1. EXPANSION JOINT

2. INTRODUCTION
 An expansion joint or movement joint is an assembly
designed to hold parts together while safely absorbing
temperature-induced expansion and contraction of
materials, vibrations, or to allow movement due to
ground settlement or sesmic activity. Examples
include:
1. Building structures.
2. Railway tracks.
3. Bridges.
4. Piping system.
5. Large vehicles.

4. BRIDGE
EXPANSION
JOINT
 It is designed to allow continuous traffic movement
between structure.
 It stops the bridge from expansion.
 Modular expansion lines are used to create it.

5. RAILWAY
EXPANSION
JOINT
 It provides continuous surface for car wheels travelling
over it.
 Two rail strips glide along each other at a very acute
angle during contraction or expansion.

6. PIPE
EXPANSION
JOINTS
 It is necessary in system that convey high temperature
substances.
 It contains bellow made up of stainless steel, plastic,
fabric, etc.
 It should be flexible enough to accept deflections and
withstand pressure.
 It is used to reduce noise absorption, anti-vibration,
earthquake movements, etc.

MOLDED RUBBER EXPANSION JOINT
 It is manufactured by wrapping fabric reinforced rubber sheets around
product mandrel.
 Additionally, steel wires or metal rings are also added for
reinforcement.
 It is then covered with windings of nylon peel ply to pressurize all
layers together.
MOLDED RUBBER EXPANSION JOINT
 Its made with use of molding process.
 It is in the shape of medium size with bead rings.
 It is manufactured on cylindrical mandrel wrapped with bias cut fabric
ply.

LIMIT RODS
 These are used to limit/control axial compression or expansion.
 They allow expansion joint to move between nuts stops on rod.
 They prevent bellow over-extension under full thrust pressure.
COVERS
 They are used to protect internal bellows from damages.
 They may be removable or permanent.
 They also serves as insulation on elbows.

9. FAILIRES&
MEASURES
 The causes of material failure are:
Mis-handling, im-proper installation, inadequate
support, corrosion, over-pressure, bending & deflection of
bellows,etc.
 The counter measures are:
Use of well-furnished materials, proper inspection, time
to time maintenance like: oiling, greasing, cleaning,etc.
