Career Synopsis I joined Mid-Glamorgan Area Health Authority in 1974 as an apprentice
electrician, until qualifying to an approved electrician in 1979.
Joined British Coal as a service technician in 1979 where I was promoted to
supervising engineer, I then moved to Sony UK in 1985 as a maintenance
engineer within their CRT plant.
I started my voyage into traffic signals and motorway communications in
1986 as maintenance engineer for GEC, where I was promoted to Contract
engineer and since then I have worked in the traffic industry with varying
traffic signalling companies.
Finally joining Transport for London, as traffic control engineer on the
ELTRACS team in 2004.
My experiences range from a wide variety of electrical engineering,Electrical
installation, NMCS 1 & 2, traffic signals, planning and project management,
managing service contracts, budgetary control and Health and Safety
including CDM.

Principal Engineer – ELTRACS Tunnels Safety Systems
Directing and controlling the reactive and proactive maintenance of
NMCS 2 associated equipment and traffic signals at the 11 of London’s
road tunnels and linked road network (A406, A3220, A13, A12, A102, A2)
which includes equipment such as CCTV, VMS, communications
systems, LDIS (London’s TLRN) OHVD (both tunnel and TLRN)
emergency telephones, MIDAS, ATS, Car park systems (Kingston and
Croydon), Radio, Loudspeaker Public address systems, barriers, PLC
and PCM network.
Designing, implement and commissioning enhancement / improvement
programmes ensuring that contractual and financial targets are met.
Manage the operational aspect of the ELTRACS maintenance contract
ensuring that the specified performance targets are met.
Representing TfL in various meetings with other departments, Area

Working on the TfL TLRN traffic signal maintenance contracts, carrying
out maintenance, support, fault rectification and liaison with TfL clients,
LTCC, Boroughs and Area Stewards.
2000 – 2002 Peek Traffic, Kent CC Traffic Signal Maintenance contract
Contract Supervisor
In charge of the Kent traffic signals maintenance contract controlling the
reactive and proactive maintenance of the traffic signal equipment and
Bus satellite systems, ensuring that all performance levels are met.
Implementing new works / modernisation projects were carried out
effectively and within specified budgets.
1998 – 2000 National Assembly for Wales, NM4 contract
Contract Manager
Direct and control the NM4 motorway communications contract for the
whole of Wales, which included, communications systems, traffic
signalling equipment, MS2, VMS, EMS, mobile VMS, COBS, matrices,
emergency telephones, CCTV, Ice alert equipment, MIDAS, Road traffic
monitoring equipment making sure that all targets were met with efficiency
whilst operating good health and safety practices at all times.
Implementing, designing and commissioning new equipment on the Road
network and its tunnels.
Responsible for contractual invoices and budget forecasts
1992 – 1998 Siemens Traffic, Welsh Office Motorway Contract
Contract Engineer
Managing the Welsh Office Motorway maintenance contract, which
included the maintenance of all associated equipment on M4 motorway all
trunk roads with Wales, ensuring all performance levels are met.
Control of subordinates, including mentoring and support.
Successful implementation from NMCS1 to NMCS 2, which took
planning, research, scheduling and working with others developing
rapport and partnership.
1986 – 1992 GEC traffic, Welsh Office Motorway Contract
Maintenance Engineer
Working on the Welsh Office M4 motorway maintenance and trunk road
signalling contract, which included NMCS1 equipment, CCTV, VMS, ATS
and Traffic signalling equipment including SCOOT and Outstation
monitoring equipment.
Promoted to Contract Engineer after proving my capabilities both
technically and personally.
1985 – 1986 Sony UK, Bridgend
Maintenance Technician
Working as an electrical maintenance technician in the CRT plant,
maintaining such equipment as PLC controls, robotics, RF drives, CRT
devices.
3. 1979 – 1985 British Coal, Technical Services Division, Tondu
Field Service Technician
Based in the technical services depot in Tondu, carrying out testing,
investigations and overhauls on underground equipment from ELV control
equipment to HV switching controls.
Carried out varying site visits to underground locations to rectify electrical
breakdowns of vital engineering machinery. Whilst working too an
extremely high standard of Health and Safety polices.
