The University of Michigan Should NOT Use Affirmative Action
The University of Michigan Should NOT Use Affirmative Action
Imagine, your walking down the street looking for a job. You see a sign in the window that says, "Whites encouraged to apply." Imagine the period in
time when just being white got you into a college, without any other considerations of grades or athletic ability. Those were the days of the Jim Crow
laws. Now these instances have happened in the past 20 years, through new laws called Affirmative Action. The big argument is over these few years
of affirmative action. Have they alleviated the pain of the Jim Crow laws? The answer to that question is no. Especially, in the case of the University
of Michigan's use of Affirmative Action in the acceptance of students. Using race as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He believes that the University of Michigan's system of admission does use race as a preference. When Barbara Grutter applied to law school Cohen
saw that her chances of getting in were way below that of minorities. In an interview with Ed Bradley, Cohen shows the Law school admission records
from 1995 show these shocking statistics:
Here, 51 applications, one admit; 61 applications, one admit; 2 percent, 3 percent chance of getting in. Not easy. That was for Caucasian Americans.
That's their word language; not mine. This is their sheet. And they prepared another sheet for African–Americans. Same cells, same scores: 10
applicants, 10 admits; five applications, five admits. One hundred percent, instead of 2 percent opportunity, which is what the case is for whites. A
hundred percent for blacks. It––oh, come on. (Bradley)
In 1995, Cohen read an article pointing out that the acceptance rates of blacks at many major universities was higher than that of whites. So, he asked
the University of Michigan for information regarding these claims. The university told him that information was confidential. Cohen had to use the
Freedom of Information Act to get the documents he wanted. The documents he found were rather startling. They showed that the University of
Michigan was use race as a preference in admission to their college. The forms used by the university had a line at the top of the form that read "Use

Racial Harmony Week Essay example
Racial tension is one of the major issues in the U.S. today. Since many centuries ago, this has been an internal problem in this country and this has
caused racial strife and disunity among people. There are many who believe that racism is a thing of the past. However, racial tensions are still
rampant in this nation and many others. These kinds of problems affect all of us, especially the minorities. If the problems of racial discrimination and
tension are not being solved, minorities are likely to feel that they are treated differently. The crucial thing is not to overlook the different races and
cultures that are in the community, but to embrace our differences and have mutual respect among races in order to live in harmony. As... Show more

They are the ones that are educating the youth not only academically, but also mentally. It is necessary to note that some institutions already have some
activities and events in place that are devoted to acknowledging people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. One example of such events is
Michigan State University's Global Festival.
According to msu.edu, the Global Festival is a community event that draws together a crowd ranging from 4,000 to 5,000 visitors from the Lansing
and East Lansing community. This event celebrates both our diversity and the human experience that binds us together. On top of that, this event also
contributes significantly to the spirit of community that is so unique to MSU, through the joint efforts of MSU's nationality student groups and the
residents of the greater Lansing community ("Global"). This festival, which is being held every year by MSU, is free and is a huge success for the
university.
Although there are already events that make people understand the cultural and background of people from around the world, these kinds of events
tend to be held in the span of one day, which is insufficient for students to deeply immerse themselves in the understanding of other cultures.
Institutions and community centers in Michigan still need to organize more effective and efficient events that can remind people of the racial tensions
in the past and the negative results that came out

Should College Athletes Be Paid? Essay
Introduction
Should College Athletes Be Paid? This question has the propensity to cause much commotion within the various collegiate athletic divisions; e.g.,
NCAA, BIG 10, MEAC, and CIAA. The complexity involved in flushing out an answer to this question coupled with our status as college students
may have played a direct influence in the decision of the group Long Term Money's (L.T.M.) choice to use this topic as an interest for group
assignment. A "student athlete" is a participant in an organized competitive sport sponsored by the educational institution in which he or she is enrolled.
Student athletes must typically balance the roles of being a full–time student and a full–time athlete. Due to educational institutions being colleges, they
offer athletic scholarships in various sports; therefore, the proverbial question of which came first, "the chicken or the egg?" comes to mind. Are the
individuals who would be directly affected by such an action, considered students' firsts, or athletes, and if they are athletes, should be they be
considered employees governed by significant employment and labor laws eligible for pay? If they are now employee, how will this affect their
pursuit of the educational process, eligibility for scholarships, classes, study, etc.; what changes that must take place for the plan (if granted) to be
carried out, would it be consistent across the entire country. So, with so many unanswered questions, we ask again; "Should College Athletes Be

Social Media In The United States
The use of social media in the United States has dramatically expanded over the recent years thanks to many technological advances from a multitude
of intelligent men and women. While you may or may not be utilizing this technological boom, millions of Americans across the country have turned to
social media as an imperative aspect of their lives for communication in relationships. As positive as it may sound in terms of affecting relationships,
there are many people that argue that social media causes nothing but distress in an relationship. Alternatively, some argue against this statement and
some, like Kaveri Subrahmanyam, are right in between both statements.
In an interview done by The Prevention Researcher with Kaveri Subrahmanyam,–– ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Well, over three fourths of the responses agreed that in order to talk to other people they must use social media because in essence that's what the
majority of our generation depends on when we want to get into contact with one another. Therefore, how can you stop using something you use to
form relationships? Nonetheless then only a little above one fourth of people stated they believe social media enhances their relationships. The numbers
are everywhere, with little to no consistency; if a student thinks they use their phone too much, you expect them to just stop using their social media as
much, but then they aren't communicating with their friends like they enjoy. On the other hand, if they are communicating with their friends like they
want to and using their phones "too much" wouldn't you expect the percentage to be higher when asked if social media enhanced their relationships?
The numbers don't add up to any answer. Results proclaim at one point that social media has negative effects and then the next question it proclaims it
has positive effects. The argument can sway either way depending upon the person's, age, sex and demographics as a

Gaol Learning Experience
My three and a half months of working at the Huron County and Huron Historic Gaol have flown by. Time has gone far too quickly and I cannot
believe that my time here has come to a close. I am so grateful for the opportunity I was given to work at the museum and gaol this summer. It has
been a learning experience that I will never forget. I began working at the museum and gaol in May. The first month centred on familiarizing myself
with the two buildings and gaining and understanding as to how they function. I spent time learning about the history of both sites. I took place in an
orientation for about the first two weeks of work. The orientation was led by museum curator, Patricia Hamilton. I was guided through the Huron
County Museum, Huron Historic gaol and Sky Harbour Gallery with the help of Pat and the audio tour mates. Pat gave us students all of the basic
knowledge that we would need to know about the three sites in order to answer questions from tourists and the general public. I learned a lot about
each exhibit on display, as well as about the buildings themselves. The next part of orientation was performed by Jeremy, who have us a tutorial on
how to run the cash registers. He... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also at the gaol, I helped to open the loom room. I was taught by a volunteer how to weave. It seemed that in July I was constantly learning new and
interesting things about the museum and gaol. My interest in legal studies reached an all–time high throughout July as I read through records from the
gaol. I became extremely invested in the Steven Truscott case, and began researching information about that case and others like it, as well as the
gaol in general outside of work hours. My interest in the history of Huron County was reignited as well. Throughout July, I increased my overall
awareness of the county in which I grew up

