In 2012, there were 514,000 new business owners in the United States. However, about half of all new businesses fail within the first five years, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. UnicornHuntr uses a random forest classifier trained on over 4,500 startups to predict the likelihood that new startups will receive Series A funding, with an accuracy of 81% based on cross-validation. Features used in the model include total pre-Series A funding, employee growth rate, number of news mentions, industry, and business model.
