Common Roots Vermont - Healthy Food, Healthy Kids, Healthy FarmsRobert Fish
Common Roots connects farmers, educators, youth, families, and the wider community in building a sustainable future through place-based education and service programs. By collectively growing food for our schools, families, and food shelves, we celebrate the soil and soul of community. Our stewardship provides food security, affirms our local environment, and nurtures our common roots.
With appreciation to Lindie Rheeder, for creating this presentation as part of her UVM Food Systems Internship experience, Winter Session, December 2015–January 2016.
This article takes on the question of how to be sustainable in Hawai’i when a majority of our food is brought here. For the purpose of answering their questions on this topic they even conducted interviews and surveys.
Participant Melissa DeSa of Florida Certified Organic Growers and Consumers, Inc. shared this summary of the conference she put together for her community. It highlights the garden tours, speaker highlights and general information about the conference for those unable to attend. Share it around and thanks Melissa!

WORKSHEET 3.1A Statement of Need QuestionnaireUse the filled.docxambersalomon88660
WORKSHEET 3.1A: Statement of Need Questionnaire
Use the filled-out Worksheet 3.1B in the book as an example to follow as you complete this questionnaire.
Who? Where? When?
What? Why?
Evidence of Problem
Impact If Problem Is Resolved?
Who is in need
(people, animals, land, etc.)?
The community of children whose parents undergoing cancer treatment are in need of the services the Children’s Academy of Pinellas has to offer. Expanding the childcare program to include complimentary nutritious meals will not only encourage proper nutrition for children of the academy, but help alleviate some of the parental or caregiver stress that often accompanies those undergoing cancer treatment.
Where are they?
The population of children being served at the Children’s Care Academy live within the central west portion of Pinellas County, Florida.
When is the need evident?
Children can be at the academy for several hours a day, often during breakfast, lunch and or dinner times, requiring the need for children to receive a nutritious meal. Some parents may not have the time, energy or financial means to provide nourishing food for their children during their stay at the academy. The need is evident for each child as long as the parent or caregiver is undergoing cancer treatment.
What is the need?
The need for expanding the outreach program is two-fold; to ensure children are receiving nutritious meals and to help ease some parental responsibilties while undergoing cancer treatment. Many parents or caregivers do not have family members or friends available to help care for children during time-consuming cancer treatment sessions. Traditional daycare facilities are fashioned to accommodate working parents requiring payment for services on a continual basis regardless of how often the children attend. Daycare facilities are also very expensive and do not provide nutritious food programs on a complimentary basis. The Children’s Care Academy is designed to care for children coinciding with treatment schedules on a complimentary basis.
Pinellas County is home to a large population of single-working parents struggling to make ends meet. Single families generally face greater challenges in everyday life with less income and less family support. Demanding cancer treatment schedules can further complicate the single-family structure resulting in an even greater need for the resources offered by the Children’s Care Academy of Pinellas.
Why does this need exist?
Parents or caregivers undergoing cancer treatment face a multitude of challenges. Those undergoing treatment become all consumed with vigorous treatment schedules and learning to deal with the aftermath of some of the physical and emotional side effects resulting from treatment. Treatments such as radiation and chemotherpay can take a toll on the body resulting in nausea, vomiting, weakness, loss of appetite and fatigue; leaving little energy to perform even the easiest tasks at home, such as prepari.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. WITH HAWAII ISLAND SCHOOL GARDEN NETWORK
ON MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. ‘DAY OF SERVICE’
Physicians and Staff Invite Community To Join Them at Mala’ai and Kahakai
Elementary School Gardens To Support ‘Healthy Eating, Active Living’
Prescription for 2011
Hawaii Island, January 4, 2011 – Kaiser Permanente Hawaii physicians and clinic staff will set
aside their sterile medical garb, equipment and working environment and, instead, get down and
dirty working in the dirt – volunteering in Hawaii Island school gardens to celebrate the 25th
Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. “Day of Service” on Mon., Jan. 17, 2011.
In doing so, they hope to practice what they preach daily to patients via their “HEAL”
prescription for “Healthy Eating, Active Living.”
Partnering with the Hawaii Island School Garden Network (HISGN), Kaiser Permanente Hawaii
physicians, providers and staff are inviting school and community friends to join them from 8:30
a.m. to 1 p.m., Mon., Jan. 17 at Mala’ai: The Culinary Garden of Waimea Middle School,
Kahakai Elementary School, and Hilo High School. Participants will weed, prune, work compost
piles and lend a hand in countless other ways to nurture sustainable learning gardens and a
healthier lifestyle for the new year.
This is the second year Kaiser Permanente’s medical professionals are “walking the walk” of
their “HEAL” prescription for patients and the community at large on Hawaii Island, Maui and
Oahu.
In addition to learning about the pleasure and benefits of gardening, the day’s activities will
include games to reinforce Kaiser Permanent’s statewide 5-2-1-0 nutrition program to combat
childhood obesity through public awareness and education. The 5-2-1-0 program encourages 5

