3. Basics
โ Moving coil Microphone โ high frequency response is poor due to
mass of the diaphragm.
โ Mechanical mass is equivalent to inductance โ attenuates higher
frequency.
โ To increase frequency response โ light weight aluminum ribbon is
used in place of diaphragm and coil assembly.
โ Ribbon acts as a conductor (placed in a magnetic field) as well as a
diaphragm.

5. Elements
โ Magnet โ horse shoe magnet with extended pole pieces โ
provides strong magnetic field
โ Ribbon โ light aluminum foil โ corrugated at right angles to its
length to provide greater surface area
โ Main feature โ lightness of ribbon โ 0.2 mg โ a few microns
thick and about 3 mm wide
โ whole unit is enclosed in a circular or rectangular baffle

6. Working
โ Sound Pressure โ Ribbon (an electric conductor) placed in magnetic
field โ is made to move at right angles to magnetic field โ change in
magnetic flux through ribbon โ emf is induced across ribbon
โ emf is proportional to the rate of change of flux โ i.e. proportional
to sound waves striking the ribbon
โ Driving mechanical force is proportional to the difference of the
pressures acting on two sides of ribbon โ particle velocity of sound
waves โ โPressure Gradientโ or โ Velocityโ Microphone

8. Characteristics
โFrequency Response : mass is very small โ low mechanical
inductance โ results in good high frequency response up to 12000
Hz | stiffness of the suspension of ribbon is also small โ results in
good low frequency response | overall frequency response is 20 to
12000 Hz
โ Directivity : force of sound can be applied to the ribbon from the
front as well as from the rear side โ bi-directional โ Figure of Eight

9. Features
โ requires careful handling as ribbon is very light
โ DC current through ribbon from a battery of meter can strain the ribbon โ
resistance or continuity should not be measured with a meter
โ should not be blown into โ causes strain in ribbon โ sensitive to breathing
too โ kept at about 50 cm or more away from the source of sound
โ slightest wind causes rumble noise in the output
โ excellent transient response
โ does not need external bias
โ cost is high
