A board game to practice Indonesian greetings and, possibly, telling the time. This game will reinforce students' awareness of how time is generally divided in Indonesia.

Materials Coins and counters
STEP 1
Ensure that students know the four greetings
used in Indonesian: Selamat pagi, selamat siang,
selamat sore/petang, selamat malam.

STEP 2
Review how times are usually formatted. In this
game, the 24-hour clock is used.

STEP 3
Tell students that they are going to play a
boardgame. They have reach the “Selesai” box
by making appropriate greetings based on the
times shown in each box. To move their
counters, they have to flip a coin. Whatever
coin you decide on using, make sure that one
side means one step forward and the other is
two steps forward. For example: head means one
step forward and tail means two steps. Make an
agreement with your class.

STEP 4
Divide student into groups of 3-4. Give each
group a copy of the boardgame, a coin,
counters.

STEP 5
Allow time for students to play. Monitor and

If you only have a few students in your class, the following idea might be of help.
1. Copy the board game on to thicker paper.
2. Cut the boxes out of the board game so that you will have individual cards.
3. Do Step 1 and Step 2 as above.
4. Spread the cards evenly on the desk. Put them face down so that students cannot see the writing.
5.Tell students that they have to give you an appropriate greeting based on the time they see.To model
it, pick up a card and turn it over; see who gives you the quickest response.The quickest student with
the correct greeting can keep the card as tricks.
