Lesson 2
Teacher: Let’s learn some more consonant blends.
Teacher: Let’s review: Do you remember What is a vowel? What is a consonant?
Student:Recites the vowels and consonants.
Yes, that’s right. Vowels are a, e, i, o, u and sometimes y.
Consonants are all the other letters of the alphabet. b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x,
and z.

Make sure the student knows the sound of each grapheme/letter and each blend.

eacher: Consonant blends are when two or three consonants come together and a
little of each letter is heard as we blend the sounds together.
Teacher: For example: What is the sound of this consonant: b?
Student: /c/
Teacher: What is the sound of this consonant: l?
Student: /l/
Teacher: What is the sound when b and l are blended together?
Student: /cl/
Teacher: Good. Now let’s see some words that begin with bl.
Drill with the flash cards and have the student sound out the blend, then the whole
word.

Activities: Read words aloud, write words on the white board, build them with
magnetic letters, build them with cards, complete worksheets, read decodable books
and reading with those blends, play blends games.
[Repeat the same procedure of sounding out each consonant, then blending b cl, fl, gl,
pl, sl. Instruct on multiple blends, no more than they can remember, in the same
session. Then read with them You can introduce the blends in different order,
depending on the words they might see in a particular book they are reading.]
Each blend lesson from there should start with reviewing the letter sounds and the
blend sounds that have been taught to that point.
