Q5 - How did you attract/address your audience?
Mise-en-scene The main model is wearing fashionable clothes with make up , a chain and a modern hairstyle. This represents her as a modern, stylish teenager. Other models are dressed quite casually. This represents them as young, “cool” like teenagers. I used some branding of costume and props like using Dr Dreheadphones, Dolce and Gabbanasunglasses and Era hats. My models also wore chains, rings and other jewellery. By using mise-en-scene, my audience could relate to it.
Mode of address All my models use a direct mode of address. When the model looks directly at the camera, it instantly makes the page look attractive and eye-catching. A lot of magazine covers use direct address as it makes the reader feel involved with the artists. By using a direct mode of address, the reader can see the facial expressions and can ‘read’ the artist.
Language I used a mix of both standard English and colloquialisms. This would catch the readers interest immediately as they notice that the copy is informal but trying to keep it completely away from informality. I used an emotive tone throughout the double page spread article to make it more realistic and attractive. I used intertextuality as well in some places of my article like at the beginning when I compared a traffic jam Orcs from the Lord of the Rings movies. I also used intertexttuality later on when I referred to a song of Elvis Presley’s.
Language continued… Intertextualityreminds readers of other media texts. I also used advertising language and terms like ‘Xclusiv’ (notice that it is spelt in short hand), ‘Win’ and ‘Free’ throughout my media products.
Competitions and Tie-ins As a tie in, I advertised on my front cover that the magazine were offering readers 10 free music downloads. I made this eye catching by highlighting the word ‘Free’ in a different colour. This would grab my audiences’ audience. For the competition, I offered readers the chance to win and iPod Touch. This gadget is strongly associated to music as Apple are a very well-known brand amongst music lovers. All this information was used from the questionnaire accordingly.
Colours I used a limited number of colours. Using too many colours may put off my audience as it may look like a children’s magazine. The colours that I used worked well together. The colours that I used were: Red Black Grey White
