This document discusses the concept of sportsmanship and ethics in sports. It defines sportsmanship as playing fair, with integrity and respect for others. Gamesmanship is the opposite, focusing only on winning through any means. The document examines sportsmanship expectations for players, coaches, owners, fans and how their behaviors can positively or negatively impact communities. Examples of both good and bad sportsmanship from professional and amateur sports are provided. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of integrity and positive spirit in athletics at all levels.
The document discusses various aspects of sportsmanship. It provides examples of both good and bad sportsmanship among owners, coaches, athletes, medical staff, and fans. Specifically, it discusses how Terry Francona supported his friend John Farrell through cancer treatment, while Donald Sterling showed racism and disrespect. It also discusses how Jacoby Ellsbury's injury was misdiagnosed, and how athletes like David Beckham and Tamika Catchings support their communities through charity. While fan support can motivate athletes, disrespectful fans can distract teams. The conclusion expresses optimism that new rules will improve safety and punishments will enhance sportsmanship over time.
Sportsmanship involves respecting opponents, teammates, officials, and fair play. It means abiding by the rules without cheating. Mike Tomlin demonstrated poor sportsmanship by interfering with a play for the opposing team. In contrast, Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey showed good sportsmanship by dedicating himself to helping others through founding a charity. Athletes like the McCourty twins exemplify good sportsmanship by giving back to their community through initiatives to help others and teach youth sports.

The document discusses several aspects of sportsmanship. It defines sportsmanship as ethical and fair behavior during athletic competition. It emphasizes the importance of coaches and owners setting a good example through their leadership and ensuring player safety. Athletes are expected to be good role models for youth due to their public platform. However, using performance-enhancing drugs undermines fair competition and sets a poor example. Overall sportsmanship will improve as people learn to not overreact to short-term outcomes and focus on fair play over many years of competition.

Jake nardone Sportsmanship case study 4 week 8Anne Nardone
This document discusses ethics in sports across several sections. It addresses the importance of sportsmanship from players, coaches, and owners as well as prioritizing player health and safety over winning. Athletes should also give back to their communities through programs and donations. Fan behavior is getting worse with assaults and alcohol abuse. Overall, sports can teach valuable life lessons if the emphasis remains on integrity, fair play, and positive influence.
Owners, coaches, and athletes all play an important role in demonstrating good sportsmanship. Coaches especially set the tone for their teams and are role models for how players should conduct themselves both on and off the field. Athletes also influence their communities and can use their platform to promote positive causes. While sportsmanship has improved in some areas like reducing discrimination, players, coaches, and fans still sometimes display disrespectful behavior and hurl unnecessary insults.
The document discusses various aspects of ethics and sportsmanship in sports. It defines sportsmanship as showing fair and kind play, and discusses how coaches, owners, and athletes should demonstrate respect towards fans, opponents, and each other's safety and well-being. The document also notes that athletes have a platform to inspire communities and should give back through volunteer and charity work. Finally, it states that while fans are encouraged to support their teams, they should do so respectfully without racist or offensive behavior that reflects poorly.
1. The document discusses various types of deviance in sport, including cheating, breaking rules, and the use of performance enhancing drugs.
2. It defines the concepts of sportsmanship as fair play within the rules of a sport, while gamesmanship refers to bending or breaking rules to gain an advantage.
3. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was established in 1998 to monitor and combat the use of performance enhancing drugs in sport, though they still face challenges in eliminating doping.
Sports fandom is an important part of today's society that allows friendly competition. Fans are enthusiastic supporters of sports teams who show their support in various ways. Studies have shown that a fan's mood and hormone levels are directly impacted by how their team performs. Being a fan provides benefits like reducing stress and increasing self-esteem. Sports fandom may fulfill a primal need to be part of a group and experience emotions as part of a tribe.
Bullying the reality and affect in sports-1ROBERT COLEMAN
Bullying occurs at all levels of sports from professional to high school. It can take both physical and nonphysical forms such as inappropriate language, jokes, touching, and hazing rituals. Bullying has serious effects on victims and can cause them to lose focus, quit their sport, or experience anxiety. To prevent bullying, coaches and parents must set an inclusive culture and be approachable. Players can also build mental toughness and assertively counter bullying with respectful responses.
This document discusses sportsmanship from several perspectives. It defines sportsmanship as playing fairly, courteously, respectfully and with integrity. Coaches and owners must display the same ethics as players to set a good example. Health, safety, and players' mental well-being are also important aspects of sportsmanship. Athletes represent their team and community, so their behavior reflects on others. Fans should support their team in a positive manner and not insult the opposing team. The conclusion expresses hope that the future will see more emphasis on sportsmanship, such as players shaking hands after games, to set a good example for youth sports.
This document discusses deviance in sport, including types of deviance (positive, negative, relative) and potential causes. It examines the concept of a "contract to compete" which sets expectations of fair play, sportsmanship and respect for rules. Behavior is considered deviant if it breaks this contract, such as cheating, using drugs, or violence. While some violent acts may be deemed acceptable within a sport's subculture, they contradict the contract's principles of allowing equal opportunity to win. Causes of deviance include pressure to win, lack of moral restraint, and deviant behavior becoming more socially acceptable. The document also discusses dealing with violence between players through match officials and disciplinary actions by governing bodies.
This document discusses deviance in sport, including violence between players and hooliganism among spectators. It defines deviance as behavior outside social norms and distinguishes between positive deviance that intends no harm, and negative deviance that breaks rules and ethics. Causes of on-field violence include innate aggression and frustration, while hooliganism stems from factors like drinking, rivalry, and poor policing. Authorities address these issues through penalties, role models, and improving crowd control.
This document discusses several serious games created by students in a foundations of serious games class. It provides links to 4 games about medical topics. It then lists the high scores of various students in a game about sinking ships. The document discusses potential modifications and rule changes to the sinking ship game. It also discusses ideas for new games about topics like the Roman Empire, geography, and disabilities. Finally, it lists additional serious games students are working on about health topics and provides a mini-game design assignment.
This document provides vocabulary related to people and sports. It lists terms like winner, runners, referee, footballer, players, trainer, manager, owner, journalists, sponsor, and supporters. It then discusses various sports like athletics, basketball, cycling, football, golf, rugby, skiing, swimming, table tennis. For each sport it describes images showing related terms like players, sponsor, winner, supporters, and features of that sport. It also covers compound nouns for sports and terms used for fields/courts.
Major League Baseball players have used performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) for many years. Testing was not implemented until 2002 through collective bargaining between MLB and the MLBPA. While testing began in 2002, players could not be suspended for PED use until 2005. The use of PEDs has social, legal, economic, ethical and political impacts. It raises an ethical dilemma for general managers who want to win but also want players to compete fairly without PEDs. The document examines both the pros and cons of PED use from each of these perspectives.

