But exactly what does that
survey need to accomplish?
Surveys don’t just happen – at
least, they shouldn’t.
Planning a successful survey takes
thoughtful preparation, execution,
and follow through.
Sound like a lot?
We can help.
Begin with the end in mind,
says author Stephen Covey.
Beyond advice for only Highly
Effective People, this advice
suits survey development.
Think about the end –
You’re not just trying to be
done, but to reach some kind
of understanding, right?
Otherwise, what’s the point?
What is your point?
If your goal is “obtain data” or “run
the numbers”, you haven’t put in
the work.
“Data-driven decisions”
is just jargon when it’s an
empty idea.
You might as well shift
paradigms or build synergy…
Worse:
If you’re just running a survey to
check a box, that’s not compliance.
That’s probably just wasting
everyone’s time.
The end goal of
any survey activity should be
to strengthen an existing
relationship or to start a new
relationship.
When you don’t have a goal
beyond collecting data, your
survey will fail.

  • 2. You’ve decided that you’ve got a need a survey can fill. But exactly what does that survey need to accomplish?
  • 3. Surveys don’t just happen – at least, they shouldn’t. Planning a successful survey takes thoughtful preparation, execution, and follow through.
  • 4. Sound like a lot? We can help.
  • 5. Begin with the end in mind, says author Stephen Covey. Beyond advice for only Highly Effective People, this advice suits survey development.
  • 6. Think about the end – You’re not just trying to be done, but to reach some kind of understanding, right? Otherwise, what’s the point?
  • 7. What is your point? If your goal is “obtain data” or “run the numbers”, you haven’t put in the work.
  • 8. “Data-driven decisions” is just jargon when it’s an empty idea. You might as well shift paradigms or build synergy…
  • 9. Worse: If you’re just running a survey to check a box, that’s not compliance. That’s probably just wasting everyone’s time.
  • 10. The end goal of any survey activity should be to strengthen an existing relationship or to start a new relationship.
  • 11. When you don’t have a goal beyond collecting data, your survey will fail. Key problems: Trust Deficit Gi-Go-it-is Tunnel Vision
