4. “Kick the Habit” – A UN
Guide to Climate
Neutrality
In 2008 UN launched “Kick the
Habit” - A UN guide to climate
neutrality, signed by the Secretary
General.
The guide describes how the UN
itself, countries, counties, cities and
private companies can be climate
neutral.
The UN guidelines has been
endorsed by the Norwegian
Consumer Ombudsman, and the
Ombudsman has submitted
guidelines on who has the right to
call themselves climate neutral in
Norway under the law of marketing.
The method for climate neutrality described in “Kick the Habit” is illustrated in the
figure above:
1. Prepare your climate footprint. The guide recommend to use the method
described in the Green House Gas (GHG) protocol developed by the World
Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable
Development (WBCSD). The GHG protocol makes it clear what is mandatory
to include in the footprint (Scope 1 and 2), and what is voluntary (Scope 3).
2. Prepare an emission reduction plan and set short term and long term
reduction goals.
3. Compensate remaining emissions by purchase of offsets (CERs).
4. Communicate your achievements and be transparent on footprint and
reduction plan.
5. Evaluate you results on an annual basis
6. Repeat 1-5 above annually
