2. Gender is represented the most within my media video. I have represented the two
genders in a typically stereotypical way, with the female being vulnerable and
objectified, and the male being over powering and strong.
FEMALE CHARACTER
My female character has been objectified a lot within my video (so much so that it
had to be changed from my original plan). It is typical that in film, and society, that
the female form is objectified by men, so this lead me to objectifying my female. We
can see this objectification present in the woods and on the beach.
Women are also seen to be weak and vulnerable, having my female character run
through the woods alone in the evening shows that she could be at risk off attack.
A young female is stereotypically weak, however we decided to go against this and
give my female character some strength. We can see this within the fight seen
when the female character kicks the male in the face, so even though she is
vulnerable, she does pack a punch. As a result this shows how the female gender
are changing, becoming stronger, and although they are objectified still, the do
now have power. All of which are shown within my video.
3. MALE CHARACTER
My male character has a lot of strength and power that can be seen within my video.
Attacking my female character shows how the male gender have a more dominant
personality than women. He attacks her within the woodlands, this shows that he not
only has the strength to over power and kill, but also the cunningness to find a spot
where she will be most vulnerable. With none else in the woods it is the perfect place
to attack somebody, and because of this my male character does so.
In my video I have been able to show a very patriarchal society. Creating a
strong, dominant and overpower male character helps to portray the kind of society
that we live in, however to a more extravagant effect. A large proportion of the male
gender are seen to be bullies, this is shown in my film with the killing of the innocent
female character.
4. Within society today, young people are seen to be violent and aggressive. This is how
they are also shown within my video. I thought that I should follow the stereotypes of
the types of people within society so that my audience can relate to them. I have
been able to show this violence through the murder of an innocent female character.
Thousands of young people die every year, because of this I decided to incorporate
this into my video to show how vile some people can be. Representing young people
like this is what the general assumption of these teens is like. Expressing this view, I
have been able to follow the opposition theory, of which in my video the opposites
are the man and the woman.
When I did my questionnaire I found out that the majority of people that would watch
my video were between the ages of 16 and 17. Because I was able to find this piece
of information out I was then able to adapt my video to a way that they would want
to see it. They would be a vital part of my audience so attracting them is key, from
the survey I was also able to discover what it was these teenagers wanted to see in
my thriller. So from these ideas I could adapt my video and attract this audience.
Seeing this video the young audience that I have attracted would spread my
video, helping to attract a larger audience.
5. Although I haven’t included any one from an ethnically background it doesn’t mean to say
that I couldn’t of included them. I could easily have changed my cast to included someone
from an ethical background or even perhaps bring in additional characters. All of the
characters in my video are white, this wasn’t done for any particular reason than the fact that
the area that I live in (Devon) still hasn’t become part of the ethical society that the rest of
the United Kingdom is living in. This means that there aren’t as many people from ethical
backgrounds living here and therefore it would have been tricky to be able to use them in
my video. Because of this I haven’t really had the opportunity to represent ethnicities within
my thriller opening.
6. In the first introduction of my male character we can see that he is carrying a digital slr
camera. This helps us to see what kind of social class he lives in. This digital camera shows
us that the character obviously has some money behind him and as a result of this we can
see that he belongs to the C1C2 group. This interpretation is back up through the clothing
that he wears.
From our video it is hard to tell which social group my female character belongs to because
there are not really any clues that allows us to make a judgement on this. The only thing
that we have to be able to make a decision is her clothing and this doesn’t really give us
any clues. Because the character is out jogging, she is wearing clothing that is of a lose
fit, and not really anything special. So as a result we are unable to come to a conclusion of
which social group she belongs to.
