Open Innovation is an emerging pattern of collaboration, innovation, and production.
At its core is the understanding that in a world of increasingly distributed knowledge,
leveraging solutions developed by experts in the field, wherever they may be, brings
benefits that are extremely valuable to an organization.
Online communities and platforms have been developed to facilitate those inward
and outward transfers of knowledge. NineSigma is the leader in Open Innovation

The first step in the creation of an open-innovation project is to
identify and articulate a major industry obstacle. The need should
resonate across the company’s industry.
Challenges can be practical, such as creating an easy-to-install
water pump for developing countries. Or a challenge can be critical
to solving an even bigger challenge—for example, isolating and
stabilizing a protein that may hold the key to an effective AIDS
vaccine.

in the first rounds, and fewer participants receiving larger grants
in the subsequent rounds.

single grant to assist in establishing and commercializing its
technology. Each milestone for submissions, judging, and award
is an opportunity to bring attention to the project and for a

A total sum of more than USD 28M in Grand Challenge prize money (the
largest challenges on the platform) has been offered on NineSigma in
2014.
Prize money is an incentive to attract technologists and scientists to the
competition, but it is not the only one. Finding a home for a solution that
they have developed, recognition for their advancement, interactions with
business advisors, funders and peer technologists are also essential.
