Replacing Kerosine based lighting with White LED through solar energy
1. Replacing Kerosine Based lighting systems
(hurricane, kupi) with the White LED
in Rural Area in Bangladesh.
Presented by
Sheikh Tofael Ahmed and Kazi Rabiul Islam
Bangladesh
2. Objectives:
The Best choices of Energy options for Lighting as
Function of Household Income in Rural
Bangladesh.
Best options of a technology that is simple,
affordable and sustainable.
The Best options of a technology that is technically
& financially viable.
“If you’re going to make a
difference, make it big and
make it bright!”
4. Solar Energy in Bangladesh:
Under the PV program of IDCOL,
about 2,50,000 systems
aggregating to over 14.5 MWp
have been installed as of 29
Sep’2008
Besides the IDCOL project there
are some Government & NGO’s
pilot projects, this includes-
1,000 solar lanterns
5000 home lighting systems
50 street lighting systems Diagram of SHS using radiation level
12 water pumping systems in Bangladesh is 5.2 KWh/m2/day (Avg.)
and of about 200 KWp aggregate
capacity of stand alone A/C power
plants.
6. Solar PV usages in Bangladesh
About 100 Million people out of
140 Million do not have
electricity.
42% of the total area only gets
electricity.
Roughly 30 million rural homes
do not have any thing other
than Kerosene light.
Governments solar lighting
does not reach even 0.2 % of
these population and when it
reaches does not work even
with the 10% of the 0.2%.
12. Kerosene used for lighting is----
Polluting the homes and posses
health hazards.
Does not help any productive
work by women, studies by
children.
Many times dangerous for
children and families.
Costly; present rate is -
1 liter=$0.85
14. Issues with the present system:
(other than LED based systems)
They use florescent lightening (tube lights or compact ones (CFL) lights which
consumes less electricity than the filament based incandescent (normal) bulbs
but still is considerable.
Since there are many storage batteries required the maintenance and their
replacement cost is very heavy.
The bulbs/ lights fail once in 6 months or so and require maintenance thus
complicating the usage in a small inaccessible village. Battery storage and
periodic maintenance are the main factor for the dysfunction of many of the
installed systems.
15. Breakthrough of the White LED:
In 1993, Dr. Shuji Nakamura a
scientist at the Nichia cooperation,
Japan invented Blue high bright
LED with the Indium Gallium nitride
material family
Following that Nakamura put a novel
phosphor over his blue chip to get a Dr Shuji Nakamura
white light
That lead to one of the greatest
inventions of the 20th Century:
Luminosity:
White LEDs, typically 20 to 60
Lumens/Watt or between 5000 & 12000
mille candles !
16. White LEDs, A New Way In Lighting !
White LEDs are 'Light Emitting
Diodes', a type of semiconductor.
They are the newest item in
today's lighting technology. Unlike
other light sources, these WHITE
LEDs can take a lot of punishment
from vibration, heat and severe
cold.
WHITE LEDs can be made
waterproof, and put into a lighting
package with 2 to 1000 WHITE
LEDs. They can be used for street
lights, sign lighting, spot lighting,
Home lights or anything else.
17. About White LEDs-----
White LEDs can be placed in abusive environments
White LEDs can be "AC" or "DC" powered depending
on the model.
White LEDs are the newest lighting device on the
market today.
White LEDs do not produce "RF" to interfere with
radio equipment.
White LEDs are a proven technology.
You’ll die but your
White LEDs last about 100, 000 hours of continuous LED will not die !
use.
White LEDs radiate light at a 15 to 45 degree angle
depending on the model.
White LEDs can be made completely waterproof for
use in many marine applications.
White LEDs are polarity protected, so it is hard to
make an installation mistake.

19. Impact on LED based Lighting Systems – The
Lesson Learnt from the Survey-------------
Type of Benefits Beneficiaries (100%)
Positive impact on children health 80
Positive impact on children’s performance in 80
school.
An increase in income by 30% 10
Listen to radio more than before 70
Improved indoor environment 100
The light bring security during the night 90
20. The Lighting System – description
Each battery is charged though a single (5-7) Wp solar panel
and usually charged in a single sunny day for (5-6) hrs/day basis for
all loads in continuous operation, considering 3 days of autonomy.
2 wall mounted along with one portable lighting arrangements
(Different models including Hurricane model) were used.
The battery requires no topping with water. As we use maintenance
free batteries that is also not needed for topping up the water in
every month.

22. Refined model of LED lights as per
field recommendations:
A light for 08 hrs a day and 365
days in an year (even in rains
and in winter)
Lasts up to 07 days of use with
a single charge
No need for take new light set;
existing kerosine set could be
modified with LED’s by a LED based Hurricane (Modified)
cheaper cost.
Bright enough to study, cook,
eat and carry out any task
Never fails and lasts up to 10
years (except battery)
Can be upgradable by
changing the light chip &
battery.
Traditional Kerosine based Hurricane
23. Environment friendly and reliable lighting for
homes and field use in Rural Bangladesh:
We need only Tk. 5,50,000 ($8000) for each village for
100 house hold to say ‘good bye’ for Kerosine.
Then we can save a big amount in a foreign currency a
year by Govt. (for only kerosene used for lighting)
24. Hope -------
Let us banish the kerosene from the
homes of poor people and provide them the
best possible light for minimum 10 hrs in
every 24 hours and 365 days in a year.