Deviance part 2 hooliganism, drugs and sport and the lawKerry Harrison
This document discusses several topics related to deviance in sport, including:
- Causes of hooliganism among soccer fans, which are debated and likely multi-factorial. Strategies to control fan violence include banning orders, alcohol control, and improved policing.
- Effects of violence can include reputational damage, risk to fan and player safety, and significant financial costs.
- Drug use in sport is considered unethical, dangerous, and against regulations. Random testing and punishments for violations aim to promote fair competition and athlete health.
- The increasing role of law and legal systems in sport governance and disputes over issues like employment, violence, and doping. Athletes, officials,
Steroids have been prevalent in sports for decades. The document discusses the negative impacts of steroid use, including health issues, dishonesty, and damage to reputations. It examines several high-profile baseball players who used steroids, such as Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, and the legal issues that arose from their use. Overall, the document argues that steroids should be banned from sports because they are harmful, promote cheating, and tarnish the integrity of the game.
Sportsmanship and ethical behavior in professional sports involves owners, coaches, athletes, and fans conducting themselves appropriately. The document discusses examples like John Farrell creating the Jimmy Fund to support cancer patients, as he battled cancer, and Magic Johnson working to reduce the stigma around HIV/AIDS through his advocacy efforts focused on youth. While competition is important, clean hits and positive reinforcement of both teams promotes sportsmanship over intentionally trying to injure opponents or harassing the other team; the conclusion suggests sportsmanship in professional sports has been increasing.
This document discusses various aspects of ethics in sports. It defines sportsmanship as acting with proper ethics while participating in or attending sporting events. It notes that owners and coaches should follow the general rules of their sport and society, and uses examples to illustrate both good and poor ethics among owners. The document also discusses the importance of health and safety for athletes, and how athletes can positively or negatively impact their communities through their actions and influence. It describes how fans are crucial to sports but can behave ethically or unethically, and concludes that ethics in professional sports will likely continue to evolve along with social changes.
The document discusses the importance of sportsmanship in athletics. It provides examples of both good and bad sportsmanship among coaches, athletes, and fans. Good sportsmanship, as demonstrated by coaches like Bruce Cassidy, helps athletes become role models and positively influence their communities. In contrast, poor sportsmanship, like that shown by Claude Julien, can set a bad example and negatively impact others. The future of sports depends on fostering an environment of respect and ethical behavior at all levels.

