Definitions – Code of Conduct

    Definition 1*:
A Code of conduct is a set of rules outlining the
responsibilities of or proper practices for an
individual or organisation. Related concepts include
    ethical codes and honour codes.
    Definition 2**:
Principles, values, standards, or rules of behavior
that guide the decisions, procedures and systems of
an organization in a way that (a) contributes to the

Guidance, Defining and Developing an Effective Code of Conduct for Organizations, (2007)
Key elements of the Code of Conduct

• Introductory statement
• Respect for others
• Protection of children
• Personal and professional conduct
• Protection of self & others
• Protection of assets & resources
• Reporting incidents & concerns

5
Scenario
You notice your friend is being teased by a group of staff
members. It has been going on for a while and your friend is
becoming withdrawn and seems to have lost her confidence.

There is one male member of the group who keeps on touching
your colleague, on her arms, lower back and knees, and
making jokes full of sexual innuendo. He doesn’t seem to
notice how uncomfortable his behaviour is making your
colleague.

One day, you find your colleague very
upset outside the office, she will not tell
you what is the matter. Inside the male
member of staff is laughing out loud and
keeps on saying how ‘easy’ (slutty) your
friend is.
What do you do?
Is this a breach of the Code of Conduct?
Are there any consequences be for the
6

staff members involved?
I should have learnt this…….

• I can list all the global policies
• I can tell the difference between the Child
Safeguarding Code of Conduct and the Code of
  Conduct
• I can link the sections from the Code of Conduct
  to the relevant global policies
• I know and can act in line with my
responsibility to report breaches of the Code of
  Conduct
• I can report an incident/suspected incident
7 using the Whistle-blowing policy
Learning Objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will be
  able to:
• Describe their responsibilities under the Code of
  Conduct
• Link the global policies to the Code of Conduct
• Recognise and judge behaviour that are in breach
  of the Code of Conduct