Statement of Purpose as a Researcher in the Field of Power...
"The true method of knowledge is experiment."– said by a famous English poet William Blake. I, Sakil Ahmed Chowdhury could not agree more with
this quote. Thus my ultimate goal to become a prominent researcher in the field of "Power Systems" makes Michigan Technological University my
first choice for graduate studies as it provides incredible research prospects to all the students. The presence of copious exceptional faculty members
in the field of Electric Power Systems with research interests allied with my own provides an added impulse to apply at MTU.
My academic career has always propelled me, in the sense that each time I accomplished an academic excellence I was induced to go for another. After

When I studied power electronic circuits such as: ac to dc uncontrolled and controlled rectifiers, voltage controllers, converters, dc to ac inverters
and power supplies, I decided to build my career on "Power Systems and Power Electronics" which prompted me to take more core courses and lab
works in electrical and electronics filed such as Control Engineering, Digital Signal Processing, Advanced Electronics and Communications. I also
took several courses on: Electromagnetic (ETE 361), Semiconductors (ETE 411) and VLSI Design (CSE 435) to achieve a comprehensive
knowledge over my aspired field. Today an electrical engineer needs to be conversant both at software and hardware levels. So I took programming
language courses on C, Java and Database management with projects. Profuse availability of research works and projects in my desired fields in
Michigan Technological University is the foremost reason to apply in this institution.
As one of the greatest American inventors Charles F. Kettering said, "There is a great difference between knowing and understanding: you can know a
lot about something and not really understand it". I realized that the knowledge I acquired from undergraduate studies was only a small part of the
entire Electrical and Electronic Engineering and I have to go a long way for

Name, Legal Citation, and Level of Court Gratz Et Al. V. Bollinger Et Al., 539 US 244 (2003). The case was originally heard in the Federal District
Court, and finally decided in the Rehnquist Court.
Case Brief (3,4,5) Petitioner, Jennifer Gratz, who is Caucasian Michigan resident, applied for admission for the fall 1995 semester, to the University of
Michigan's College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) as residents of the State of Michigan. Gratz was told that, despite being very much
qualified, she was being denied admission because her application was not competitive enough on first review. A class action suit was filed against the
University because she felt that she was discriminated against valid racial and ethnic groups in violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the
Fourteenth Amendment and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
University of Michigan argued that because their school took such an interest in the educational benefits that ultimately resulted from having a racially

Ohio State And Michigan State
The Greatest Rivalry
Their first meeting, which was held in Ann Arbor, was 34–0. Michigan dominated Ohio State in their first couple meetings. "Carmen Ohio", Ohio State
alma mater, was wrote in 1902 on the way back from Ann Arbor after losing to Michigan 86–0. Ohio State better and better each year until they final
grew big enough to join the Big Ten in 1912. It is 1950, snow is coming down harder than ever and the wind is brutal but yet two teams are out on a
football field with a stadium full of Scarlet and Blue all around. Michigan vs Ohio State has long been the greatest rivalry in football. They fought
back and fourth, winning and losing, for over 100 years. But even through all the different coaches and players, through the fights and tears,
Michigan and Ohio State will always be the greatest tradition in football. This essay will be comparing Ohio State and Michigan throughout the
years, from winning streaks to greatest games and players. It'll also be reminiscing bowl games where it was 2 degree and a blizzarding down on
the players to bowl games and were very one sided. Ohio State has not always been better than Michigan but over the years they have fought back and
forth and Ohio State has slowly narrowed the hole and are coming back with fire in their eyes.

The State Of Michig A Fascinating Area
The state of Michigan is a fascinating area. From its mitten–like shape, to its historical background, to the presence of the Great Lakes, Michigan has a
story unlike any others. One very important part of Michigan's story is how water has shaped the land making up the state. Seeing as the Great Lakes
surround Michigan, it is obvious that the hydrologic system plays a great role in the water supply and the ecosystem of the Great Lakes. The hydrologic
cycle includes evaporation, condensation, precipitation, groundwater, transpiration and runoff, all of which keep the Great Lakes functioning year
after year. The University Corporation of Atmospheric Research developed an image to simply explain the hydrologic cycle as well as graphs
explaining how each of the elements of the hydrologic cycle affects The Great Lakes on a monthly basis (located below).
The hydrologic cycle keeps the Great Lakes up and running. Without it, Michigan would not have the inhabitants it does today. The abundant
supply of water allows a vast array of wildlife to live in Michigan, and made it a desirable place for early settlers to inhabit. However, the Great Lakes
did not just appear out of thin air. There is a long history of how the Great Lakes came to be.
The long history of the formation of the Great Lakes and Michigan start with the impact of glaciers. Throughout history, there have been four major
periods where glaciers moved across Michigan, shaping and forming the land. Every time a glacier

Compare And Contrast Duke University Vs Ohio State University
Duke University and The Ohio State University are two really unique colleges where I am thinking about attending. These colleges both have what I
am looking for in a University. Between these colleges, I think that the decision will be extremely tough. I love both schools' locations, students,
atmosphere, and competitiveness. These colleges have some similarities, but in many ways are complete opposites. Looking at all of the unique
characteristics of Duke and Ohio State, I believe that this will be a tough choice.
When I think of Duke University one word comes to mind, elitism. The total enrollment for undergraduates for this university is a little less than 7,000,
which is a medium–sized campus. This is one factor that makes Duke extremely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of my favorite things about this university is that it is incredibly involved in football. They also have a spectacular medical school that I could
attend after graduating. Ohio State is known for their medical school and also has many connections from doctors worldwide. This university is also
a lot closer to home so it would be easier for me as well. The Ohio State University is about two hours away, which is a perfect distance to experience
the full college life while still having the option to come home on the weekends. Ohio State is a lot cheaper than Duke as well. Their tuition is about
$25,000. Also on the subject of tuition, nearly forty five percent of students graduate with no debt. The university is ranked sixteenth best public
university in the nation and first in Ohio. Ohio State has an average ACT score of 28, not too off from mine. The university also has a perfect student
to teacher ratio that is 19:1. OSU is number seven in studying abroad programs. This is another one of my favorite things about this university because
I love traveling. Like Duke, Ohio State has many clubs and activities that students can get involved in. This may help when trying to make friends in

Abigail Fisher Case Summary
Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin Facts: Abigail Fisher (Plaintiff) is a Caucasian woman that was denied admission to the University of Texas at
Austin (UT – Austin) for the fall of 2008. Fisher did not graduate in the top ten percent of her class; therefore, she was not automatically accepted to
the University under the Top Ten Percent Plan. Instead, Fisher's application was evaluated under the Holistic Review Program. The Holistic Review
Program evaluates candidates based on their Personal Achievement Index, which looks at: (1) the mean score of candidates' application essays; and (2)
the candidates' Personal Achievement Score, which is calculated through a holistic review of the applicant's personal life, activities and leadership,
accolades, and mitigates "special circumstances, such as the applicant's socioeconomic status. . . and race." Issue: Does the University of Texas at
Austin's "race conscious" admissions process violate the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause, which says states cannot "deny to any
person in its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws"? (Amendment XIV) Interested Parties: Abigail N. Fisher (Plaintiff);... Show more content on

Fisher's weakest argument was that racial considerations were no longer necessary because the university had already achieved its critical mass; her
argument would have been stronger if she asked the school to explain the differences between critical mass and quota. The Defendants justified their
admissions process by arguing that their use of race was "narrowly tailored" to achieve a diverse student population, and their racial acknowledgement
is "not about quotas or targets, but about its focus upon individuals" (Fisher v. University of Texas). However, the school never explained the

