A switching system allows for telephone communication and includes inlets and outlets connected by a switching network. The network can be symmetric, folded, or non-folded and blocking networks have a blocking probability. A switching system also considers busy hour traffic measured in erlangs and uses a control subsystem for direct or common control. Early manual systems used local or central battery exchanges with single or multi termination switchboards that each had advantages and disadvantages.
