("Heaven's Gate" Britannica par 2). These witnesses are two nonhuman beings who will appear on earth to prepare the way for the coming Lord. • 24. Informative Speech On Herbal Tea Tea for pregnancy and breastfeeding Herbal tea has been used for centuries to support women through their pregnancy journey. From helping to strengthen and ready the body for labour to aiding women in managing those pesky pregnancy–related conditions and complications; herbs have lots to offer. Herbal tea is in fact not tea at all, real tea is the drink made from the leaves of the tea plant, and includes black and green tea drinks. Herbal tea or more accurately herbal infusions are made from the leaves, roots, flowers, bark, or berries of other types of plants. Plants contain fantastic healing properties and nutrients that can be used to help support women throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. Morning Sickness Ginger based teas can help manage one of the most common pregnancy ailments. Fresh or dried ginger infusions can provide rapid relief from mild to moderate nausea, and unlike anti–nausea medications, ginger can be used several times a day. Often more persistent cases of morning sickness can be due to stress on the liver from the increased levels of circulating hormones. To help aid the liver in clearing these hormones and subsequently reduce nausea, Dandelion Root tea can be used. Reflux As your baby grows the space left over for your organs begins to decrease, your stomach gets pushed up your abdominal cavity and you may find that you start experience reflux or 'heartburn' in the second and third trimesters of your pregnancy. Slippery Elm Bark, while isn't usually seen as a tea is a traditional remedy that can ease reflux. Slippery Elm Bark can be purchased as a powder and mixed with water, giving you a thick smoothie–like drink which coats the oesophagus and stomach helping to reduce the burn of acid reflux. Indigestion The digestive system slows down during pregnancy causing some women to suffer from indigestion, bloating and gas. An easy remedy for this is Peppermint tea, fresh or dried mint tea can be used after meals to help relieve gas and bloating. Be aware that in later pregnancy Peppermint tea

Hives are itchy, red, swollen areas of your skin. This reaction is caused by hairs on the leaves of the stinging nettle plant. When you touch or make contact with the plant, these tiny hairs break off and release acid into your skin. This causes a chemical called histamine to be released by cells in your skin. Both of these chemicals are irritating to your skin and can cause a rash. • 29. Poem Nettles When analysing poems 'Netttles ' and 'born yesterday ', both are similar in how they show a parents love and responsibility for a child. While 'Nettles ' highlights the anxieties that a parent has for their child, the latter deals with the hopes a parent can wish upon their child. Both use various language techniques and structure to convey how parents can have different ways of expressing their relationship and love for a child. Born yesterday depicts this love for a newborn baby, but this poem is written in a more hopeful, unconventional manner. The first stanza of Born Yesterday highlights his views of what "the others* ( seeming to mean most people) hope for in a newborn, which comes across as fairly sarcastic and almost as if he ... It is also written in the first person which makes it seem so much more personal, "my son," "I saw" and shows Scannal wanting to make the reader sympathies for the child. He reminds us in the last two lines our lives are exposed to physical and negative pain. The use of enjambment in the fourth, fifth and sixth line shows a narrative style and brings out an overall theme of emotion with the use of alliteration. This alliteration can be seen on the 6th line. The bold sound shows the pain that the child is suffering with the term "tender skin" used as a contrast to the child 's vulnerability. The word "bed" in the first line makes you think about what the nettles represent, and by using words referring to the military, this can be seen by the extended metaphor. These military/army ... Compare how poets use language to present feelings in "The Manhunt" and one other poem (Nettles) In 'Manhunt', Simon Armitage uses rhyme to reflect the togetherness of a relationship. He says "After the first phase, after passionate nights and intimate days." As the poem goes on, the reader can start to recognise that the un–rhymed cuplets show how fragmented their relationship has become. In 'Nettles' Vernon Scannell uses elements of nature, the nettles, to portray his keen anger towards the pain his son is going through. At the beginning of the poem, Scannell uses soft 's' sounds to emphasise the soothing of his injured son who has fallen in a nettle bed. The child is presented using emotive language. "And climb the rungs of his broken ribs" This is an ambiguous phrase as some may take it negatively, the way she is climbing his broken ribs adds a sense of pain. However, climbing from the bottom of the ribs upwards is the way to the heart, indicating how she wants to mend their broken relationship. War imagery and language dominate these two poems. Throughout each poem there are numerous martial phrases indicating the poems themes and attitudes. In 'Nettles' the nettles are described as a "regiment of spite", "green spears" and "no place for rest." Within the first three lines, the nettles are portrayed negatively and it is clearly shown that they are somehow connected to the war, perhaps an aggressive army of soldiers. This idea reflects the fathers need to protect his