RSVP by January 12 by calling Nancy Redfeather (322-2801) or emailing
nredfeather@kohalacenter.org.
Tools, gloves, sunscreen and drinking water will be provided. Participants should wear
comfortable clothing suitable for getting dirty and wear closed shoes. This is a zero waste event

About Hawaii Island School Garden Network
The goal of the Hawaii Island School Garden Network (HISGN) is to help island schools build
gardening and agricultural programs to significantly increase consumption of, and access to,
locally produced food by involving students, their school communities, and their family networks
in fresh food production. HISGN is one of The Kohala Center’s self-reliance initiatives. Visit

outdoor living classroom, Mala’ai’s mission is to deepen Waimea Middle School students’
relationship with food, their culture, and their environment by creating and sustaining an organic
garden and kitchen classroom that engages them in all aspects of growing, harvesting,
preparing and sharing nourishing, healthy food. Ultimately, the program intends for all food
served at the school to be wholesome, fresh, delicious and just. Mala’ai, a not-for-profit working
in partnership with Waimea Middle Public Conversion Charter School, is financially supported
by community friends, donors and volunteers. Visit www.malaai.org to learn more about getting
involved in this project and about the still-new Waimea Crop Share, funded in part by Kaiser
Permanente, The Kohala Center and West Hawai’i Fund, to share surplus fresh produce grown
in back yards, local farms and at the school garden – from 12:30-3 p.m., Saturdays, Jan. 15, 22
and 29, 2011 at Mala’ai.
About Kahakai Elementary’s School Garden
The Kahakai School Garden was founded many years ago by Principal Jessica Yamazawa with
the help of the Kona Young Farmers. Today, there are 2 garden sites. One is a
teaching/market garden and the other site is the future theater, butterfly house and native
garden that is under construction. The Kahakai 5th Grade hosts a Student Farmer’s Market
every Wednesday morning before school.
About Hilo High School’s Garden
The Hilo High School Agriculture Program is a wonderful, sprawling series of terraced gardens
located at the back of the Hilo High School campus. Science teacher Steve Nemeth teaches a
variety of agricultural science electives. The gardens hold an impressive diversity of native
plants, fruit trees, herbs, and food crops. Of particular interest is the Hawaiian endemic garden
featuring pre-contact plants as well as a canoe garden cultivated with plants and trees brought
to Hawaii by early voyagers. There are also income crops and an impressive collection of
citrus. Nemeth shares with his students his vast wealth of knowledge of the cultural, nutritional
and medicinal uses of native plants. The program also utilizes aquaponics and hydroponics
systems, which are student maintained.

About Martin Luther King Day of Service
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What
are you doing for others?'
Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King
Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. Visit www.mlkday.gov/ for more information
and to find a “Day of Service” event in your community.
