4) Mohan, a senior operator in a company has been working in an engineering firm
manufacturing shafts. He joins a workers’ union in 1989. The union has a strong
hold over the workers. Mohan was the representative of his department. Most of
his time was involved with union activities. In 1990, he was seriously injured
in a clash with his co – workers for some particular reason. He was
suspended by the management for six months. During this period, the
management, after a thorough enquiry, found out the real cause of the clash.
Under pressure from the union, Mohan was reinstated in the factory in 1991.
Mohan meanwhile continued in his own union.
Mohan resumed his duties but did not perform as well as he used to before the
clash with his co-workers. When asked by his immediate supervisor Mr.
Ramesh, to explain as to why his performance had deteriorated he said that he
could not lift heavy materials because of his injury. The supervisor tried to
motivate him to improve his performance but to no effect.
As the appointment of Mohan was made on the recommendation of Mr. Mehra,
a senior officer of the production department, Mr. Ramesh appraised him of
Mohan’s performance. A decision was taken by both the officials that Mohan be
transferred to the production department. This again had no effect on Mohan’s
performance and his attitude to work remained unchanged. He was thereafter
transferred back to his former department.
Questions:
i) Should Mohan have been transferred back to his former department?
ii) Comment upon Mr. Ramesh and Mr. Mehra’s joint decision.

Answer ALL questions

4) Mahindra and Mahindra (M & M) is a major player in the tractor and certain
segments of the automobile market in India, after an impressive growth for a
few years, the tractor market in India has been stagnating during 98-99, 2000-
01.
M & M has been selling its tractor and utility vehicles in foreign markets
including USA. Some of the components for its products have been sourced
from abroad. M & M has a 100% subsidiary in USA, Mahindra USA, with a
strong network of 100 dealers. Mahindra has a five-percent market share in the
US market in the 28-30 horse power (HP) range. As a part of the strategy aimed
at building a global supply chain, Mahindra USA has signed a memorandum of
understanding (Mou) with the Korean tractor major Tong Yang, apart of the $ 2
bn Tong Yang Moolsam group, according to which Mahindra will source high
horse power (mostly 25-40 hp range) and sell them around the world under the
M & M brand name. To start with the premium range of tractors will be sold in
the US.
M & M’s current tractor range is more utility oriented and lacks the aesthetic
appeal that Tong Yang’s tractors, have, a must for a strong presence in the US
market.
Questions:
i) What are the advantages and disadvantages of global sourcing? and
ii) What are the possible risks of the alliance? How can they be overcome /

Answer ALL questions
.
1) Describe the pricing practices of firms.
2) How is price determined under oligopoly?
3) Discuss the appraisal of proposal under capital budgeting.
4) Mr. Soma Sundaram has recently taken over as the new chief of the Marketing
division of Hilltop Refrogeratopm Ltd., a reputed manufacturer of air
conditioners of window-mount and car varieties. In the recent Board meeting
Sundaram tried to convince the Board members that at present the best way to
improve profitability of the company is through product diversification.
According to his, since it is almost always economically justifiable for the
company to expand through extending the product line, the company would do
good to start producing refrigerators, besides air-conditioners. I concede that the
refrigerator market is highly competitive and is dominated by two giants firms –
ever cool and polar bear. Both these companies are producing a variety of
refrigerators but the economy class refrigerators are their forte. It is but logical
for us to go in for the production of premium (up-scale, high price) refrigerators.
This will not only expose us to lesser competition but also fetch high profit
margins for the company. I must confess that the refrigerator sales involve
substantial discounts which vary over seasons. The MD of hilltop turned
towards the purchase manager for his opinion. He informed that, “the market
supply of good quality compressor units for the refrigerators is erratic and its
price has been found to spurt up occasionally. I believe that the refrigerator
business would be successful only when we have our own facility to produce
good quality compressors’. When the chief of the production unit asked about
his reactions was not ready to try this proposal. According to him “The
compressor production is a highly automated process. Creating compressor
production facilities in the company for the proposed refrigerator project, no
doubt, seem justified. But, there are some aspects of production which do not
justify this project. I shall study them in detail and send a detailed note to every
member within a week”.
Questions:
1. What do you think are the issues which the production manager will
highlight in this case?;
2. Can you point out some other flaws in the project proposal?; and
3. Can you suggest an alternative proposal?

In the recent Board meeting Sundaram tried to convince the Board members that at present the best way to improve profitability of the company is through product diversification. According to his, since it is almost always economically justifiable for the company to expand through extending the product line, the company would do good to start producing refrigerators, besides air-conditioners. I concede that the refrigerator market is highly competitive and is dominated by two giants firms – ever cool and polar bear. Both these companies are producing a variety of refrigerators but the economy class refrigerators are their forte. It is but logical for us to go in for the production of premium (up-scale, high price) refrigerators.
  • 9. This will not only expose us to lesser competition but also fetch high profit margins for the company. I must confess that the refrigerator sales involve substantial discounts which vary over seasons. The MD of hilltop turned towards the purchase manager for his opinion. He informed that, “the market supply of good quality compressor units for the refrigerators is erratic and its price has been found to spurt up occasionally. I believe that the refrigerator business would be successful only when we have our own facility to produce good quality compressors’. When the chief of the production unit asked about his reactions was not ready to try this proposal. According to him “The compressor production is a highly automated process. Creating compressor production facilities in the company for the proposed refrigerator project, no doubt, seem justified. But, there are some aspects of production which do not justify this project. I shall study them in detail and send a detailed note to every member within a week”. Questions: 1. What do you think are the issues which the production manager will highlight in this case?; 2. Can you point out some other flaws in the project proposal?; and 3. Can you suggest an alternative proposal? ———————
