I ask my mom how she views the sacraments and whether they truly have value. My mom acknowledges that she does not believe a child who is not
baptized is condemned to hell, nor does she seem to have a lot of respect for sacrament of holy orders. This leads us into a discussion of the scandal
that has rocked the church, the abuse of children by priests covered up by priests. My mom seems to separate her religion and Catholic priests.
She tells me she does not pay attention to priests when she is at mass because she sees priests as flawed and is distrustful of the Church's refusal to
let priests get married or allow women to become priests. I am very familiar with my mom's view of priests because my parents often cautioned me
not to be taken in by priests or be alone with priests. I press her on this issue because I have a much more difficult time understanding how I can

There are about 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide that make up almost sixteen percent of the total world Population. (BBC News) That is a tremendous
amount of people. The Pope rules over all of those people in the organization known as " The Catholic Church." Becoming Pope is no simple task by

As an "architect" in a Catholic school, the principal bears the load of responsibility for setting the tone for each school year and " as an architect of
Catholic culture, is to connect the school's core values and beliefs to Christ and the Gospel intentionally, deliberately, and continually." (Cook, 2001, p.
20) The principal, being the spiritual leader of the school, helps support the Catholic school's mission and the xxxx of the Catholic identity of the
school. They must lead through example and build the faith community. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops states that " Within such
communities teachers and pupils experience together what it means to live a life of prayer, personal responsibility and freedom reflective of Gospel
Values." (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 1973, p. 30) During the first week of school is when the mission of the school and the

The Catholic Church's current pope, Pope Francis once said, "A good Catholic meddles in politics, offering the best of himself, so that those who
govern can govern. But what is the best that we can offer to those who govern? Prayer!" Catholics are approximately half of the number of Christians,
reaching more than one billion members. This number makes it one of the largest religions in the world. In 2003, the Catholic population in the United
States was 63.4 million (Roman Catholic Church, 2017). The Catholic Church's basic beliefs influence their demographics, party affiliation, stances on
different political issues, and involvement in American politics.
I attended a service at The Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. At this service, politics were not directly mentioned, but Father
Darin Schmidt said a few interesting words. In a message to the congregation he said, "love unconditionally, without limits." Additionally, he also said,
"peace, liberty, and justice for all." I think these quotes are helpful in understanding the Catholic Church's ideologies. During prayer, they mentioned a
few current issues including support for the military, the Las Vegas shooting, refugees, and victims of natural disasters. Besides these few observations,
the cathedral did express any straightforward political statements.

Though writing at different times and to different audiences, both Ignatius of Antioch and Cyprian of Carthage found their voices in addressing the

Criticism In Mariette Lippo's 'Confirmation Names'
In "Confirmation Names," Mariette Lippo describes a group of girls choosing their patron saints. Through the use of irony and syntax, the author scorns
the Catholic Church's treatment towards adolescent girls and the standards they are held under. However, when using a feminist criticism, Lippo's
disdain turns into anger towards society, not just the Catholic faith alone. When under an archetypal criticism, the piece focuses more on the religious
stereotypes of the harsh, reserved nun and the classic rebellious Catholic schoolgirls, and thus provokes a sense of pity for the girls and an automatic
cringe–worthy distaste for the nuns. Both the close reading and literary criticisms produce new tones and shed different lights on the conflicting
aspects of "Confirmation Names." Initially, "Confirmation Names" explains the process behind confirmation names for young Catholic girls.
However, through the use of language and literary devices, Lippo clearly presents a defiant tone towards the way young girls are restricted in the

Martin Luther was born into a world of science and humanism; therefore, less theology. He studied liberal arts and law, per his strict father's wishes.
However, one day a fierce thunderstorm struck Luther. He called out to St. Anne, and promised he would become a monk if St. Anne would help save
him. Well, he survived the storm, and studied theology at Wittenberg University. After throwing himself into the faith, he began to feel that the church
was corrupt and diffusive. At this point in history, the church was beginning to kind of fall apart. It is often misunderstood that something must have

The churches of the Anglican Communion have their historical roots in the English Reformation (Anglican History). The Anglican church originated
when King Henry VIII split from the Roman Catholic Church in 1534 when Pope Clement VII refused to grant the king an annulment.
The following overview derives from the New Catholic Encyclopedia. Henry VIII, the second's son of King Henry VII, was groomed for ruling the
Church during his youth, with a broad education in theology, music, languages, and poetry. His elder brother was being prepared for the throne, but
passed away from a sudden illness. Henry VIII took over as King, and became engaged to his brother's widow, Catherine of Aragon. Based on the
Old Testaments ban on marrying the widow of your brother, King Henry VIII became concerned his marriage was cursed by God. He petitioned Pope
Clement VII for a papal annulment, but the Pope immediately rejected the annulment. In 1531, he compelled the English clergy to accept him as head
of the church of England, leading the Parliament to pass a series of laws depriving the Roman Catholic Church of any authority in England. King Henry
VIII received the same legal authority over the English Church that the Pope operated over the Roman Catholic Church. Following this, Kind Henry
VIII married Anne Boleyn, and split his church from the Roman Catholic Church, forming the original Anglican Church.
The word Anglican originates from the ecclesia anglicana, a medieval Latin phrase that dates back to 1246. The Latin phrase means The English

