know that they live in

4. The individual members of a termite colony
have an organized system to seek out
cellulose to be used as food and distributed to
the entire colony. Scientists who study insects
often refer to this as swarm intelligence.

5. The workers are at the lowest end of the social
scale. They usually have light colored bodies
and are about the size of a piece of long grain
rice. The workers are hard at it 24 hours a day
and are in charge of finding food, tending to

and have longer heads with powerful jaws.
They are called soldiers because their job is

7. The reproductive female and male termites
have the job of producing more and more
eggs to keep up the population of the
colony. They normally have wings and may

belongs to the queen termite, which is also the
largest. In fact the queen can be so large that
she needs the help of worker termites just to
move around. The queen also lays the most
