4. INTRODUCTION
• As a result of technological advances,
distance education for nurses is
flourishing in 21st century. The
technological advancements refined the
educational system and approaches.
Distance education act as a blessing to
all nurses to continue their education
and update their skills in their work
setting with limited costs.
5. DEFINITION:
• Distance Education is defined as any
learning experiences that takes place a
distance away from parent, Institution,
Home and campus.
6. NURSING DISTANCE
EDUCATION
• Distance Education (DE), also known as
distributed learning, uses a wide range of
computing and communications
technologies to provide learning
opportunities beyond the time and place
constraints of traditional classroom. (The
CSU Center for Distributed Learning, 2004).
• DE also meets the needs of students who
prefer more independence in their
learning. (Leasure, Davis, & Thievon, 2000)
7. AIMS:
It aims not only providing the certificate and degree but also
helps in personal growth in training for better job.
Bring changes in attitude and knowledge.
Provide flexibility of time ,we can study according to our
convinience.
Make education socially more relevant,as we are not fix to the
time.
8. OBJECTIVES
Objectives provide an efficient and less
expensive method
Pursue higher education to all qualified
and willing persons
Provide opportunities of academic
pursuits to educated citizens through
correspondence instruction without
disturbing their present employment.
9. PURPOSES:
• Distance education is first choice of learner-
Those students who has no institute in their
locality or neighbourhood and the student
who are unable to join classes regularly.
• Distance education provide open learning
system-
It helps our or developing countries for
achieving their compulsory education target.
• Developing Skills-
The distance learning helps student in
imparting like self-study , good time and
recourse management and independent
problem solving
13. Synchronous
Approach
• The participants in the same
space at the same time in order
to attend to the material of
teaching. All the students should
assemble before the TV or
Broadcast to receive
instructional material. It is more
closure to traditional class room.
14. Asynchronous
Approach:
• The instruction is delivered at
different points of time usually
recorded videos, print materials etc.
Learners have freedom to receive
the instruction at their own time,
space and pace.
15. INSTRUCTIONAL
DELIVERY SYSTEMS IN
DISTANCE EDUCATION
Self-directed and Independent Study
Correspondence
Satellite
Broadcast
Video conferencing
Computer based automated response system
16. WHY DISTANCE
EDUCATION IN
NURSING?
• Nurses have many different motivations for
attaining or furthering their education using
DE modalities.
• Nurses identified travelling long distances to
campus based courses as a major barrier to
further education, in addition to geographical
barriers, work, and family obligations. (White,
Roberts, & Brannan, 2003 ).
• Distance technology makes it cost effective to
run smaller, more specialized classes which
enhance the quality of learning.
• Fortunately, the advent of technology has
expanded the capacity of educational
institutions to reach far beyond their
geographical areas.
• The increase use of technology in education
may increase access and ultimately lower the
cost of education. (AACN, 1999).
17. SCOPE OF DISTANCE EDUCATION IN NURSING:
Online degree programs in nursing have multiplied rapidly in recent years.
In a 1998 survey conducted by AACN, 51% on nursing schools reported they
were engaged in some form of DE
BSN, MSN, and MSN in many advanced practice majors are available online
today
Numerous online doctoral programs also exist, including complete or partial
(PhD) programs at respected universities.
18. How Can Quality In Distance Education Be
Assured?
Seven principles of best practice and corresponding lessons for
online education:
1) Good practice encourages students-faculty contact.
2) Good practice encourages cooperation among students.
3) Good practice encourages use of active learning
techniques.
4) Good practice gives prompt feedback.
5) Good practice emphasizes time on task.
6) Good practice communicates high expectations.
7) Good practice respects diverse talents and ways of
learning.
19. Standards for
Distance Education
Nursing Programs
1. Student outcomes are consistent
with the stated mission, goals, and
objectives of the program.
2. The institution assumes the
responsibility for establishing a
means to assess student outcomes.
3. Mechanisms for ongoing faculty
development and involvement in the
area of distance learning and the use
of technology in the teaching-
learning process are established.
20. ADVANTAGES:
• It is flexible education system which is not
bounded by time and place
• Under this system learner can progress at his
own speed
• It leads to self-learning
• It can reach the remote areas through postal
services or radio or T.V
• It is economical method of teaching
• It provides high education accessible to all
sections of society
• It can supplement the studies of regular
students
21. DISADVANTAGES:
• This system don’t make aware of people for cultural changes
and social development
• Scope of practical experiences is negligible
• The study centre and book banks is rare
• The writing material is provided by post but lot of information is
not possible for radios and T.V
• The teacher is unable to understand where student have
understood the topic or not.
