For almost a decade, we’ve gotten used to promoting IBM Connections as the ultimate all-in-one collaboration platform. Now, we need to explain how Box, Cisco Spark, Cisco WebEx and Watson Workspace fit in, without losing credibility. This session offers an effective and easy-to-understand way of doing just that, a way you easily can take home to use yourselves. Bonus: the illustration helps portray the competition too.

Learn from mistakes, preferably those of others.
Stupid mistakes are those you repeat
When IBM announced the partnership with Box, I got confused. I believe I was not the only one. Within IBM, among our partners, our clients and in the market as a whole. Is IBM about to give up on IBM Connections or what? The confusion did not diminish when, later, the partnership with Cisco was announced, adding Cisco Spark and Cisco WebEx to our offerings.
But then I came to think of this man
Charles Darwin, the man behind the scientific theory of evolution.
The man behind the “survival of the strongest”. Or was that really what he said?
In our IT lingo, “survival of the strongest” translates into “Best of breed”. There’s one best alternative in each segment.
Just like there’s one best breed of horses, dogs, fish… Or? Right, why isn’t there just one breed of horse left, of dog or fish?
Maybe it wasn’t the survival of the strongest, but…
Survival of the fittest! The version that best fits the circumstances, the context…
…which in my mind translates into ”Best for need”. The need of the user is what decides which software is the best. And that may vary from person to person, from context to context and from time to time.
And in the strategy of IBM Collaboration and Talent Solutions, it translates to…
No single vendor owns the future of work.
No single vendor provides the best solution for every situation and every user.
And, with the consumerization of technology, if companies don’t provide the solutions needed by their employees, they will find them elsewhere.
Pretending that one supplier can provide everything for everybody, always is preposterous and dishonest.
And offering Hansel and Gretchen licensing solutions to lure clients in only to lock them in is the same.
So, let’s look at work, communication and collaboration from the perspective of the needs of employees
Sellers sell.
But in doing so, they produce presentations, proposals and similar documents filled with knowledge of their own and of others. They communicate with colleagues, customers and partners. And they keep working on improving their selling skills and knowledge about their customers, their needs, about competition and their own offerings
Bankers manage money.
In their efforts to manage money and risk for their clients or their employer, they rely on reports and intelligence compiled by others as well as produce their own. They communicate and collaborate with colleagues and external partners in assessing markets and risk. They produce reports and agreements. They may work in teams of specialists or of people serving certain clients or markets
Managers manage people.
And they both read, compile and produce reports. They create presentations, design and execute processes. They forecast and create strategies. They guide, encourage and hold people accountable. They build and nurture teams. Managers coordinate direction and efforts.
Whatever we do for work, we have some things in common
We combine knowledge and experience – own and of others – into online of offline documents or presentations. Usually, we rely on input and inspiration from others in addition to our own contribution. We design or execute processes.
In addition, we are on a constant path to develop our professional skills.
I have used a capital W to emphasize that we’re talking about work here, not just socializing (a too common misconception, especially by upper management)
One strand of this NetWorking and Collaboration is focused on teams and collaboration, i.e. on working ”within the box” with a known group of people, for a short or longer period of time. With more or less structure. But still with a known group of people, usually to reach a set goal.
This is where most of the IT solutions on the market have their focus
The benefits of good tools for collaborating in teams are all about efficiency. About reducing duplication of communication, of reducing confusion about which version is the latest, which one to use. It’s about reaching defined results sooner, with less effort.
Nice, easy and measurable.
But does it build companies, make people engaged or generate ideas and innovation. Or is it just more of the same, but sooner or easier?
The other strand is about working transparently, of sharing and caring. Working out Loud, as it is often called.
A significant difference from Team & Collaboration is that you share with anyone, not only with people you already know, or with a defined group. And it might not always be clear why you share. It’s more of “it could be useful for someone, someday”, ”I’d think this is important for people to know or be aware of”.
An essential aspect on this side of the pie chart is ”Finding people who know what you don’t”. How many times have you thought “if only I could find someone who has done this before? Or someone to help me on this. I don’t know anybody already who does”
This also the ideal arena for accidental discovery and learning. Things that drive innovation.
You may notice that the benefits of Networking and Transparency (bottom left) are about effectiveness. Of growth, innovation, development and engagement. You don’t get that from just sharing files or working efficiently in a team.
Notice that the ONLY place where Enterprise Transformation happens is in the bottom left corner!
And we want to be able to do all this irrespectively of device and location, of course
This illustrates Connections Cloud, the S1 license.
Note that you not only can share and sync files. But it actually offers online creation and editing of files, on your own or together with others, simultaneously.
You could say that IBM Connections is a bit like the Defender of Enterprise Collaboration and Networking:
It’s versatile
It can take passengers
And load goods
And drive in all kinds of terrain
But is not the fastest nor fanciest car around
Orient Me filters updates based on ”people and communities I have interacted with most (and therefore are likely to be the most relevant for me)”, instead of the traditional “most recently updated at the top” or the alternative available on Facebook for example “popular in my network” (which is a step in the right direction, but still doesn’t go as far as Orient Me).
Orient Me might look similar to Delve in O365, but their logic is reverse; while Orient Me filters out noise and brings focus, Delve opens up to “my entire organization”. Delve is like drinking from the fire hose.
Occasional users get a more familiar interface, reducing the need for learning a new way to work
Internal Communications get a unified communications platform, merging the traditional editorial intranet with the platform for collaborative and transparent work and communications
IT get fewer systems to manage and pay for: Intranet, ESN and perhaps Portal
Please note that the green wedge stretches beyond the border of the pale blue Connections.
Cisco Spark indeed works in the same space of synchronous collaboration as IBM Connections, but does more than IBM Connections does. And…if you need those capabilities, Spark is best for your needs.
How they differ? Just wait for another couple of slides
With WebEx, you get the full spectrum of online meetings capabilities
So, while IBM Connections was like a Defender, Cisco Spark and WebEx are more like a Lamborghini:
Top of the line, but with a much more focused use (just one passenger and no off-road
On the file share & sync side of things, the partnership with Box offers supplementary capabilities to what Connections Files does. If you’re curious about the small wedge below the green, you’ll have to have patience a couple of slides further
Enters the Mercedes limousine
Top of its’ line, but again less versatile than the Defender
Watson Workspace might overlap with Cisco Spark, but it signifies a completely new way to think, it’s new technology and new possibilities
NOTE: Microsoft have recently announced that they intend to merge the capabilities of Skype for Business into Teams, killing Skype for Business. This is their third change of course in this area in a very short time. There has been quite some resentment among their customers about this flip-flopping
NOTE: Microsoft have recently announced that they intend to merge the capabilities of Skype for Business into Teams, killing Skype for Business. The obvious choice would be to use OneDrive to share files.
But then, why would you need a 60+ page whitepaper on where to share things in O365?
But there are a few additional places where you may share files in the O365 space. Which to use? I don’t know, I’m just as confused as most users of O365
The traditional Microsoft option for collaborating with a group of people has been SharePoint. But is it the only one? No way!
Collaboration, by the way. What is the percentage of SharePoint TeamSites that actually are more than file repositories?
