2. Alice de Vergy (1182 – 1251)
• Duchess of Burgundy, and Regent of Burgundy from
1218 – 1228.
• A major patron of the arts and of religious communities
across Burgundy.
• Long-resided in Lantenay, in the medieval Estate which
covered the same lands as the modern property, and
which Alice de Vergy “well-loved”. The ruins of the
medieval Château extend into today’s Estate.
3. The Bouhiers de Lantenay
• A prominent family between the 16th c. and the French
Revolution, which left a rich legacy across Dijon, Lantenay,
and Burgundy.
• Possessed “titre de Seigneurie” (feudal Lordship) over
Lantenay and resided in the Estate, a “former domain of the
Dukes of Burgundy”.
• The Bouhier family constructed the Château de Lantenay
across 3 generations.
• The modern-day regional government of Bourgogne-
Franche-Comté is headquartered in the Hotel Particulier

4. Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807 –
1882)
• Legendary general and statesman who played a
leading role in the unification of Italy.
• Pledged his support to the French Republic during the
Franco-Prussian War of 1870—1871, during which he
led the volunteer Army of the Vosges and organized the
defense of Dijon.
• During this campaign, Garibaldi established his base of
operations in Lantenay and personal headquarters in
Château de Lantenay.
• Most likely directed operations from what is today the
Grand Suite’s office room.

5. Marius Duché (born 1841)
• As a consequence of the coup in 1851 and Napoleon III’s
ascension as Emperor of France in 1852, J.B. Marius Duché’s father
went into exile in England alongside 49 other members of the
French Parliament, including Victor Hugo.
• At the age of 12, Marius Duché reunited with his father in England,
where they founded a family business.
• Marius Duché grew the business to multinational scale, with offices
in London, Glasgow, Manchester, Buenos Aires, New York, and
Paris. He became the founding vice-president of the Franco-
English Chamber of Commerce in London in 1883, as well as its
President from 1890 to 1909.
• Entirely restored, renovated, and redecorated the Chateâu in 1893,
installing cutting-edge technologies – including some of the
earliest modern, centralized plumbing and heating systems.
• A major benefactor of Lantenay, Marius Duché built the village’s
school & library, Town Hall, original post office, as well as the local
train station.