Big Ten Game Of The Day Essay
This lopsided matchup earned "Big Ten Game of the Day" honors solely because of the showcase status that it brings. The Wisconsin/Rutgers game
is part of Big Ten Super Saturday , a showcase of Big Ten athletics that will take place at Madison Square Garden. After the 12:00 P.M basketball
game, there will be a Big Ten hockey game between Ohio State and Wisconsin. Although, the contest will count as a home game for Rutgers, you can
be sure that there will also be a good amount of Badgers fans in attendance. Especially, since Wisconsin athletics are the centerpiece of the special
event. Even though the Scarlet Knights earned their first conference win last week over Nebraska, it's safe to say that they're still out–manned by

Minnesota is way overdue. The mercurial Fighting Illini finally busted out of their three game losing streak in their last conference game. Playing at
home against Iowa, Illinois took a 40–24 lead into halftime and never looked back. On the other hand, the Nittany Lions are in the midst of their own
three–game skid. Although, Penn State's losing streak had come against elite Big Ten teams, they have been beaten down handily. In their last two
losses, on the road to Purdue and Wisconsin, the Nittany Lions have lost by a combined 52 points. This game will come down to experience, the
Nittany Lions are extremely young and have never dealt with the Big Ten roller coaster. At this point in the season, I trust the Fighting Illini to take
care of business more than I trust Penn State. Illinois has several mature players and still has a chance to make the NCAA Tournament. With Iowa on
a three game losing streak, this line was a little surprising. It's fairly obvious that the Buckeyes are playing much better lately, winning three out of four.
In fact, their only loss in that stretch was to Northwestern and it was by two

Essay Affirmative Action within Universities
Since the election of President Barack Obama, many people have adopted the idea that the nation has progressed and there are even some people who
trust that it is now time to halt school, housing, and employment affirmative action policies. Sadly though, many people are unaware of the fact that
there has been an upsurge in hate crimes and racial profiling. Because of this, there is a chasm between black and white success in schools, career
prospects, housing, and quality of health care (Sadler 1140–1141). But in recent years, affirmative action has been questioned. Michigan, Washington,
California and Florida have outlawed affirmative action policies, and Colorado and Nebraska have pushed for anti–affirmative efforts (Sadler 1156). ...

Evidently, it is in the best interest of policy makers and Universities to ponder ways to enrich diversity and exemplify a sense of equality; however,
certain techniques that attempt to establish these characteristics are continually debated, such as affirmative action. Some people believe that diversity
is nearly the same as a quota, and that "the fact is that it's hard to see any practical difference between 'diversity' in practice and patently illegal race
norming–putting minorities in a separate pool, judging them only against other members of the pool, and accepting a certain (even if indeterminate)
number of them" (Clegg 379). Besides, one study conducted by the Inside HigherEd foundation, discovered that although it has been outlawed sine the
1978 Bakke decision, it is still "quite common at elite, selective institutions for minority applicants not to compete for admission against the larger
applicant pool. Instead, they may compete only among those...within the same group" (Clegg 382).
Professor Gutierrez of the University of Chicago responds to the notion that many colleges and universities are rejecting low income and minority
students who are fully qualified by saying that "Barack Obama's presidential election may have convinced some Americans that they're living in a
post–racial society, but societal disparities persist between racial groups and are accentuated in American higher

How Did Theodore Roethke Write Poetry
Curiosity. Determination. Motive. All of these help one move along to the next step, whether it is something simple or difficult. If no effort was put
into something, then the outcome will not be as great as one wants. However, Theodore Roethke had many inspirations around him that encouraged
him to write poetry. Theodore was inspired by his mental illness, the Romantic era, and nature.
Theodore Huebner Roethke was born on May 25, 1908 in Saginaw, Michigan. He had a small family of a brother named Charles and his parents. Otto
illRoethke, his father, owned a greenhouse that consisted of several buildings (Chavkin, Allan). Theodore spent a lot of his time working in the

He spent most of his time in his father's greenhouse, taking in all of the beautiful features. As he spent his time viewing his surroundings, he decided
that he could use nature as an aspect of his poetry. Not only did he use nature as imagery in his poems but also an emotional outlet (Chavkin, Allan).
One of Theodore's poems, in detail, identifies events that happened as a child, especially in the greenhouse. In "Infirmity", Theodore writes, "Deep in
the greens of
Theodore Roethke and his father's greenhouse (Posts from September 2015 on The Line Break) summer sing the lives/I've come to love. A vireo

Inspiration is the key to success. The things that inspire people lend a helping hand to them and their ideas or work. Once they are started they end up
becoming successful. In this case, Theodore Roethke had many inspirations and is a well–known American poet. His inspirations included his mental

Case Summary : Grutter V. Bollinger
Case Summary: Grutter v. Bollinger, 539 U.S. 306 (2003) involved a white Michigan resident named Barbara Grutter and the University of Michigan
Law School. Grutter was frustrated by her rejection from the Law School, claiming that the University's decision was due to a discriminatory admission
policy which sought to enroll greater amounts of underrepresented minority students. Grutter believed that white candidates possessed a disadvantage
due to this policy and she sued the university. According to Grutter, race was the "predominate factor" in selecting applicants instead of academics. She
argued that the policy was unconstitutional and that it violated her 14th Amendment rights.
In response to the allegations, the University of Michigan asserted that their policy was designed to promote diversity and ensure "unique contributions
to the character of the Law School" (Cornell University Law School, n.d.). The University of Michigan maintained that they did not employ racial
quotas rather they systemically focused on improving diversity in each entering class. The University associated their policy to Regents of Uni. Cal. v.
Bakke (1978) which addressed race in university admission decisions.
Legal Question: The legal issue presented in this case ultimately questioned the University of Michigan's admission policy which sought a more diverse
student body. The court addressed whether the University of Michigan's use of racial preferences in the admission process violated

Michigan University Of Michigan Football Team
The title says it all. The University of Michigan Football Team has been transformed into a monster from the start of the Harbaugh Era. Before Jim
Harbaugh took over as head coach Michigan suffered a devastating 5–7 season and missed a bowl game under Brady Hoke. The team is now on the up
rise. Even though the statement may offend some, it is true. There are those critics that firmly disagree because of the big plays the defense sometimes
allows, an inexperienced quarterback and weak schedule. Despite their few flaws, Michigan has a championship caliber team capable of monumental
wins because of their; prodigious coaching staff, unmatched defensive line, a developing quarterback, improved offense, and the man himself, Jabrill

The staff combines to have an impressive thirty– two years of experience in the NFL. (Kenyon 1). Many coaches have also worked with head coach
Harbaugh in his past coaching gigs, which includes his own son. Michigan has a plethora of notable names to their coaches' roster. Names like Jedd
Fisch, Tyrone Wheatley, Jay Harbaugh, Michael Zordich, Brian Smith and new coach Don Brown to name a few. Brown coached the number one
defense in the nation last year at Boston College. He along with the other remarkable coaches has put together a defense that is unmatched anywhere in
the nation. The Michigan defense so far this year has been nothing short of superb. In their first six games, the defense only allowed two rushing
touchdowns and less than one–hundred total rushing yards a game. (Brouwer 1). Outstanding. As sports reviewer Chris Peterson proclaims in his

of the main reasons why the team is national championship worthy. Another area that the team is working on is developing their fresh quarterback.

