2. The reason why we chose Food as our topic is because we have realised that
many people around the world do not have sufficient food to eat every day. In
fact, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, there is
an estimated 870 million people, or one in eight people in the world who suffer
from chronic undernourishment in 2010 – 2012. Many of us take food for
granted, never realising that we are very lucky compared to some parts of the
world. Every day, we get to choose what food to eat, even wasting food just
because it doesn’t taste good. But in less developed countries, people are forced
to scavenge for food even in thrash bins.
3. Food, as defined by Dictionary.com, is “any nourishing substance that is
eaten, drunk, or otherwise taken into the body to sustain life, provide
energy, promote growth, etc”.
Humans also have the right to feed themselves in dignity, have enough food, have the
means to access it and that it adequately meets an individual’s dietary needs. Despite
this, there are many people around the world starving while we live in comfort. Food is
important, it is a daily necessity of life but many are denied of it.
4. Fortunately, there are multiple organisations in the world that reach out to
those in need of help. One of them is the Red Cross and they have a branch in
Singapore. One of their projects is “FoodAid”. It helps to provide food for
those who are disadvantaged and overlooked in our community such as
skipped generation families (grandparent – headed households), single elders
living alone and single-parent families.
The Singapore Red Cross has identified about 200 families who can benefit
from a sustainable programme that puts ‘real’ food on their table.
FoodAid gives out $250 worth of vouchers to these group of people for food
every month. Even though this may sound little, it still can sustain a family of
four for at least a year.