The document discusses various examples of ethical and unethical behavior in sports. It provides cases of coaches displaying both good and bad sportsmanship. It also examines issues of player health/safety, with the Carolina Panthers showing ethical care for Cam Newton after a hit while Brady Hoke prioritized winning over a player's concussion. Community impact is explored through Magic Johnson's positive influence versus Francisco Rodriguez's domestic abuse reflecting poorly. Fan behavior ranges from generally prosocial effects to an unethical Dutch fan rampage in Rome. The conclusion acknowledges there are two sides to these issues.

[Editor’s note: On Thursday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke at the Harvard School of Public Health.
The full text of his prepared remarks, as distributed by the NFL, appears below.]
NBC Sports
Let me begin by thanking Dean Julio Frenk for inviting me to speak here today. It is truly an honor to discuss
two topics that I am passionate about: the game of football and its future.
The history of football is closely connected with the history of Harvard. Football has been played here with
distinction since 1873. Professor Paul Weiler of Harvard Law School persuasively argues that the first college
football game took place in Cambridge between Harvard and McGill University.
President Faust paid eloquent tribute to Harvard’s football legacy in a speech the night before last year’s
Harvard-Yale game. She mentioned the university’s landmark innovations in the game – uniforms, a team
doctor, a trainer, a kicking specialist. Harvard’s legacy includes eight national championships and 20 College
Football Hall of Famers. Also the current starting quarterback of the Buffalo Bills – Ryan Fitzpatrick – and
Baltimore Ravens center Matt Birk – who last year won the Walter Payton Award as the NFL Man of the Year
for his service on, and especially, off the field.
Football is embedded in your traditions, and your contributions have defined and changed how we play the
game. We are proud of the connection. And we know that Harvard is proud of your team and players for their
extraordinary accomplishments on the football field, in the classroom, and in life. From Harvard’s first African-
American football captain, William Lewis in 1893, to Coach Murphy’s fine team this year, you have given so
much to the sport we love. And good luck to the Crimson this Saturday in “The Game” against Yale, one of
football’s grandest traditions.
Harvard and the NFL both stand for something else – leadership. Others in education, sports, and countless
places beyond the playing fields look to us to influence their own decisions. We embrace our leadership
position. And leadership means certain things, whether in sports, academia, or public health. It means thinking
about the long term. It means listening and learning from people, including your critics or those who may be
telling you what you don’t want to hear. It means facing up to your challenges and working tirelessly to make
sure you make the right choices, for the right reasons, based on science and facts, not speculation.
So today, in this place of leadership, I want to speak about our role in protecting the health and safety of
athletes – not just in the NFL and football, but in all sports and all levels of play. Our nation is experiencing a
public health crisis fueled by growing levels of obesity, particularly in children. You understand the
consequences and what needs to be done to reverse the trend. We know kids n.
The document discusses several aspects of sportsmanship including treating all players with respect, the responsibilities of coaches and owners to set a good example, using their platform to help causes in their community, the importance of health and safety including the dangers of steroid use, how athletes are role models for fans especially young kids, and how athletes can promote positive messages. It concludes that athletes need to progress sportsmanship and stick together to bring good to their communities through their example and promoting positive messages.
nick vandelogt concussions in sport posterNick Vandelogt
This document discusses the current landscape of concussions in sports. It covers several areas: the short and long term effects of concussions, what professional sports leagues are doing to address concussions through increased funding of research and improved equipment, and the social responsibilities of coaches, doctors, and athletes to ensure player health and safety. Concussions are a risk in many contact sports and can cause transient brain dysfunction as well as long term issues like CTE if not properly managed.

Netherlands vs Austria Netherlands Face Familiar Foes in Euro Cup Germany Gro...Eticketing.co
The Netherlands are in Group D in Euro Cup Germany - and, unpaid to this, they will be coming up against familiar foes. Remarkably, they have played France, who have fashioned some of the greatest players of all time, 30 times throughout history. Despite France being more effective in major competitions, including captivating the World Cup in 2018, Holland have the greater head-to-head record.

