the terrifying midgame collapse and hospitalization of Buffalo Billssafety Damar Hamlin, it’s
also confronting a rapidly evolving sports landscape in whichathletes’ mental health has
emerged as a crucial issue. The 24-year-old Hamlin was still in critical condition in the
intensive care of a Cincinnatihospital on Tuesday after making a tackle, standing up and
then crumbling to the groundduring Buffalo’s marquee game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Medical personnel appeared toperform CPR on him for several minutes before he was taken
to the hospital in an ambulance.He was in cardiac arrest, according to the team, and his
heartbeat was restored on-site. The dramatic scene involving Hamlin played out not just on
national television, but alsodirectly in front of players from both teams who watched a peer
receive emergency treatmentin a life-or-death situation, seconds after he had been doing
what every one of them also doesfor a living. Those on the field were visibly shaken by what
they saw, with some in tears. Playerson opposing teams embraced and Bills players
3. gathered, kneeling in a prayer circle. The NFL said Tuesday that the Bills-Bengals game,
which was stopped after the incident, willnot be played “this week.” The league didn’t
announce any changes to the schedule for Week 18,which is slated to begin Saturday. The
NFL must now reckon with the impact of this incident not just on Hamlin, but also hispeers.
Questions have been raised about when players—not just on the Bills and Bengals, but
allaround the league—might feel comfortable proceeding with the season. Some were on
the fieldand witnessed what happened first hand. Others could have seen it on television
and imaginedthemselves in their colleague’s shoes.

feel ready to play by this weekend havealready started, and some have expressed a desire to
have the games delayed.“That’s been a real conversation since last night and again this
morning and now into tonight,”said NFL agent David Canter on Tuesday. Such concerns
have rapidly risen in the consciousness of both the public and athletes in thepast two years.
Superstars including gymnast Simone Biles and tennis player Naomi Osaka havespoken
frankly about the ways in which their mental health has affected their ability toperform, as
well as the impact of performing on their mental health. As a result, sports officials are
increasingly being asked to treat athletes’ mental health on a parwith their physical well-
being. Troy Vincent, the NFL’s executive vice president of footballoperations, described
what happened Monday as “traumatic.”Dr. Scott Goldman, a psychologist who works with
professional sports teams, said the problemis particularly tricky because different people
cope with trauma in different fashions. What’sbest for one player might not be optimal for
another. Some, he said, might not be able to fathom playing when a fellow player is in a dire
situation. Toothers, though, football may be a sanctuary and a distraction they can turn to. “I
think this is going to be a really complicated thing for the individuals to navigate,
theorganizations to navigate and the league to navigate,” said Goldman, who has been
anembedded psychologist with two NFL teams in the past. “This is not a simple solution
ofsuspend the season or force re-engagement.” Questions have been raised about when
players—not just on the Bills and Bengals, but all around the league—might feelcomfortable
proceeding with the season.

SPORTSDr. Angel Brutus, a licensed professional counselor with the U.S. Olympic &
ParalympicCommittee, said that letting athletes collectively make a decision of when to
return—andrespecting individuals who didn’t want to—is one way to address the varied
responses thatthey might have. “One of the tenets when it comes to trauma response is,
‘Where is my sense of control?’” shesaid. “If there is an opportunity to cultivate a sense of
control…that in itself has implications forthe ability to decrease angst.”Delaying or
suspending this weekend’s games in respect of Hamlin and players’ mental healthwould be
an extraordinary measure. The only time in modern history that the NFL has nixed anentire
weekend of games was after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when the leagueshuttered
4. the following weekend. It moved those games to the end of the season, with all theplayoff
games getting pushed back a week. The NFL has some wiggle room in its schedule, given the
extra off week that exists between theconference championship games and the Super Bowl.
But altering that would also disrupt theleague’s carefully plotted calendar, which is already
unsettled because of uncertainty over ifand when the Bills and Bengals might finish their
game. In the day after Hamlin’s collapse, the NFL Players Association and the league were
alreadydrawing attention to mental-health options available to players. The union tweeted:
“ALLplayers: please reach out if you need someone to talk to. There are several resources
available toyou,” with a link to counseling options on the NFLPA website. In a memo sent to
teams Tuesday, commissioner Roger Goodell said that each club had receivedinformation
from Dr. Nyaka NiiLampti, the league’s vice president of wellness and clinicalservices, about
mental health and support resources available to players and staff. The memosaid
additional resources could be made available to any team that requests them. One recent
study, from 2019 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, found that elite athletesmay
suffer from higher rates of trauma-related mental disorders, such as post-traumatic
stressdisorder, than the general population. Recognizing these can be made more difficult
by athletes’tendencies to mask symptoms, the study said.

was: why my body and my mind weren’t in sync,” she said. “That’s what I couldn’twrap my
head around.”Biles eventually returned with a scaled-down performance to win bronze on
the balance beam. It’s now growing less and less unusual to see athletes step away from
their respective sports formental-health reasons. Osaka withdrew from the 2021 French
Open, after citing her distress inconducting news conferences that she said contributed to
her anxiety. Philadelphia Eaglestackle Lane Johnson sat out three games last season as he
battled depression. On Tuesday, theUniversity of Iowa’s men’s basketball team said one of
its starters and leading scorers would betaking an indefinite leave to address anxiety. Write