child. In 'The Manhunt' the poem explores the costs of war on those who serve in it. Throughout this poem it is clear to the reader that the husband is unable to connect with his wife, therefore their relationship is affected. Simon Armitage allows the wife to speak of how hard it is to connect with her husband. "Every nerve in his body had tightened and closed." This reflects how emotionally traumatised he has become due to the war. Did anything in this chapter surprise you? Did anything challenge your own thinking about the concept of happiness? Happiness is a word that we often use without truly thinking about its meaning. After reading this chapter one of the insight that I found intriguing is how different people look at happiness in a different perspective. Now that you've read this chapter and thought about it, what do you think of his ideas? In chapter two Nettle brought up some interesting ideas about whether people are happy or unhappy and the reason behind this. We often think as happiness as a reachable emotion. We set our mind that one we reach that point in our lives than that is when the most optimal happiness will be reach. However, when we reach that goal things change and we are back to where we first started. In chapter two he talks about National Child Development Study of March 1958. In this study all the children's born within a certain period of time where followed along their lives and if they were able to trace them back they will interviewed them and asked them about certain parts of their lives. The results demonstrated that the majority of the participants felt satisfy about their lives. This might have to do with the fact that people often might not be happy, but they rather suppress their emotions because of how society might view this. On page 52 of the text Nettle states, " unhappiness is not just unfortunate: it is unattractive in a potential mate, friend, or colleague." Since people want to be like by their loved ones and society they often suppress their true emotion to please others. In the final line of 'Harmonium' Armitage says 'Too starved of breath to make itself heard' which means that Armitages' father is dying very quickly but neither of them want to talk about it. It shows that this is the first time the subject has been brought up, and at this stage it is clear that Armitages' dads death will be imminently soon. This can also be the shock and realisation of what is going to happen in the near future. Throughout the poem it shows higher emotions, as the concept of death gets drawn in even further than it has already, it's almost like that it's telling the story of his childhood as both of them get progressively older. This is almost exactly the same as 'Praise Song' as throughout the poem the words she uses in the stanzas are more powerful and have more depth to them. When Grace Nichols says her mother was 'mantling' to her it could mean that her mother was the core to her survival and well–being. On a secondary level, the core can also mean that her mother was the core to her success and great life. She was the one who was always the heart and sole of everyone as she was such a great person and cared for everyone. Callum severely doubted that any of them would be able to see him now. The shadows from the huge trees overhanging the wall which separated the alley and the town park obscured everything. This is understandable as it shows that every parent wants to prevent their child from being hurt in any way possible, and will do anything to prevent it. This also helps for the reader to become more involved with the poems, the characters and the characters emotions and feelings and it helps for the reader to become more sympathetic towards the characters. In 'The Manhunt', it talks about the effects of war and what happens to soldier's after war on real people and their real relationships. The pain of emotion after war is often worse than pain that is physical and this is backed up in 'Nettles', for example "unexploded mine", "buried deep in his mind". The imagery of the mine sounds very dangerous and like it could go off any minute and explode, and makes the poem more realistic and visual to the reader. This revelation casts a new light onto the events of the book because they reflect the memory of Briony rather than how they really happen. Also, Briony as the novelist has ultimate power over what happens in the novel and she even describes that "she is also God" (350). With this power, Briony can manipulate events so they can better convey her purpose. For example, the scene that begins on page 73 where Robbie is taking a bath and ponders his relationship with Cecilia. His thoughts are described as having "warmed the water" (73) from the energy released from his intense contemplation. If Briony is the writer, she added this scene to show the transformation Robbie goes through as he realizes his feelings for Cecilia. Briony has to assume that Robbie's mind was so full of thoughts about the future that it could warm water. Additionally, Briony has to do the scene justice as this is when Robbie realizes the love that Briony eventually gets in the way of. Therefore, she gives Robbie this moment where he "stood up at last"(75) to show that he has finished his thinking and that he realizes "that a great change was coming"(75). Saying that the change was "coming" invokes this image of Robbie's changing feelings being like an oncoming storm that he can no longer fight back. With radicalized individuals such as Timothy Mcveigh or Gale Nettles, home grown violent extremist pose a threat that will always be prevalent and remain with no end or relief in sight.