The Law Of Admissions Standards
It's impossible to prophesy on what types of cases will arise. And it's doubtful that anyone could have predicted the issues that would come with
university admissions standards. Because lets be honest, no school wants to be viewed as the dunderhead who rejected the next Shakespeare or
Aristotle. Many factors can play a role: GPA, SAT scores, extracurricular activities, and other academically related aspects, are always going to be taken
into consideration. But there's one other factor–it's the one hairy, delicate topic that people tiptoe around–and that's the race factor. Everyone cringes
when the word "race" begins floating around.
So, the Supreme Court gave universities a blueprint for creating admissions standards: Grutter v Bollinger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But without a doubt, universities have a rational basis for excluding some students while rejecting others. A university does not have the means to
accept every single person that applies; it's just not feasible. Therefore, they can create guidelines for granting a student admission. For example,
examining GPA, standardized test scores, organizational involvement, community service hours, and the like, are ways that universities can accept or
deny students. Not only is this rational, but it's also necessary to ensure a universities success.
On the other hand, strict–scrutiny is a far more nitpicky. If a university implements standards that use race as a factor, then it calls for "for the most
exacting judicial scrutiny" (Bakke, 438 U.S. 265 (1978). Grutter and Fisher dealt with this precise question: Does using race as a factor in university
admissions violate the Equal Protection Clause? In exact situations, it does not. If the admissions provisions are of the narrowly tailoring construct, it is
permissible. Now let us turn to examining the nuances of Grutter and Fisher.
Beneath the watchful eye of strict scrutiny, the burden lies on the state, or in this case the university, to prove they have a compelling interest in having
racial classifications. For universities, the compelling interest is cultivating a diverse student environment. And according to Chief

Art In Art, Art And The Art Of Art
Drawing is not an activity, but a piece of me that I could never let go of. Drawing has transformed itself from a fun hobby into an essential form of
expression. It has transformed the way I look at things; nothing is mundane in art. A tree, for example, is a beautiful thing. Every single tree is unique,
with its own bark texture, its own arrangement of branches, and its own color. The limit only gets pushed further when the tree inherits the personality
of its artistic creator. Whenever I feel emotionally connected to something, I generally have an impulse to draw it, which strengthens the connection.
Both the result and the process are rewarding; it is always possible to improve, challenge, and discuss with other artists. There aren't always "right"
ways to draw things, which allows illustration to evolve throughout time. One room: a dancing lion, a painting cat, and a programming dragon. A
normal scene for those in the furry community, found at conventions around the world. The furry community is a network comprised largely of artists
and engineers, all joined by their interest in artistic media and anthropomorphic animals. Fursuits, which are very similar to mascot costumes, garner
the most attention in public media; however, there are many illustrators, writers, programmers, and musicians creating furry media. All of them are
essential to the continued existence of the community. Many furries have anthropomorphized characters based on themselves called fursonas.

College Admissions Case Paper
The University of Texas at Austin have high expectations in diverse and social goals involving, "ending stereotypes, promoting 'cross–racial
understanding,' preparing students for an 'increasingly diverse workforce and society" (Case Document, 2016, p.3). His case challenged the
undergraduate admissions system of University of Texas in Austin on their factors involved in the admission programs. The University of Texas has
admissions programs that review factors such as race, background, test scores etc. The admission programs first looks at the student's test scores and

Since race has been allowed to be a factor in decision making for admittance into the school, admissions in minorities has increased due to the favor on
diversity. Abigail Fisher (a caucasian female) applied for UT in 2003, but was denied admittance into the university. She filed a lawsuit against the
University of Texas at Austin claiming that she was not admitted because of her race which violates the Equal Protection Clause. Nikole Hanna– Jones
speaks on how Fisher felt wrongfully denied her admittance in the university. In her article What Abigail Fisher's Affirmative Action Case Was
Really About "But she was cheated, they say, her dream snatched away by university that closed its doors to her because she had been born the

understandable. Her denial of admittance brought light into the subject for not only UT, but for other universities in how their decision making
processes can affect students personally by lowering their self–esteem and it also diminishes a university

Successful Writing Center
Writing centers are peer run facilities where students can come to receive assistance with any writing assignment. At our school's writing center, peer
tutors revise papers in any stage of the writing process and "make better writers not just better papers". Schools and universities alike have similar
centers where people can come to advance their skill set. Similar to Berlin High School, universities use writing centers to help their students advance
their writing. Colleges such as the University of Connecticut, the University of Rhode Island, and Michigan State University all have various techniques
that could be applied to our writing center. Overall, from my research I have found that there are many different approaches to writing centers ... Show

for both the students and writing center. At Berlin High School, presentations could be achieved through advisory. Tutors could deliver a presentation
to increase awareness about the writing center during the advisory period one day. Additionally in advisory, students could discuss how they could
integrate technology into the writing center or how to bring more awareness to the center as a whole. This would be a collaborative effort for students

Perpose Of Statement Of Purpose In Mechanical Engineering
Statement of Purpose
Mechanical Engineering has not only given us inventions such as the car that have improved our lives but also captured the imagination of the world
through space travel and the Apollo missions. To achieve breakthrough in technology, we will always need great mentors, state–of–art infrastructure
and real motivation and Michigan Technological Universityis one of them. My four year academic curriculum in Mechanical Engineering at Pune
University has offered me the perfect blend of theoretical subjects and laboratory work. These academic years help to build solid foundation in the
field and made me keen to learn Applied Mechanics, Finite Element method, Design and manufacturing as part of my graduate syllabi. This career
planning would help me to achieve my goal to be a part of Mechanical Engineering fraternity. Thus, after intensive personal exploration, I have

The Helmet Law And Public Health Implications Of The Bill
In 2013, motorcycle helmet use in Michigan dropped to a record low approaching 73%, falling from 98% compliance just years earlier
("smarter–usa.org"). This drop can be attributed to the 2012 bill passed by Governor Rick Snyder, which declares certain qualified motorcyclists
exempt from the previous mandatory compliance law ("smarter–usa.org"). The repercussions of this bill including effects on long term state supported
medical care, organ donation, and increased insurance premiums pose a major public health issue (Satkoske, 2013). While motorcyclists claim their
right to individual freedom of choice, the opposition expresses the concern that riding without a helmet is not only dangerous for riders, but also for the
state of Michigan. This paper examines Michigan's controversial optional helmet law, assessing arguments in favor of and against the bill. The need for
state government involvement and the public health implications of the bill will also be discussed. Ultimately, the optional helmet law grants personal
liberty, but also has created many arguments over the implications on public health.
The State of Michigan motorcycle helmet law passed in 2012 as an amendment to Act 300, which mandated all motorcyclists wear an approved helmet
while operating their vehicle (Johnson, n.d.). The amendment specifies that if a rider is 21 years old, carries 20,000 dollars in first–party medical
benefits, and has had motorcycle endorsement for at least two years or passed an

