Multi-disciplinary clinical education The Venture Development Legal Clinic was a joint program of the Faculty of Law and School of business at the University of Calgary. 600 law students, 200 MBA students assisted over 3000 entrepreneurs by providing them with information regarding pre-start-up legal and business issues.
4. Objectives: Give them an experiential learning opportunity Provide local entrepreneurs with access to legal and business planning advice The program provided law and MBA studenets with experiential education and entrepreneurs with an affordable and accessible resource of business and legal expertise
5. Clinic operations The director, a lawyer with practice experience, was responsible for overseeing the management of clinic and clinical education. Management activities: fund-raising,financialreporting,policycreation,operationsmanagement,public relations and mentor relations. The role of clinical instructor:screening clients,conducting pre-interview sessions,chairing the post-interview de-briefing session,detemining the scope of individual student assignments, reviewing all client letters and evaluatung student work.

Clinic sessions were attended by up to 5 clients,5 law students and 5 MBA students The use of standardize procedure was an important factor in the student`s experience At the beginning of each term students attended an orientation session where they were instructed on the clinic procedure.tis allowed students to understand their role and responsibilities Students selected their client from a list describing the business and legal concerns
7. After the interview,immediately is a conclusion session,during that ,each group of law and MBA students first described their clients` business, then identified the pertinent legal issues and input from all law students, the MBA students provided comments on the effect of various legal strategies on the business plan post-interview: Law students` letters were reviewed in draft by a mentor lawyer .MBA students letters` were reviewd by the director.
8. Clinical environment The clinical environment was novel for the students in two ways : 1. they were required to interact with clients 2.they formed an analytical team with a student from another discipline.
9. Infant car seat The client,an engineer had designed a new infant car seat,the client presented a prototype car seat and draft business plan to the students for their review The legal review identified a critical element missing from the business plan: a regulatory review Althogh the business was not successful the clinic project did save the great deal of time, money and frustration in trying to get this product to market
