In a recent press release, NASBE announced that its
new report entitles A State of Engagement
recommends five policy initiatives to promote student
engagement.

3.  The report, which was generated through a
NASBE study group, investigates the
emotional, behavioral, and cognitive
factors associated with student
engagement and how various stakeholders
and environments impact students’
investment in learning. According to NASBE,
state investment in education is
unproductive if students are mentally and
physically disengaged in the classroom.

4.  To create an educational system that
fosters student engagement, NASBE
suggests that policymakers advance
engagement-centered measures of
educational achievement, invest in
personalized learning environments,
promote school systems that emphasize
engagement, and encourage stakeholder
collaboration. The State of Engagement
report also suggests that states endorse
professional development and licensing
curriculum that helps educators implement
student engagement strategies.
