Växjö in Sweden has a long history of environmental leadership and was awarded the 2018 European Green Leaf Award. Key steps in the past include lake restoration in the 1970s, investing in renewable energy in the 1980s, and collaborating locally and internationally in the 1990s. Växjö has set ambitious climate targets to reduce fossil CO2 emissions 65% by 2020 and 100% by 2030 compared to 1993 levels. Through sorting organic waste, all city buses have run on biogas since 2013. The municipality promotes cycling, walking and public transit to reduce car use to 62% of trips in 2012. Växjö is now working towards the UN's 17 sustainability targets through their new Programme for Sustainable Development to
