Zonguldak is a city located in northern Turkey on the Black Sea coast. It is an important port and mining center, famous for its coal mines. The name Zonguldak likely comes from "Zone Geul-Dagh", which was the name given to the area by French and Belgian mining companies in reference to Göldağı Mountain near Devrek. Coal mining in the Ereğli region, near Zonguldak, began in the early 19th century under Ottoman rule. Zonguldak has an oceanic climate with heavy rainfall year-round. Local cuisine features foods made from chestnuts, berries, and grains as well as dishes incorporating seasonal vegetables and meats.