Coach Thad Matta Research Paper
The Ohio State men's basketball team has had back–to–back disappointing seasons and most people believe that head Coach Thad Matta should be
fired from his job. Ohio State is a program that over the last ten years has been accustomed to winning games and being at the top of the Big Ten
standings, and the last two years under coach Matta were not up to most fans standards. I believe that Thad Matta should not be fired and that he will
turn the program around if given more time.
Thad Matta has been one of the most successful coaches in the country at his time at The Ohio State University. Comparing him to Michigan State's
head coach Tom Izzo, Thad Matta has a higher winning percentage, more regular season conference championships, and more conference tournament
championships in his coaching career, which is also five years shorter than Izzo's, according to sports–refernces.com. Then if you compare Matta to the
past Ohio State coaches he easily surfaces into the top pair. Coach Matta is the winningest coach in Ohio State history (Brown). When he was hired in

Personal Narrative: My Time At Michigan State University
My time at Michigan State University, so far, has been more than I could have hoped for. I've celebrated personal and academic victories. I've had the
opportunity to attend every home football game with the Spartan Marching Band. Attended a victorious B1G Ten Championship game. Attended the
Rose Bowl and Cotton Bowl and have more friends than any other time in my life. While sometimes it can be stressful to be a college
student–managing due dates, social events, working, and maintaining focus away from Facebook and my phone–having a major I'm actually interested
in, makes it all a lot easier. I have friends who, in my opinion, should not have the major they do. They hate all their classes, both pre–requisite and
their actual major classes. To me, it seems a little ridiculous to continue spending money and time on an education in something you clearly have no
interest in, not to mention planning for a career in the same field. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of My Papa's Waltz By Theodore Roethke
My Papa's Waltz, written by Theodore Roethke, is a poem about a child and his father. Theodore's poems are greatly influenced by his father's life and
his childhood experiences with him. His father died of cancer and his uncle committed suicide when he was only thirteen. Theodore was born in
Saginaw, Michigan, where most of his poems take place in his father's greenhouse. He attended the University of Michigan, Harvard, and taught at other
universities. Later he started his poetry residency at University of Washington in 1948. He won several prizes for many of his poems and books. In
My Papa's Waltz, Theodore Roethke writes about his father's illness and one of his most memorable last moments with him. Whiskey is the main focus
of the first stanza in this poem. It is made to seem as if it the father is a drunkard, because of how his breath is so strong that it "could make a small
boy dizzy," but the father is drinking for his illness. Whiskey is often referred to as a negative term or triggers the thought of abuse, but just because
a person drinks whiskey it does not mean they are a violent person. Whiskey can be used to cure or relieve colds and the father could be drinking to
relieve himself of the pain from his sickness, not knowing it is cancer he is dealing with. In the first stanza, third line the author mentions the word "
death" by saying "but I hung on like death," which can be seen as the boy is hanging on like death is hanging onto his father's life. The father

Descriptive Essay On A Game At A Volleyball Game
Michigan Tech Volleyball Game
The ball whipped through the air, echoing through the gym like the snap from a leather whip. Lauren, our libero, had served. I glanced at the flashing
scoreboard and winced at the score: 21–23. The other team had received the ball and were ready to set their outside hitter. Their hitter made a lightning
fast approach and the ball spun through the air over to our side, aimed right at me.
This was my first volleyball camp at Michigan Tech University this summer and I was ready. Coaches sorted us into teams, taught us some intermediate
skills revolving around the technique of the game, and scrimmaging from time to time. My team leader was Ali Gerring, a recent graduate from
Kingsford. We did bump–set–spike drills and six different rotations to get ready for our big scrimmage the next day. You could see the sweat
glistening on our faces, and smell the hard determination to improve. You could hear players call for the ball at every court yelling, "Mine, mine mine!"
At every practice there were different stations specializing in hitting (spiking), digging (bumping), and setting. We peppered with partners at some
stations and practiced serving at others. Our forearms were turning scarlet from digging so many balls and our necks started to ache after craning our
necks so many times setting the ball. We had to pick which position we wanted to play in the game and I picked outside hitter (player that spikes)
because I wanted to be the one that would

The Visual Reflection Of The Discoursee Community Of A...
The visual argumentation that I ended up creating was revising the information from my discourse community of a marching band paper and turning it
into an infographic. It consists of six components of a marching band that are named and briefly explained, as well as an image of an instrument found
in the marching band that correlates to that component. My visual argumentation shows the revision of my discourse paper, has stayed fairly similar to
what my design plan has dictated, and followed the principles given through the CRAP design principles.
Through the revision process of my design, I decided to only use some of Swale's components of a discourse community. My design details the
components of a marching band that are apparent while the band is performing because I felt that there were some discourse community components
that aren't as valuable for the audience to know to understand how a band works. I also chose this because the performance is the most important part
of a marching band, so the components understood should be the ones that are shown in a performance. This is also why I choose to include the
connection a marching band has with its audience as a component even though it isn't one of Swales' components of a discourse community. Having
been in a marching band myself I know that it is essential for the band to be able to connect with their audience during a performance so that their
audience is entertained and enjoying their music. I feel like the focusing on

The Case Of Grutter V. Bollinger
Thesis Statement
The case of Grutter V. Bollinger was based on a racial decision by the University of Michigan Law School denying Barbara Grutter entrance. She had

Introduction
This was a United States Supreme Court case, in where Barbara Grutter applied for the University of Michigan Law School and was denied. This

But the Court expects that after 25 years the use of ethnic preferences will not be necessary to interest the authorization if they accept the student or not.
After some time, the public universities and also the other public institutes, of higher education, across the Unites States were allowed to use race as
one of the factors defining if the student will be admitted or not. Any higher education should not be a governmental interest if the school should use
race as a source of having some kind of diversity in the schools. And if the program uses smart decisions to achieve that end, most likely the Court will
find the situation constitutional. Also the majority of decisions by Sandra O'Connor were to try to have the goal be the general society.
Two different people had problems with Bollinger, Gratz and also Grutter, with two different cases, and they affirmed and refined the position of the
Supreme Court by the affirmative action of a quarter century. The court also made clear that the action programs will be only constitutional if the
action programs consider race as one factor in a individual evaluation, but all this to have the "Class

I Was The Most Amazing Woman
I never thought I was the type of person to succeed, let alone thrive in college. That term is utilized loosely, but it seems fitting as I notice the
significant changes in myself that I had only used to dream about obtaining. It's difficult to discuss these changes without sounding pompous or
self–righteous, but I've come to find a great joy in reflecting on where I came from and where I stand today. I never expect to actually attend college
let alone fall in love with a university that gave me more than just an education. My mother had grown very sick and I was too scared to think
about moving away from her. The last five years were spent taking care of her and being there whenever she needed me. I felt like it was my job to
stay. She, however, had a different plan. Being the most amazing woman that my mother is, she wouldn't take no for an answer. For that I am
forever grateful. I found a lifetime organization that would change my life in countless ways, a passion for a career, and a love for myself. I ended up
creating a new chapter in a seemingly hopeless life story that I had the displeasure to call my own. The day I decided to apply to Eastern Michigan
University was the first step I made towards a happier existence. Eastern was the only college I applied to. I had the pleasure of attending swim
training at Eastern as a young competitive swimmer so campus didn't seem too intimidating. If I had to find a new place to try to call home, Eastern