However, in 2023, they played one another twice, with France endearing both matches 4-0 and 2-1 individually. Against Poland and Austria, the Netherlands also have a stout record, winning just under half the matches. They faced Austria at Euro 2020, engaging 2-0, and they haven't lost to Poland since 1979.
The lettering is on the wall for Holland to qualify for the knockouts, but nothing is failsafe. The Netherlands kickstart their Euros campaign against Poland on Sunday, June 16th. In Hamburg, they will have to go up against one of the best strikers in the world, Robert Lewandowski.
Netherlands vs Austria: Tough Challenges Await the Netherlands in Euro Cup Germany
Five days later, they travel south to face France in Leipzig, a side led by Kylian Mbappe - one of the finest players in the world currently and one of the most impressive players in his nation's history. To conclude, they face Austria in Berlin, knowing it could be the end of the road if they don't perform.
Ronald Koeman is widely considered one of the more successful Dutch managers in Premier League history, considering the nation has a reputation for struggling to replicate their talents in England. The former Everton manager went against that script and shone — and now he is back managing his nation.

Netherlands vs Austria: Ronald Koeman's Tactical Approach For UEFA Euro 2024
As well as being the highest-scoring defender in history, Koeman is a man with immense tactical knowledge. He returned to manage Holland at the start of 2023 after it was announced Louis van Gaal would retire. His life back in the dugout with the team wasn't easy, as he lost his first match 4-0 to France after going 3-0 down within 21 minutes.
However, he eventually helped them qualify for Euro Cup Germany. The 61-year-old likes to organize his team with a defensive mindset. Some might call it pragmatic as he defends with minimal space between the lines, but that's often needed for international football.
Psaroudakis: Family and Football – The Psaroudakis Success StoryPsaroudakis
Psaroudakis, a name that resonates with football fans around the globe, is a testament to the powerful synergy between familial support and individual passion. Born on March 10, 1992, in the historic city of Heraklion, Crete, Psaroudakis’ journey to international football stardom is a compelling narrative of dedication, perseverance, and unwavering family support. His story not only highlights his athletic prowess but also underscores the crucial role his family played in shaping his career and character.
Psaroudakis’ early life in Heraklion was deeply influenced by a supportive and nurturing family environment. His father, a former semi-professional footballer, recognized Psaroudakis’ potential from an early age. Acting as his first coach, his father’s guidance was instrumental in igniting Psaroudakis’ passion for football. This paternal influence instilled in him a strong work ethic and fundamental skills that would become the foundation of his future success. His mother, a dedicated homemaker, provided a stable and nurturing environment, ensuring that Psaroudakis could pursue his dreams without any hindrances.
From a young age, Psaroudakis showed an innate talent for football. Growing up in Heraklion, he spent countless hours playing football in local parks and streets with friends and family. His natural ability was evident even in these informal settings, and his enthusiasm for the game was infectious. By the age of five, Psaroudakis had joined a local youth football club, where his skills began to flourish. His father’s role as his first coach during these formative years was crucial, as he emphasized not only technical skills but also the importance of discipline and teamwork.
The transition from playing in local parks to joining a structured football environment marked a significant step in Psaroudakis’ journey. At the age of ten, he joined the youth academy of OFI Crete, one of Greece’s most esteemed football clubs. This move marked the beginning of a more rigorous and professional approach to his training. The academy environment was demanding, focusing on honing technical abilities and instilling values of sportsmanship and dedication. Psaroudakis’ dedication to his craft was evident as he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a standout player in the youth teams.
The support of Psaroudakis’ family was unwavering during this critical period. His father continued to be a source of guidance and mentorship, while his mother ensured that he had everything he needed to succeed. Their collective efforts created a balanced environment where Psaroudakis could focus entirely on his development as a footballer. This familial support was not just about providing the basics; it was about creating an environment where Psaroudakis felt encouraged and motivated to pursue his dreams relentlessly.
As Psaroudakis transitioned from the youth academy to professional football, the challenges became more significant.
Belgium vs Romania Injuries and Patience in Belgium’s Euro Cup Germany Squad....Eticketing.co
Belgium coach Domenico Tedesco will wait for several key players to recover from injury. Even if it means they miss the opening Euro Cup Germany stages of the European Championship in Germany this month. Veteran defender Jan Vertonghen, midfielder Youri Tielemans and defender Arthur. Theate are being given time to play in the tournament because they are considered vital to Belgium’s cause, Tedesco said on Tuesday.

