In the late 19th century, modern skiing began developing in multiple locations in Slovenia around the same time, including likely starting on Dol above Ajdovščina. Slovenians who served in the Austro-Hungarian military ski troops at the turn of the 20th century helped spread skiing after bringing home Lilienfeld skis and bindings as a reward. In 1910, mountaineers and ski enthusiasts in Ljubljana formed an unofficial skiing group called DREN to explore skiing in the nearby hills and Alps.
