3. EMOTIONS:
Definition:
The term emotion derived from a Latin Word “Emovere” which means
to move, to excite, to stir up or to agitate.
Emotion is a sudden outburst of sensation. ( By Hoffding )
Emotion can be defined as feelings, or effect that involves a mixture of
physiological arousal, conscious experiences and behavior.
Emotion is a feeling that involves subjective evaluation, physiological
processes and cognitive beliefs.

5. PHYSIOLOGY OF EMOTION:
When we are excited, terrified or enraged we perceive some of
the things happening in our bodies.
Many of the bodily changes that occur in emotion are
produced by the activity of ANS.
6. EXPRESSIONOF EMOTION:
Expression:
“The action of making known one’s thoughts or feelings.”
“A look on someone’s face that conveys a particular emotion”.
There are six basic expression of emotion such as;
i. Happy
ii. Sad
iii. Anger
iv. Fear
v. Disgust
vi. Surprise
7. HAPPY:
Happiness is basically “feelings or showing pleasure or
contentment”.
Happy expression are universally and easily recognized and are
interpreted as conveying messages related to enjoyment, pleasure, a
positive disposition and friendliness.
o Symptoms:
Cheeks raise
Lips part
Lip corner pull
Example:
You jump for joy when you are so happy and excited you punch in the
air , jump up and generally laugh and smile. Like as “ The bowler jump
for joy as the ball hit the middle stump”.
8. SAD:
Sadness is basically; “The condition or quality of being sad.”
Sad expression are often conceived as opposite to happy ones but this
view is too simple, although the action of the mouth corner is
opposite.
Sad expression convey messages related to loss, bereavement,
discomfort, pain, helpless etc.
Symptoms:
Inner corners of the eyebrows pulled up together
Upper eyelids drooped and eyes looking down
Lip corners pulled downward
9. EXAMPLE:
• You feel dispirited or be sad and gloomy. Like as “ I am
feeling low because my best friend is very ill.”
• You feel low in spirit , downcast. Like as “He was depressed
by the loss of his son”.
10. ANGER:
Definition:
“A strong feeling of displeasure or hostility.”
Anger is a negative feeling which often happens when a person thinks
that someone or something has done wrong, bad or which puts them in
danger.
Symptoms:
• Eyebrows pulled down and together
• Eyes opened wide, staring hard
• Lips pressed tightly together
11. EXAMPLE:
Ruth asks her sister if she can play with her toys. Her sister tells her, “No I
don’t want you getting your germs all over my stuff”. Ruth gets really mad.
She waits until her sister goes outside to play, then she goes into her room
and starts to destroy her toys.
12. FEAR:
Definition:
“An unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm.”
Anxiety is related to fear because both are associated with unhealthy
effects if prolonged.
o Symptoms:
• Eyebrows raised and pulled together
• Raise upper eyelids
• Tensed lower eyelids
• Jaw dropped open and lips stretched horizontally backwards
13. EXAMPLE:
You are walking in a dark street late at night and you hear footsteps behind you. You start to
tremble, your heart beats fast. At that time which expression show on your face is fear.
14. DISGUST:
Definition:
“ A feeling of revulsion or strong disapproval aroused by something
unpleasant or offensive.”
Disgust expression are often part of body’s responses to objects such as
rotting flesh and insects in food, or other offensive materials that are
rejected as suitable to eat.
o Symptoms:
• Lowered eyebrow
• Wrinkling on the side and bridge of the nose
• Upper lip is raised in an inverted “U”
• Lower lip raised and slightly protruding
15. EXAMPLE:
For example while eating food you may find an insects in your food then you suddenly says that “
such a disgusting food ”.
16. SURPRISE:
Definition:
“It is stated as; an unexpected or astonishing event, fact etc.”
Surprise expression are fleeting and difficult to detect or record in real
time. They almost occur in response to events that are unanticipated and
they convey message about something being unexpected, sudden, novel
or amazing.
o Symptoms:
• Eyebrows raised but not drawn together
• Upper eyelids raised lower eyelids neutral
• Jaw dropped down
17. EXAMPLE:
• An example of surprise is organizing birthday party for someone without them knowing about it.
• Another example of surprise is hiding behind a corner and jumping out just as someone walks
past.