"Of course, you prefer to take players who are fully fit, but that's okay. We want to wait and be patient for some players even if they cannot play in those first matches," he told a press conference. The 37-year-old Vertonghen, Belgium’s Euro Cup 2024 most-capped international with 154 appearances, is struggling to shake off a groin injury.
"He will be there normally. This also applies to Youri Tielemans and Arthur Theate. The latter's position is very sensitive. We don't have many choices at left back. "It will only change if it turns out that they will only be available when, say, the final of the Euro 2024 Championship comes around. That's too long to wait. "However, I am confident that the injured boys are on track for the Euros.
Belgium vs Romania: Radu Dragusin Prepares for Crucial Role in Euro Cup Germany
Some of them have taken not one but two steps forward in their rehabilitation," he said. None of the injured players will feature in this week’s warm-up friendlies against Montenegro and Luxembourg. Romania centre-back Radu Dragusin found chances limited at Tottenham Hotspur in the second half of the 2023-24 season.
But is crucial to his country's cause at UEFA Euro 2024 where his aerial ability, physicality and hard graft make him a standout player. The 22-year-old moved to North London from Italian side Genoa in January but was kept on the sidelines by the form of another new arrival for the season, Mickey van de Ven, something Romania coach Edward Iordanescu admitted was a concern.
It will mean limited game-time going into the finals, but Dragusin, who cites Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk as a role model, started every Euro Cup Germany qualifier as Romania went through the campaign unbeaten in their 10 games. He will be among their most important players in their first game in Germany against Ukraine in Munich on June 17, taking the right centre-back role in what is likely to be a back four.

2. Definition of Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship is a key part of sports at any level,
professional or recreational. It is like the glue that keeps
sports from falling apart into chaos and fighting. Adherence
to sportsmanlike behavior allows for the game to be played
out the way it is meant to be played. Sportsmanship is a key,
fundamental idea that keeps sports, whether it be
recreational or professional, fair, fun and most of all safe for
all those participating in them. Through the act of playing
with sportsmanship, all participants can have a fun and
enjoyable time playing without the risk of physical or mental
harm.
3.
4. Owners and Coaches
Coaches and owners have one of the biggest roles in
carrying out sportsmanship. What they preach and what
they do during practice and the offseason, as well as in
game, will start to reflect on their players. This can be good
or bad. If a coach repeatedly carries a positive attitude and
never has a bad response after a loss, players will do the
same. The same will go if they lose their temper, or argue
with the refs. Coaches have to lead by example and carry
out good sportsmanship practices everywhere they go so
that their players will do the same.
5.
6.
7. Health and Safety
In any sport, injuries are going to happen. They are inevitable but
what you do to recover from them is what really defines the
severity. Take for example, concussion protocol. A star player goes
down with a head injury and comes to the sideline. You have a
choice, check them for a concussion and make sure they are ok, or
send them back out at risk of making it worse. Player health should
always come before the outcome of a game. Plus, why go out and
have him win the game, but be out for even longer with a severe
concussion. Anytime there is any chance that a serious injury could
have happened, the player should be checked by a trainer or
medical professional immediately to ensure that they are truely ok
and ready to play again.
8.
9.
10. Athletes and Community
Although it isn’t a rule, most athletes will go out of their way to
give back to their community. JJ Watt donated hundreds of
thousands of dollars to families dealing with the aftermath of
Hurricane Harvey. Rob Gronkowski has given lots of Patriots
merchandise to kids suffering from awful diseases like cancer.
These guys remind us that athletes are people to and they do a
very good job of aiding in there community as well as using
their celebrity status as a platform to get across messages that
need to be addressed.
11.
12.
13. Fan Behavior
Fan behavior has long been a very relevant topic of
discussion. Most of the time, a healthy fanbase plays a key
role in games and can boost the moral of the team they are
rooting for. However, fans have been at the root of
countless amounts of “events” that come up in games. On
Monday the 29th, a fan threw a sex toy onto the field
during the Patriots vs Bills game. There have been many
accounts of streaking and fans running onto the fields. Fans
should be restricted to staying in there seats and only
saying things that would benefit somewhat not curse
words or any other hate words.
