Where is the Day of the Dead celebrated?
The Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico, Central America, and certain parts of the United States.
When is it celebrated?
The celebration begins on November 1 and ends on November 2.
What is pan de muerto?
Pan de muerto is the Mexican bread of the dead. It is eaten by the dead’s loved ones on their altar along
with the deceased’s favorite foods.The ‘bones’ (strips of dough wrapped around the bread) represent
the dead and the tear drop baked into the top represents sorrow.
What is an ofrenda?
An ofrenda is an offering set out for the returning souls to enjoy. These altars usually consist of the dead
favorite foods, flowers, music, some of their favorite items, and pictures of him or her.
What are calacas?
A calaca is a traditional Spanish-Mexican name for a skeleton. The calacas are made and used as
decorations for the Day of the Dead. The literal Mexican definition is the Grim Reaper, or a skeleton
figure representing death.
