St. chad (1)
1.
2. On the 1st December are Class Yr 6B went to St. Chad Cathedral. We went there
around 9:40am and left around 2:00pm.
When we got there at the beginning of the day we spit up in to two groups, one with
Mr Aldred and Mr Maconnell a tour guide and the other with Mr Barton and another
tour guide Mrs Pervical. I was in the second group with Mr Barton.
We first went outside and looked at the front area of the of the cathedral. We then
went into this room in the corner of the cathedral and told the story of the Cathedral
and St. Chad.
Story of St. Chad and The Cathedrel.
St. Chad was born around 634 and it is thought that he came from Northumbrian
nobility. He was one of four brothers, who were all active in the church.. Later he
travelled to Ireland where he continued his education before he was ordained as a
priest. In 664 he succeeded his brother as Abbot of the monastery at Lastingham.
Later he was ordained Bishop of York and finally he became bishop of Mercia and
Lindsey, a very large area of central England and Lincolnshire. The King of Mercia
gave him land for a monastery at Lichfield. Chad travelled great distances and carried
out much missionary and pastoral work within the kingdom. He was a very devout
and humble man and laid much emphasis on prayer and study of the scriptures. He
died in 672 on the 2nd of March.
3. We also went to the crypt and looked at all the ages of when the Hardman
children died. It was very sad because they died very young. The earliest
death was a baby who died the day they where born, the next on died the
day after they where born, a week after, a month after they where born ,
18 months after they where born, 3 years after they where born, 5 years
after they where born, 10 years after they where born and last of all 55 years
after they where born.
John Hardman helped a lot in the work of St. Chad Cathedral. They were a
rich family so they helped in paying for it all.
4. My group did not get to go and look at this but are teacher Mr Barton told
us the story.
Birmingham was once a famous place for gun making. So in the World War
the German’s thought if they can destroy Birmingham the English solider
would have less guns to fight them with. When the German’s dropped the
bomb it landed in St. Chad Cathedral and left a hole. It rolled forward and
into a radiator. Inside radiator’s there is water so when the bomb was
about to explode the water put it out. Where the bomb had came through
they put a sign on it saying it was a miri9cal.
5. The trip was wonderful and spiritual. I also enjoyed the Mass. I would love
to go there again. If I had to rate it out of 10 I would give it a 10. It was so
interesting and history is my favourite topic and there was a lot of history
in that trip so it was really educational as well.
Thank you.