The Causes And Effects Of Human Trafficking In Michigan
Human Trafficking in Michigan It is dark outside, and you are driving back home from work. Your stomach starts to growl from hunger, so you
decide to take the next exit to get something to eat. The town you stop at is a little creepy, but your hunger is unbearable. You pull into the parking
lot, and start walking to the door. You are immediately followed by two guys slightly larger than you. You start to walk faster, but unfortunately they
catch up and are now standing in front of you. You are scared because they are taking you back to their car. What is going to happen to you? Why are
there not more police patrolling this area at night? Why is this happening to me? Human trafficking can happen in a blink of an eye especially when
people are doing everyday things. According to The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services "it is known to be the second largest criminal
enterprise after drugs. There are many forms of trafficking such as human trafficking, sex trafficking, and labor trafficking." ("Human Trafficking")
Michigan has seen a sixteen percent increase in reported human trafficking cases. Polaris, an organization that helps fight human trafficking across
the globe, released the data from the National Human Trafficking Resource Center, stating that there were 152 Michigan Human Trafficking cases
reported in 2015. They included 122 of sex trafficking and 18 cases of labor trafficking. In 2014, 131 cases were reported were reported since 2007, the

Michigan is a bottom 10 state in education performance, according to one key recent measure. The state's fourth–graders fell to 41st from 38th in the

making some progress in improving education quality, Michigan is stagnant. And don't think the numbers are skewed by poor–performing urban school
districts – suburban students also lag behind, with just one–third of white fourth–graders hitting the proficient mark in reading. The latest confirmation
from the NAEP of the sorry state of Michigan's schools has a lot of folks talking about what it will take to push the state back into the top tier. The...

He's right – for some teachers. The very best instructors should have no cap on their earnings potential, and there should be a competitive market for
their talent. The problem with Karmanos' idea is that there's no provision for merit pay in Michigan, lousy teachers and great teachers make the
same as long as they have equal seniority and education. That's a recipe for mediocrity in any industry. Teacher quality won't significantly improve
until pay is linked directly to performance. There's also a strong Luddite strain in Michigan's education establishment. Technology is often seen not as
a tool to better convey information, but as a threat to teacher jobs. But if technology allows a district to make sure all of its students learn from its
very best teachers, it's a dereliction not to use it. More than anything, education reform in Michigan is held back by a lack of urgency, a state of denial
about just how terribly the schools are performing. Parents aren't screaming about those horrible NAEP scores. Michigan won't be a Top 10 education

Civil Rights Act: Diversity
Diversity in our country has been the center of attention for much of America's young life. Some Americans seem to value the virtue more than others;
however, the issue is one that the founding fathers stated that would help our country prosper. The constitution values the issue of diversity so much
so that it has centered several supreme court decisions around the issue. Today the Grutter versus Bollinger and Gratz verses Bollinger will be the
issue in which we look to judge whether the issue is one of definiteness. Before we can judge one way or another, we must first discuss both cases and
their rulings.
The first case that we will glimpse into is the case of Grutter versus Bolllinger. The case is centered around the idea of diversity in the form of race is
a justifiable factor in the admission to a state law school. Barbra Grutter argued that the University of Michigan Law School was breaking the Fourteenth
Amendment to the constitution as well as the Civil Rights Act. Grutter hassled with the fact the minority students with the same credentials assumed a
greater chance of admittance to the law school. Furthermore, the text goes on the explain one of the statement s manufactured by the prestigious law
school, "Effective participation by members of all racial ethnic groups in the civic life of our Nation is essential if the dream of one Nation,
indivisible, is to be realized." (Rosenbloom) The university was not shy in explaining their concerns in the admission process.

Figurative Language In The Secretary Chant, By Marrge Piercy
In the poem "The Secretary Chant," the poet, Marge Piercy, uses figurative language to develop the argument of how society has produced a
stereotype that women should be secretaries, because being a secretary is not always the ideal job because just like every other jobs, there may be
emotional conflicts. The way Piercy uses comprehensive imagery about the speaker's body and figurative language to depict a woman's perspective of
being a secretary interested me. Aftering reading the poem thoroughly, each imagery and figurative language conveys how women are stereotyped to
be secretaries and why it is not always the ultimate jobs for women. The poem "The Secretary Chant" uses imagery about the speaker's body parts to
develop the argument of how society has produced a stereotype that being a secretary is the perfect job for a women, but in reality being a secretary
might produce emotional conflicts. The reader can view this when the speaker states, "My navel is a reject button" (15). The speaker illustrates how
her belly button is a reject button. The purpose of using a metaphor in this quote is to explain how the speaker's body is being altered to inanimate
objects. The significance of the navel is that after detaching the umbilical cord after birth, the navel no longer has a biological purpose. This is vital
because perhaps the speaker feels useless, because the speaker knows her navel is ineffective. Since the speaker is working over time, she probably
feels like she

