While AI holds tremendous potential for libraries, it also comes with significant concerns and the potential for harm. We find ourselves sailing uncertain waters; there are few guardrails governing AI's use. Even as we acknowledge this truth, we must also note that library staff are already experimenting with the use of AI chatbots (most commonly ChatGPT), generative AI design tools (like Midjourney), and other variations of AI technology. In short, we have great potential, pitfalls, and a total lack of clarity. It is only through the thoughtful development of policy, procedure, and professionals that we can hope to articulate a vision for the ethical use of AI in our libraries. Join this conversation about new disruptive technology, take a deep breath, and get to work laying a foundation of policy guidelines and staff development to navigate the uncertain road ahead.
This interactive and hands-on workshop allows you to play and experiment with new tools which will spark ideas for the future of your library and community activities. It focuses on OpenAI’s API and how to get started building personalities in AI. It explores various tools to create AI images, videos, and more. Filled with tips, it will definitely be fun!

Pattern Recognition
Unstructured Data
Previously, for AI to understand data, it had to be
carefully organized and tagged. Now, it can digest
unstructured data and make determinations
Self Learning
The advance machine
learning system makes
decisions by analyzing its own
data and making patterns
Learning on Examples
This method is used when a
machine learns through
examples. For instance,

Challenges for AI
Training
Similar to having good data, an AI
might need to learn the correct
response for the correct situation or
identify dangers or inappropriate
interactions
Precision

garbage data out. If you flood
an AI with bad data and don’t
set the proper syntax or
thresholds you will get
incoherent results
Context
AI’s can struggle with understanding context. For
example, asking Siri ”call me an ambulance” may yield
“OK, from now on, I will call you Ambulance”

Tay (Thinking About You)
Released on March 23 2016 via Twitter, Tay (as
TayTweets on Twitter) was designed to mimic the
interactions of 19 year old girl through learned
conversations on Twitter.
Users began tweeting politically incorrect phrases to Tay,
and thus, Tay responded and answered with the learned
inappropriate behavior – as it was it was not taught what
the difference between Good Language and Bad
Language was.

How Does Generative AI Work?
• Training Data: Generative AI models are trained on a dataset of desired
content.
• Generator Network: Creates new data from random input.
• Iterative Learning: Continuous model adjustments during training to
improve data generation.
• Sampling: Utilizes the trained model to generate new data samples

It was easy to tell what was AI generated and
what wasn’t – through word choice or if that
text resembles anything in existence. Early
AI detection methods worked with high
accuracy.

Now, there has been more content ever
created generated by AI … thus when an AI

Some Thoughts
Dark Side of AI In Security
• Can use tools like ChatGPT or similar to look at weak
code and ask how to fix it … in hopes of tricking the AI
to provide entry points
• Remember how easy it was to see a malicious email
because of grammar or spelling errors? AI fixes that
(even tools like Grammarly have been helping)
• Ai digests a vast amount of information and can write
official looking emails posing as a leader of the college.
• It also can provide harder to find details of staff that
may be informative enough to answer security
questions, etc.

Trained Data with Personalities
1.Temperature:
1.This controls the randomness of the model's responses.
2.Lower temperature (e.g., 0.0) means more predictable and
conservative responses.
3.Higher temperature (e.g., 1.0) makes responses more creative and less
predictable.
2.Frequency Penalty:
1.This reduces the model's likelihood of repeating the same line of
thought or content.
2.A higher frequency penalty discourages repetition.
3.A value of 0 means no penalty for repetition.
3.Presence Penalty:
1.This affects the likelihood of introducing new concepts or topics in the
response.
2.A higher presence penalty encourages the model to talk about new
things.
3.A value of 0 means no emphasis on new content.
Providing Context: You can include specific instructions or context in your
prompt. For example, "Act like a friendly and knowledgeable assistant" sets
a tone and character for the model's responses.

And How We Use It
Other Forms of AI
Optical Character Recognition
Think of how a picture of your license plate
allows a machine to translate that to text and
run a query to determine who violated a toll.
Also see this in scanners that can take an
image and convert this to text.
Consider how you can take a photo of another
language and have it translate to yours
Advance User Preferences
This is the concept of an AI providing solutions
based on historic user’s preferences and
comparing it to similar users.
Compare how Amazon or Netflix makes
recommendations based on your purchases or
views – or even how Amazon guesses when
you might run out of a specific product.
Sensory Data Analysis
Your wearables that detect heart rate for
instance can determine without user
intervention if you are working out and even
what kind of work out such as jogging or
bicycling.