In modern day, many stories can be seen as examples of Christ's' mission. One in particular was the story of Puccini. Puccini was a famous composer
who had many young students that he instructed. These people were the best of the best and were loyal and faithful to him. Later in his life, Puccini

other facilities which care for children, have had their experience of this problem, most attention has been brought to the abuse in the Catholic

The issue of opportunity is a major factor in the sex offenses in Churches. In churches, opportunities for abuse are in activities such as taking children
home after an activity or youth group, giving individual attention to a child, and being alone with children in summer camps. These opportunities allow
priests to be alone with children without other adults being suspicious or concerned. Another factor in explaining the opportunity for abuse is the
power and influence that clergy have. Since in the church, priests or ministers are influential in defining what is right and wrong, they may have the
power to show abusive behavior as normal. Children are in a position that church workers can use their authority within the church to persuade a child
to comply with sexual acts (Farrell & Taylor 2000). When authority is misused in this way it adds trauma to the abuse. The betrayal of trust involved is
enormous, and for some victims it causes the difficulty to trust authority again.

An Introduction to the Issue Throughout the 20th Century, thousands of reports about Catholic priests and bishops sexually abusing children have
been and are continuing to surface into the media. These reports have been dealt with internally by the church rather than civil authorities. In addition,
the church has also been covering up many of the reports, paying over two billion dollars to prevent the scandal from being "leaked" into the public. A
letter from the Vatican written in 1997 expressed "serious reservations" about reporting priests that were suspected ofsexual abuse. The church has been
hiding reports and avoiding suspicion by not acting guilty. Instead of bringing the issue public they have instead launched a three year investigation
of U.S. women religious congregations which cost over three million. The Vatican leadership also ordered a doctrinal evaluation of the U.S. women
religious leadership's central network, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. Furthermore, bishops have issued press releases as well as
reports and studies. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops published two reports on February 27, 2004. The first report written by the

For a society to function properly, hierarchies are established to ensure organization, collaboration, and different levels of authority. While people in
positions of power hold many responsibilities, man is still fallible. This inevitable conflict is illustrated when Ambrosio, an idolized member of the
church, succumbs to temptation and sins. In Matthew Lewis' The Monk, Ambrosio's downfall as an esteemed religious figure depicts the contamination
and corruption of a man of God, and by extension, religion as a whole. The dissonance created within Ambrosio in turn jeopardizes a society and its
faith in God.
Ambrosio was highly praised within the monastery and Madrid for his stainless character, and yet his hypocritical downfall exemplifies the

The speaker was discussing acceptance/fear of rejection. He said these things are what cause us all to sin, in all the various ways. They also
emphasized that the King James Version of theBible is the only true version, and all others are sacrilegious. He read from 1 Corinthians 8. He warned
Christians to not "be a stumbling block unto others." This includes dinning out on a Sunday, as this is the Lord's Day for rest. He also spoke of
weakness in the Bible. It is prevalent throughout, but it is never justified. The speaker the continued further reading into 1 Corinthians 9 which reveals
advice from Paul, where he says "rights are not important. Give them up for God and others. Surrender to Him," (Bro. Joe Reinhard, personal

Experimental/Emotional: The congregation was staunch. Everyone was very quiet and attentive. Crying babies were hushed and removed from the
room. Minimal distractions were present. Everyone gave the speaker the utmost respect. Fear appeared to be the most prevalent emotion. Perhaps it
was fear and not respect that kept the congregation attentive. The speakers all emphasized human insignificance on more than one occasion. At one
point Bro John Reinhard stated we have "no intrinsic worth of our own." He then went on to say we are nothing without God (2014).

This religions shrine is located in Hong Kong and was created by a former philosophy teacher Rev. Yuet Kai Fai Sei. Construction began on the

The Importance Of Cathedrals In David Macaulay's Cathedral
"Stories about architecture are stories about people," said David Macaulay, author of Cathedral (4). The intention of cathedrals was to draw people, and
in turn inspire those who came to pray, learn, and worship (Macaulay, Cathedral 4). Cathedrals remain inspirational in their enormous scale and
overpowering beauty, and that these places of worship are still standing after many centuries show a level of determination and integrity in those that
built the edifices (Macaulay, Cathedral 4). Architect Vitruvius wrote, "All the buildings have two components: The building itself and an idea that its
architecture tried to express" (McNamara 6). People build churches because they believed in something (McNamara 6). In David Macaulay's book,
Built to Last, he says the mindset behind building cathedrals was that of honor and dedication. Macaulay's research noted that, "The new cathedral
would be built to the glory of God, and it mattered little that it might take more than one hundred years to construct it" (Macaulay, Built to Last 98).
However, there is more to cathedrals than just building something grand and beautiful to honor God. Churches and cathedrals were built to be packed