The University Of Michigan Should NOT Use Affirmative Action

  • 1. The University of Michigan Should NOT Use Affirmative Action The University of Michigan Should NOT Use Affirmative Action Imagine, your walking down the street looking for a job. You see a sign in the window that says, "Whites encouraged to apply." Imagine the period in time when just being white got you into a college, without any other considerations of grades or athletic ability. Those were the days of the Jim Crow laws. Now these instances have happened in the past 20 years, through new laws called Affirmative Action. The big argument is over these few years of affirmative action. Have they alleviated the pain of the Jim Crow laws? The answer to that question is no. Especially, in the case of the University of Michigan's use of Affirmative Action in the acceptance of students. Using race as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He believes that the University of Michigan's system of admission does use race as a preference. When Barbara Grutter applied to law school Cohen saw that her chances of getting in were way below that of minorities. In an interview with Ed Bradley, Cohen shows the Law school admission records from 1995 show these shocking statistics: Here, 51 applications, one admit; 61 applications, one admit; 2 percent, 3 percent chance of getting in. Not easy. That was for Caucasian Americans. That's their word language; not mine. This is their sheet. And they prepared another sheet for African–Americans. Same cells, same scores: 10 applicants, 10 admits; five applications, five admits. One hundred percent, instead of 2 percent opportunity, which is what the case is for whites. A hundred percent for blacks. It––oh, come on. (Bradley) In 1995, Cohen read an article pointing out that the acceptance rates of blacks at many major universities was higher than that of whites. So, he asked the University of Michigan for information regarding these claims. The university told him that information was confidential. Cohen had to use the Freedom of Information Act to get the documents he wanted. The documents he found were rather startling. They showed that the University of Michigan was use race as a preference in admission to their college. The forms used by the university had a line at the top of the form that read "Use top line for majority ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Racial Harmony Week Essay example Racial tension is one of the major issues in the U.S. today. Since many centuries ago, this has been an internal problem in this country and this has caused racial strife and disunity among people. There are many who believe that racism is a thing of the past. However, racial tensions are still rampant in this nation and many others. These kinds of problems affect all of us, especially the minorities. If the problems of racial discrimination and tension are not being solved, minorities are likely to feel that they are treated differently. The crucial thing is not to overlook the different races and cultures that are in the community, but to embrace our differences and have mutual respect among races in order to live in harmony. As... It is necessary to note that some institutions already have some activities and events in place that are devoted to acknowledging people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. One example of such events is Michigan State University's Global Festival. According to msu.edu, the Global Festival is a community event that draws together a crowd ranging from 4,000 to 5,000 visitors from the Lansing and East Lansing community. This event celebrates both our diversity and the human experience that binds us together. On top of that, this event also contributes significantly to the spirit of community that is so unique to MSU, through the joint efforts of MSU's nationality student groups and the residents of the greater Lansing community ("Global"). This festival, which is being held every year by MSU, is free and is a huge success for the university. Although there are already events that make people understand the cultural and background of people from around the world, these kinds of events tend to be held in the span of one day, which is insufficient for students to deeply immerse themselves in the understanding of other cultures. Institutions and community centers in Michigan still need to organize more effective and efficient events that can remind people of the racial tensions in the past and the negative results that came out ... • 3. Should College Athletes Be Paid? Essay Introduction Should College Athletes Be Paid? This question has the propensity to cause much commotion within the various collegiate athletic divisions; e.g., NCAA, BIG 10, MEAC, and CIAA. The complexity involved in flushing out an answer to this question coupled with our status as college students may have played a direct influence in the decision of the group Long Term Money's (L.T.M.) choice to use this topic as an interest for group assignment. A "student athlete" is a participant in an organized competitive sport sponsored by the educational institution in which he or she is enrolled. Student athletes must typically balance the roles of being a full–time student and a full–time athlete. Due to educational institutions being colleges, they offer athletic scholarships in various sports; therefore, the proverbial question of which came first, "the chicken or the egg?" comes to mind. Are the individuals who would be directly affected by such an action, considered students' firsts, or athletes, and if they are athletes, should be they be considered employees governed by significant employment and labor laws eligible for pay? If they are now employee, how will this affect their pursuit of the educational process, eligibility for scholarships, classes, study, etc.; what changes that must take place for the plan (if granted) to be carried out, would it be consistent across the entire country. So, with so many unanswered questions, we ask again; "Should College Athletes Be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While you may or may not be utilizing this technological boom, millions of Americans across the country have turned to social media as an imperative aspect of their lives for communication in relationships. As positive as it may sound in terms of affecting relationships, there are many people that argue that social media causes nothing but distress in an relationship. Well, over three fourths of the responses agreed that in order to talk to other people they must use social media because in essence that's what the majority of our generation depends on when we want to get into contact with one another. Therefore, how can you stop using something you use to form relationships? Nonetheless then only a little above one fourth of people stated they believe social media enhances their relationships. The numbers are everywhere, with little to no consistency; if a student thinks they use their phone too much, you expect them to just stop using their social media as much, but then they aren't communicating with their friends like they enjoy. On the other hand, if they are communicating with their friends like they want to and using their phones "too much" wouldn't you expect the percentage to be higher when asked if social media enhanced their relationships? • 5. Gaol Learning Experience My three and a half months of working at the Huron County and Huron Historic Gaol have flown by. Time has gone far too quickly and I cannot believe that my time here has come to a close. I am so grateful for the opportunity I was given to work at the museum and gaol this summer. It has been a learning experience that I will never forget. I began working at the museum and gaol in May. The first month centred on familiarizing myself with the two buildings and gaining and understanding as to how they function. I spent time learning about the history of both sites. I took place in an orientation for about the first two weeks of work. The orientation was led by museum curator, Patricia Hamilton. I was guided through the Huron County Museum, Huron Historic gaol and Sky Harbour Gallery with the help of Pat and the audio tour mates. Pat gave us students all of the basic knowledge that we would need to know about the three sites in order to answer questions from tourists and the general public. • 9. The State Of Michig A Fascinating Area The state of Michigan is a fascinating area. From its mitten–like shape, to its historical background, to the presence of the Great Lakes, Michigan has a story unlike any others. One very important part of Michigan's story is how water has shaped the land making up the state. Seeing as the Great Lakes surround Michigan, it is obvious that the hydrologic system plays a great role in the water supply and the ecosystem of the Great Lakes. The hydrologic cycle includes evaporation, condensation, precipitation, groundwater, transpiration and runoff, all of which keep the Great Lakes functioning year after year. The University Corporation of Atmospheric Research developed an image to simply explain the hydrologic cycle as well as graphs explaining how each of the elements of the hydrologic cycle affects The Great Lakes on a monthly basis (located below). The hydrologic cycle keeps the Great Lakes up and running. Without it, Michigan would not have the inhabitants it does today. The abundant supply of water allows a vast array of wildlife to live in Michigan, and made it a desirable place for early settlers to inhabit. However, the Great Lakes did not just appear out of thin air. There is a long history of how the Great Lakes came to be. The long history of the formation of the Great Lakes and Michigan start with the impact of glaciers. Throughout history, there have been four major periods where glaciers moved across Michigan, shaping and forming the land. Every time a glacier ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