One area that I've found extremely beneficial with Ai is to leverage it to get in front of IT Security issues.
I've led multiple IT teams and know that trying to keep track of all the vulnerabilities, review all the logs, and really monitor and lock down all the users of the network is near impossible. It would take an army to be really good at it..
But Tools such as DarkTrace, Cylance, Sentinel One, offer Ai based tool sets that do just this with realtime monitoring to keep your network secure and get in front of various issues that may occur.
Tool that we use at IVCC
We have DarkTrace implemented at IVCC and the toolset leverages Ai to trend and analyze user behavior and alert when uncharacteristic patterns occur for a specific user. And at times lock down those activities.
Talk about how it can leverage Ai in examples, like email sending or file copying etc.
Just run with this one.. and talk about how Ai can harvest data and that you should keep your data secure.
Talk about editing Website Content and using the NoRobots.txt file to prevent being indexed by Ai.. Also using the Meta Tag of NoIndex to tall bots to not index specific content on your website.
Some websites that exist do not have this and there entire site is being indexed by Ai and Search Engines which can make hacking even easier.

As always we've been leveraging Ai in our homes for years now.. It just continues to get smarter as Ai evolves.. But Amazon Alexa has been our Digital Assistant for years and was one of the first Digital Assistants to come out close to a decade ago now. Things have move quickly and so many competitors have come and gone since.. Even during this time if you installed a NEST thermostat in your house it uses Ai to determine your personal preferences and adjusts your thermostat through learning how and when you adjust your thermostat to different temps .. Then it automatically runs its.. Some much more evolution is coming from turning lights automatically on etc. And many of these are already here.
which comes in a variety of types such as Care Bot that can measure blood pressure, heart rate, remind users to take medicine, and even support video calls when there is an emergency. Or the Samsung Bot Retail which in a library setting can potentially guide users to find the items they need through facial and object recognition. It can even deliver items to the user!
The concept of autonomous flying vehicles isn’t just for human passengers but can be applied to transport many other things such as medical supplies, packages, food delivery and more. Companies are actively investigating this technology as a way to deliver same-day packages or regularly send supplies to remote locations without a pilot. These are a real possibility in the next decade.
So really you want to think whats next with Ai.. What are the challenges what can you do with it, what should you not do with it?

You really want to take time to think through what your approach will be now with Ai, but also be open to change.. As just like we discussed at the beginning of this presentation.. The stance on Ai will change, you may want to prevent it now, but that’s an impossible task to undertake forever.. As usage of Ai grows understanding how Ai can fit into your classes, your usage in the school will be critical. This is no different then how online schooling wasn't accepted when it first came out, this is no different when the internet first came out and everyone was against using it as a source for papers..
There are tons of Challenges and ethical dilemmas that will occur with Ai. As much as I'd love to say you'll be able to run away from them, the only answer is for how long? As Ai continues to evolve there is wide speculation that it will be harder and harder to detect.. As mentioned earlier there is an exponential growth in data storage even over the last decade, since everyone seems to be leveraging Ai to develop new content.. It will be blended into iterations of itself and soon there is an anticipate Ai will become almost indistinguishable from originally generated content.
Along with this Security will continue to become harder and harder to combat, as I anticipate in the future if not already, Hackers will develop there own Ai that will help them navigate security vulnerabilities faster, figure out how to exploit a persons network quicker and generally make combatting Ai with Ai a topic of discussion soon.
Not to say everything is good or bad about Ai.. But the goal is to shift your focus..
Leverage Ai in a meaningful and supportive way.. Make more mundane tasks easier/efficient or even eliminate them. It's also a great way to check accuracy but also not a great way..
Remember Not all Ai is good .. Its only as good as the Data it has been provided.. If you curate the data going into the Ai you've chosen to use you have the power to make it extremely helpful.
Last but not least I look at Ai as a way to make your life more rewarding, freeing you up to work on that’s deep thought tasks that take time to resolve and are only enhanced even more by putting the additional effort and attention into them as only you can do.
