Duties: Support emerging materials engineering group with all inquiries related to chemical analysis.
Perform basic chemical analysis on unknown deposits including FTIR/SEM/ICP analysis.
Chemical exposure tests and identification of various polymers using instrumentation listed
above. Collaborate with external labs for further testing. Screen incoming chemicals for
safety compliance. Give educational presentations on chemical topics related to after
treatment systems in diesel engines.
Work experience: Gained hands on experience with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
Leadership skills in unique opportunity to develop a materials lab. Gained a working
knowledge of the selective catalyticreduction process. Determining root cause analysis of
deposit formation in after treatment systems.
Albany Molecular Research Incorporated
AMRI is a scientific contract company that provides fully integrated drug discovery, development
and manufacturing services for various companies.
Dates: May 31st
2012-Oct. 9th
2012.
Location: Eli-Lilly Inc. Indianapolis, IN
Position: Research Scientist Level 1
Manager: Alan Henderson
Contact: Alan.Henderson@amriglobal.com
Duties: Synthesized known compounds efficiently using literature and in-house notebook
procedures. Under direct supervision by senior scientist, synthesized new compounds by
making appropriate modifications of known methods. Modified reaction conditions in order
to improve yields. Designed new or alternate reaction sequences to solve yield problems.
Purified synthesized chemicals to an appropriate degree. Submitted acceptable written
periodic reports. Prepared summaries of experimental findings reliably and independently.
Work Experience: Gained experience using various laboratory techniques involving organic
synthesis. Proficient with the full range of chromatographic, crystallization, and distillation
techniques. Analyzed and identified compounds using a good range of modern separation
and spectroscopic techniques. Including interpretation of TLC, HPLC, polarimetry, IR, and
NMR spectra of moderate complexity. Conducted literature searches for specific target
compounds, structures related to the target compound, or to determine specific conditions
for compounds and reactions. Organized work time so that several reactions are run
concurrently. Used time efficiently to produce target compounds and perform other tasks.
Cummins Inc. (Internship)
Cummins Inc. is a Fortune 500 company that specializes in designing, manufacturing, and
distributing diesel technology around the globe.
Dates: Summers of 2010 and 2011
Location: Fuel Systems Plant/Material Engineering Dept.
Position: Chemist Intern