University of Texas at Austin Facts: Abigail Fisher (Plaintiff) is a Caucasian woman that was denied admission to the University of Texas at Austin (UT – Austin) for the fall of 2008. Fisher did not graduate in the top ten percent of her class; therefore, she was not automatically accepted to the University under the Top Ten Percent Plan. Instead, Fisher's application was evaluated under the Holistic Review Program. The Holistic Review Program evaluates candidates based on their Personal Achievement Index, which looks at: (1) the mean score of candidates' application essays; and (2) the candidates' Personal Achievement Score, which is calculated through a holistic review of the applicant's personal life, activities and leadership, accolades, and mitigates "special circumstances, such as the applicant's socioeconomic status. . . and race." • 13. Essay Affirmative Action within Universities Since the election of President Barack Obama, many people have adopted the idea that the nation has progressed and there are even some people who trust that it is now time to halt school, housing, and employment affirmative action policies. Sadly though, many people are unaware of the fact that there has been an upsurge in hate crimes and racial profiling. Because of this, there is a chasm between black and white success in schools, career prospects, housing, and quality of health care (Sadler 1140–1141). But in recent years, affirmative action has been questioned. Michigan, Washington, California and Florida have outlawed affirmative action policies, and Colorado and Nebraska have pushed for anti–affirmative efforts (Sadler 1156). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Evidently, it is in the best interest of policy makers and Universities to ponder ways to enrich diversity and exemplify a sense of equality; however, certain techniques that attempt to establish these characteristics are continually debated, such as affirmative action. Some people believe that diversity is nearly the same as a quota, and that "the fact is that it's hard to see any practical difference between 'diversity' in practice and patently illegal race norming–putting minorities in a separate pool, judging them only against other members of the pool, and accepting a certain (even if indeterminate) number of them" (Clegg 379). Besides, one study conducted by the Inside HigherEd foundation, discovered that although it has been outlawed sine the 1978 Bakke decision, it is still "quite common at elite, selective institutions for minority applicants not to compete for admission against the larger applicant pool. Instead, they may compete only among those...within the same group" (Clegg 382). Professor Gutierrez of the University of Chicago responds to the notion that many colleges and universities are rejecting low income and minority students who are fully qualified by saying that "Barack Obama's presidential election may have convinced some Americans that they're living in a post–racial society, but societal disparities persist between racial groups and are accentuated in American higher ... Grutter was frustrated by her rejection from the Law School, claiming that the University's decision was due to a discriminatory admission policy which sought to enroll greater amounts of underrepresented minority students. Grutter believed that white candidates possessed a disadvantage due to this policy and she sued the university. According to Grutter, race was the "predominate factor" in selecting applicants instead of academics. She argued that the policy was unconstitutional and that it violated her 14th Amendment rights. In response to the allegations, the University of Michigan asserted that their policy was designed to promote diversity and ensure "unique contributions to the character of the Law School" (Cornell University Law School, n.d.). The University of Michigan maintained that they did not employ racial quotas rather they systemically focused on improving diversity in each entering class. The University associated their policy to Regents of Uni. Cal. v. Bakke (1978) which addressed race in university admission decisions. And it's doubtful that anyone could have predicted the issues that would come with university admissions standards. Because lets be honest, no school wants to be viewed as the dunderhead who rejected the next Shakespeare or Aristotle. Many factors can play a role: GPA, SAT scores, extracurricular activities, and other academically related aspects, are always going to be taken into consideration. But there's one other factor–it's the one hairy, delicate topic that people tiptoe around–and that's the race factor. Everyone cringes when the word "race" begins floating around. So, the Supreme Court gave universities a blueprint for creating admissions standards: Grutter v Bollinger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But without a doubt, universities have a rational basis for excluding some students while rejecting others. A university does not have the means to accept every single person that applies; it's just not feasible. Therefore, they can create guidelines for granting a student admission. For example, examining GPA, standardized test scores, organizational involvement, community service hours, and the like, are ways that universities can accept or deny students. Not only is this rational, but it's also necessary to ensure a universities success. On the other hand, strict–scrutiny is a far more nitpicky. If a university implements standards that use race as a factor, then it calls for "for the most exacting judicial scrutiny" (Bakke, 438 U.S. 265 (1978). Grutter and Fisher dealt with this precise question: Does using race as a factor in university admissions violate the Equal Protection Clause? In exact situations, it does not. If the admissions provisions are of the narrowly tailoring construct, it is permissible. Now let us turn to examining the nuances of Grutter and Fisher. Beneath the watchful eye of strict scrutiny, the burden lies on the state, or in this case the university, to prove they have a compelling interest in having racial classifications. For universities, the compelling interest is cultivating a diverse student environment. And according to Chief ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. Art In Art, Art And The Art Of Art Drawing is not an activity, but a piece of me that I could never let go of. Drawing has transformed itself from a fun hobby into an essential form of expression. It has transformed the way I look at things; nothing is mundane in art. A tree, for example, is a beautiful thing. Every single tree is unique, with its own bark texture, its own arrangement of branches, and its own color. The limit only gets pushed further when the tree inherits the personality of its artistic creator. Whenever I feel emotionally connected to something, I generally have an impulse to draw it, which strengthens the connection. Both the result and the process are rewarding; it is always possible to improve, challenge, and discuss with other artists. There aren't always "right" ways to draw things, which allows illustration to evolve throughout time. One room: a dancing lion, a painting cat, and a programming dragon. Fursuits, which are very similar to mascot costumes, garner the most attention in public media; however, there are many illustrators, writers, programmers, and musicians creating furry media. • 27. The Helmet Law And Public Health Implications Of The Bill In 2013, motorcycle helmet use in Michigan dropped to a record low approaching 73%, falling from 98% compliance just years earlier ("smarter–usa.org"). This drop can be attributed to the 2012 bill passed by Governor Rick Snyder, which declares certain qualified motorcyclists exempt from the previous mandatory compliance law ("smarter–usa.org"). The repercussions of this bill including effects on long term state supported medical care, organ donation, and increased insurance premiums pose a major public health issue (Satkoske, 2013). While motorcyclists claim their right to individual freedom of choice, the opposition expresses the concern that riding without a helmet is not only dangerous for riders, but also for the state of Michigan. This paper examines Michigan's controversial optional helmet law, assessing arguments in favor of and against the bill. The need for state government involvement and the public health implications of the bill will also be discussed. Ultimately, the optional helmet law grants personal liberty, but also has created many arguments over the implications on public health. The State of Michigan motorcycle helmet law passed in 2012 as an amendment to Act 300, which mandated all motorcyclists wear an approved helmet while operating their vehicle (Johnson, n.d.). • 30. Analysis Of My Papa's Waltz By Theodore Roethke My Papa's Waltz, written by Theodore Roethke, is a poem about a child and his father. Theodore's poems are greatly influenced by his father's life and his childhood experiences with him. His father died of cancer and his uncle committed suicide when he was only thirteen. Theodore was born in Saginaw, Michigan, where most of his poems take place in his father's greenhouse. He attended the University of Michigan, Harvard, and taught at other universities. Later he started his poetry residency at University of Washington in 1948. He won several prizes for many of his poems and books. In My Papa's Waltz, Theodore Roethke writes about his father's illness and one of his most memorable last moments with him. Whiskey is the main focus of the first stanza in this poem. It is made to seem as if it the father is a drunkard, because of how his breath is so strong that it "could make a small boy dizzy," but the father is drinking for his illness. Whiskey is often referred to as a negative term or triggers the thought of abuse, but just because a person drinks whiskey it does not mean they are a violent person. Whiskey can be used to cure or relieve colds and the father could be drinking to relieve himself of the pain from his sickness, not knowing it is cancer he is dealing with. In the first stanza, third line the author mentions the word " death" by saying "but I hung on like death," which can be seen as the boy is hanging on like death is hanging onto his father's life. Their hitter made a lightning fast approach and the ball spun through the air over to our side, aimed right at me. This was my first volleyball camp at Michigan Tech University this summer and I was ready. My team leader was Ali Gerring, a recent graduate from Kingsford. We did bump–set–spike drills and six different rotations to get ready for our big scrimmage the next day. You could see the sweat glistening on our faces, and smell the hard determination to improve. You could hear players call for the ball at every court yelling, "Mine, mine mine!" At every practice there were different stations specializing in hitting (spiking), digging (bumping), and setting. We peppered with partners at some stations and practiced serving at others. Our forearms were turning scarlet from digging so many balls and our necks started to ache after craning our necks so many times setting the ball. The visual argumentation that I ended up creating was revising the information from my discourse community of a marching band paper and turning it into an infographic. My visual argumentation shows the revision of my discourse paper, has stayed fairly similar to what my design plan has dictated, and followed the principles given through the CRAP design principles. Through the revision process of my design, I decided to only use some of Swale's components of a discourse community. My design details the components of a marching band that are apparent while the band is performing because I felt that there were some discourse community components that aren't as valuable for the audience to know to understand how a band works. I also chose this because the performance is the most important part of a marching band, so the components understood should be the ones that are shown in a performance. This is also why I choose to include the connection a marching band has with its audience as a component even though it isn't one of Swales' components of a discourse community. Figurative Language In The Secretary Chant, By Marrge Piercy In the poem "The Secretary Chant," the poet, Marge Piercy, uses figurative language to develop the argument of how society has produced a stereotype that women should be secretaries, because being a secretary is not always the ideal job because just like every other jobs, there may be emotional conflicts. The way Piercy uses comprehensive imagery about the speaker's body and figurative language to depict a woman's perspective of being a secretary interested me. Aftering reading the poem thoroughly, each imagery and figurative language conveys how women are stereotyped to be secretaries and why it is not always the ultimate jobs for women. The poem "The Secretary Chant" uses imagery about the speaker's body parts to develop the argument of how society has produced a stereotype that being a secretary is the perfect job for a women, but in reality being a secretary might produce emotional conflicts. The reader can view this when the speaker states, "My navel is a reject button" (15). The speaker illustrates how her belly button is a reject button. The purpose of using a metaphor in this quote is to explain how the speaker's body is being altered to inanimate objects. The significance of the navel is that after detaching the umbilical cord after birth, the navel no longer has a biological purpose.
