2. NFL renegotiated its deal with Riddell
to have it end at the conclusion of
the 2013-14 season.
Commissioner Roger Goddell said
“the league had to use quite a bit of
leverage to end the deal. (ESPN.com)
“As the league became increasingly
focused on concussions, NFL officials
became more concerned about the
implications of selling exclusive
branding rights to one helmet
company over another.”
Former players have been in
continuing litigations against Riddell
◦ NFL agree to $765 million settlement
with former players
Challenge question: Which helmet
manufacturer will the NFL choose?

3. Concussions continue to be an on-going problem in football
from the high school level on up to the professional level. This
case is important because it involves current and former
football players, and there family members who lost husbands
and fathers as a result of brain injuries.
More than 4,500 former football players filed a lawsuit against
the NFl, accusing them of concealing the dangers of
concussions and rushing injured players back on to the field.
The NFL eventually agreed to a $765 million dollar settlement
with the 4,500 former players.
Many former NFL players like Tony Dersett, Joe Delamielleure,
and Leonard Marshall have been diagnosed with have signs of
CTE (Chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
Just last year former Charges LB Junior Seau committed suicide.
Players safety is at an all-time high and something needs to be
done in order to protect these football players going foreword.

7. Recently a documentary
aired on PBS entitled
“League of Denial: The
NFL’s Concussion Crisis”,
which examined the
correlation between
football and brain
trauma. It also detailed
the lengths to which the
league went to deny,
dismiss, and cover-up
possible ties between
concussions suffered on
the football field and
long term brain injuries.
